With perhaps one of the greatest sighs to ever escape his lungs, Abysm puffed air from his nares which quickly turned to mist in the early morning chill. The waters that stretched before him were calm as ever; a glassy surface to unknown depths. For a moment he truly wondered what lay beneath the dark waters. Surely this lake that rippled all the way to the horizon and back contained some secrets? He imagined a great serpent living beneath the gentle waves. Each slow movement of its tail would stir the surface and cause the dainty waves that seemed to come from nowhere. Of course, the wind was the culprit, but Abysm did not allow that to take the magic out of it. He found that despite all the torment he had gone through, there was still something to be gained from admiring the scenery. Maybe it was something to do with the fact that some beautiful fields of grass could not beat you to near death. Maybe not. Abysm couldn't imagine a reason to distrust the peaceful expanse of water that stretched out before him. He could walk out into the depths and drown, but that would be on his own accord. By itself, the lake could do nothing to harm him. Perhaps, that was what was so alluring about it.
As the battle wary stallion dragged his hooves along the rocky shore, his gaze was drawn to the gently rippling surface. Beneath the initial deep azure, he could make out a variety of pebbles strewn across the sandy lake bed. Frantic flickering of near transparent fins alerted him of the many minnows swarming around his shadow. Perhaps most terrifying of all, Abysm could clearly make out the brutalized features that made up his face. He peered into the forlorn expression on his reflection's face, but couldn't understand how it was actually himself. The sooner he truly though about the fact it was just him, the sooner the expression turned stoic. That was normal. Typical. He gave no emotion and he showed nothing. It wasn't out of sheer willpower, he just often found that he no longer felt anything. It wasn't hard to act like you didn't care when you actually did not care. It was a concept he thought no one else could grasp, at least from his experiences. Was that the story his scars told? His gaze slid across the deep tear in his flesh that warped his eye socket and was scrawled from his ear down to his jaw. He was mutilated. Disgusting. What could someone like him actually deserve?
A curious feathery head peeked out from above Abysm's head in the reflection. His vulture companion had peered over him, wondering what the water had to offer. The bird's gaze threatened to warm his heart, so Abysm looked away. Well, he could deserve a bird. A stolen bird, taken from a dying stallion. Still, his feathery companion had no qualms and seemed rather content to remain perched upon his shoulders. Abysm watched quietly as the bird slowly lowered its head down, closer to the water's surface. He could feel the talons digging into his neck, but before the bird got past the point of no return with its balance, the little bastard took a quick bite out of the stallion's mane. It tugged hard, though upon realizing the hairs were not going to give, quickly retreated back to the safety of the pelt thrown across the stallion's withers. "Okay, I understand," he cooed to his companion, perhaps the only time one could ever hear him with such soft tones. "Too long in one place?" he questioned, immediately wondering if that was indeed the bird's issue. He hoped not.
That was an odd feeling in itself. Hoping that a land was the one he could stay in. It had been a very long time since the last time he felt some sort of attachment to a place. The canyon and its magnificent lake was growing on him. It had surprised him when he realized that he actually wanted to be roaming beneath the tall, steep walls of the canyon, rather than roaming the freelands. At first, Abysm hadn't been sure what to make of that. It was confusing and he spent his time wandering throughout the land. At some point, he walked along one shore of the massive lake, taking in all he could. A sort of peace had begun to settle over him. It was something the stallion could not name for certain. Eventually, the stallion realized he was beginning to feel at home. It almost felt good, each time he saw the flat surface of his lake which marked the entry of his home. The towering canyon walls made him feel almost safe for the first time in a very, very long time. Paths that lead up along the rock were dotted with bird nests of all sorts. Each time he saw the creatures take flight, his heart raced. At this point, it felt as if he were constantly walking among the realm of sleep. Only in his dreams would something like this occur, but even those were constantly plagued by nightmares. His waking world was much better than his slumbering world for once. It was an incredibly foreign thought.
Was this what it was like to actually have a home, somewhere to go back to? He could recall only the faintest memories of his original herd. Something told him that it didn't quite feel like this. Maybe even nothing like this. With all his motivations and life goals turned upside down and skewered, living in Shadow Canyon felt like a new life. Energy was beginning to course back through his once, nearly listless limbs. He wondered if he could ever become the leader he once nearly died to be. The longer his thoughts lingered on the dream of his childhood, the more clear it became. He would focus on the land. The land couldn't hurt him.
