Eerie night had fallen hours before the siblings had even set out, but it did not hinder them. The golden filly followed cautiously behind the imposing form of her half-brother. Her mother had said he was soft-hearted and kind, despite not looking it, but she was certainly not convinced. Vesuvius had been separated from this "brother" of hers for almost all of her life. It was only recently that the two had actually been introduced formally and she got the feeling that something was certainly off. The chestnut stallion rarely seemed happy and was so intense that it scared her a bit. But still, her mother had said to trust him. So, she ended up trailing after her big brother as he attempted to lead her through some sort of jungle path that he'd sworn was the best way to get back home. This struck her as odd. On her way with her mother and brother to visit Link (the hulking, scary brother), they had gone some much brighter and easier to travel route. Yet now that her mother and Alastor had gone home early with promises of Link to bring her back, they went this strange, scary way. Ves didn't like it one bit. What made matters worse was Link seemed to be almost pacing in place despite the fact that he was actually walking forward. He occasionally threw his head up and Ves swore the whites of his eyes had shown far too many times to be normal. Still, she had no idea where she was and she was intending on following him until home was in sight. Then she might leave. It was when she began to notice the sweat frothing off her brother that she thought it might be too late, and it was. Within an instant, the chestnut stallion bolted.
Ves flinched and stumbled due to her shock, but it only lasted a moment. "Hey! Stop!" she squealed and forced herself forward. However, her still-spindly, young legs could not carry her nearly as fast as her fully grown brother could run. She flung herself forward through the trees and bounced over the roots at breakneck speed, but it was not enough. She couldn't even see her brother past the initial burst of speed and now, only seconds later, she was certain she was entirely alone. The filly slowed her pace, gulping for breath as she tried to straighten herself out. It was then that the silence fell upon her sensitive ears. She was alone. Fear began to burn at her stomach and urge her muscles into a flight response, but the filly was unsure what to even do with that. Her eyes were stretched wide open, taking in any information that could be useful to her. The sky had such thick overcast that her usually faithful moon barely even cast light into the jungle. The dense leaves did nothing to help and she felt so small among the shadows. She began to lower herself, shrinking back as if it could make her disappear. Her mother had told her so many stories about natural predators that would eat little fillies like herself (and her brother). There were great bears and wolfs, beasts that could completely tear her apart. They stalked the mountain and she was absolutely positive that they could stalk these woods as well. It would only make sense that the jungle be completely littered with them. It could be only a matter of seconds before some puma came and shredded her limb from limb! Ves shuddered, tears building up in her pretty, sapphire orbs.
Everything seemed so much bigger now, but Ves tried her hardest to think of it as just the same as if Link was still with her. The trees were still wood. Ferns as tall as her were still just that, leafy plants. As the seconds ticked on, the jungle noises began to return slowly. The ringing in the filly's ears ebbed away as the soft cries of night birds soothed her. Insects began to crawl back out and do whatever it was that made their calls. The life slowly crept back into the jungle and at the same time, it crept back into her.
The not-even-yearling filly began to move again. She sucked in a very deep breath and forced her legs to work for her. Her hooves slowly pattered the ground, occasionally sucking into the mud underneath. With the ever-shifting clouds, it was difficult to make out any sort of detail in the forest. However, Ves felt a strong pull of determination and strained her eyes until they could pic out the leaves and twigs again. Her brother was big, he'd definitely leave a trail. It was something her mother had commented off-handed about deer one day, but she remembered it clearly. Everything seemed so dark though and the tears made things blurry. It took a few moments, but finally her gaze landed upon a thin branch that'd been clearly snapped off in what she assumed was his bolt away. She perked up and hurtled herself down the path that was beginning to take shape before her eyes. Her petite hooves seemed so loud among the night noises of the forest. At least they were better company than her heart pounding so loudly in her eardrums. Nervousness still clung to her fleeing legs and dread weighed heavily in her belly, but she ran on.
Snapped twigs and scattered hoof-prints in mud were the silver lining to Ves's made run through the jungle. They brilliantly lit the path that she twisted her body over roots and under trees to follow. Some jumps were difficult and she scrambled to get herself over the trees, but she managed to keep on route. Far ahead, she could see some sort of gap in the treeline and she could only hope that it was the end to all these trees. It made her rush, not pay attention perfectly to her panicked running. It only took one misstep to send the filly into a jump too low to clear a downed tree. A branch sticking up caught her foreleg and twisted her body to the side, causing the filly to tumble down the rest of the tree's girth and into the mud below. She cried out, tears finally spilling down her cheeks and falling pathetically into the mud. Pain seared the flesh of her knee, but also burned deep inside of it and up into her shoulder. The filly whimpered, unable to coax herself back up for the moment. She tried to take deep breaths and force her lungs to expand. The process was painful and took longer than she wanted, but finally it worked. Breathing helped take her mind off the awful pain growing in her right foreleg. After what felt like hours (but maybe a few minutes at best), Ves finally struggled to pull her good legs underneath her. With a grunt, she forced herself to her hooves, stumbling as her attempted to get her foreleg back under her as well. She nearly toppled right over again, but a tree caught her and steadied her unbalanced stance.
A sniffling mess, the girl just stood there and cried as she lowered her head to look over her damaged leg. Blood was trickling down it and already mixing with the wet mud that was now particularly filly-shaped. Bears or wolves could arrive any minute to chomp down on her tasty hide. She knew it wasn't safe. It was so hard to move though, the pain was almost suffocating. Stupid Link! She thumped her head against the tree, just giving in for a moment to try and gather the strength needed to move on. A shrill cry made her jump and sent a shiver down her spine. The girl whipped her head up to look, noticing the fluttering of wings in the treetops. She narrowed her eyes, following the outline of some bird as it dove under the branches and worked its way towards the clearing she'd noticed earlier. Her eyes widened in realization. The bird must be heading somewhere open, somewhere not this stupid jungle! The wings looked familiar against the slightly lighter sky patched in between tree tops. It appeared to be one of the hawks from the mountain. Ves jolted forward and hissed sharply in pain as she set the hoof of her bad leg down. The movement shook her to the core, but she knew she had to do it. With another pained hiss, she forced herself forward. One step after another, she grunted and cried as she slowly limped her way towards the clearing. The trip was agonizing and barely even seemed worth it in her mind, but the dang bird kept reappearing among the branches and driving her on. At one point, it even seemed to have caught some sort of mouse and eagerly chomped down on it. The sight almost made Ves sick, but it inspired her to not be that mouse for some wolf. Despite the pain, she lowered her head and dug down to finally force herself out to the clearing. As soon as she emerged from the trees, she stumbled and nearly collapsed, huffing and puffing. She managed to look up, tensing as she did. The coppery tones of her brother stood out in the dim light, but a dark red hue splashed his legs and maw, seeming to drip down. Ves felt fear crawl back into her stomach. She was too afraid to even make a noise, but she didn't need to.
Within a second of Ves realizing, Link snapped his head over to where she stood. The stallion looked wild and lost, but his gaze slowly narrowed and calmed as he took her in. He broke into a canter, which Ves was too frozen in fear to avoid as he returned to her side. "Ves! Fuck, I'm sorry!" he rubbed his head against her side and threw his neck around her, pulling her close. His voice sounded a bit different from normal, almost exhausted and maybe even actually worried. Ves really wasn't sure what to say; how to even address the blood stained across his coat. "I.. fell..." she managed to sputter out, looking down to her knee. As soon as Link noticed it, he tensed, but grimaced. "I'll take care of it, don't worry. I won't leave again.. You're safe, alright? I promise," the concern in her brother's voice managed to win her over and Ves finally leaned heavily against the stallion. He began fretting over her wound and despite the scare, her brother's concern made her feel a bit better. He was definitely like their mother. In the dim moonlight and terrifying emptiness of the land, it made her feel a little better.
