Autumn was supposed to bring in a warm breeze, slowly easing away the dry, painful heat of Summer. The leaves were supposed to calmly part from their branches, bringing in a gentle and soft season, a transition into the bitter Winter. Today, Winter seemed to have made a premature appearance. Sharp winds were biting at Laken's coat, the icy fingers not letting go of their clasp on her face and legs. The mare was used to the cold - in part from her short time in Aquilon Valley, yet mostly from her young life as a vagabond - but something else seemed to be in the air today. Something more than a bitter frost. Perhaps it was Laken's anger.
She was a child of rape. Abandoned at birth, cast off to live on her own and fend for herself. Whether she lived, whether she died - nobody cared. Laken had learned to harden her heart, ignoring her emotions and petty needs all for the sake of survival. "Home" was nothing but a vague concept to her; she had never experienced such a thing. From being recruited as a slave to spending an entire year in solitude, Laken was no stranger to betrayal and hardship. She had seen it all. But nothing had made her blood boil more than seeing the giant stallion march onto her land, attempting to proclaim it as his own. For once in her life, Laken had found herself a home. A safe place for herself and hopefully others, filled with bountiful food and abundant water. Claiming the Aquilon Valley had been the closest Laken had ever come to truly understanding what "home" meant. But now? The Iron Bull was trying to take that all away from her. However, Laken hadn't spent five years in depression and starvation for nothing. She was ready to fight back. To reclaim the one thing that she could call her own.
The painted mare had never seen the Battlefield. She had never even heard of it until The Iron Bull came to her land. The place was nothing much - bleak and empty, the sandy ground frozen solid. Combined with the murky sky and frigid air, the conditions were not the best for fighting, but Laken was confident she could make this work. She had dealt with so much in her lifetime - why not this? The roan stallion was not yet in sight, but Laken let out a call nonetheless. Her whinny was lost in the whistling wind, but her following words were loud and clear. "Iron Bull. You challenge me for my land. For the only thing I have," she proclaimed, her voice dripping with exasperation. "I don't think you realize what you've gotten yourself into."

"Iron Bull. You challenge me for my land. For the only thing I have. I don't think you realize what you've gotten yourself into." Bull snorted. "First, it is The Iron Bull, emphasis on the article. Second, this challenge, and resulting battle, is nothing personal. I saw a land that was not being used anywhere near its potential and I intend to do just that. I do promise that if I win this battle, you will be welcome to stay in the lands as part of my herd if you wish. I will not turn you out of the place you call home just because I take the leadership position. I would even be willing to consider discussing a possible ranked position for you." He stated, emphasizing the article on his name. It was a pet peeve when the one that used his name incorrectly was not close enough for him to consider it appropriate. Bull saw it as an insult and the lack of his full name was a challenge to overcome without becoming angry at the painted mare. His offer regarding what he would offer if he won were completely honest and he would stand by them. He tried to live honorably when he could and this was one area where he could offer something honest and honor bound.
Not wanting to delay the outcome of this meeting, he began to circle the smaller mare. As he moved, he kept his right eye trained on her. It was difficult to handle a battle with only one eye, but he had been doing it for a few years now. He was analyzing her, trying to decide on the best course of action for his first attack. The bay and white tovero was roughly two and a half hands shorter than him, lighter boned and more delicate looking. But that could also mean that she was faster than he was with his heavier build. His mind immediately categorized her as tiny and himself as larger with more muscles. That was not always the best thing, but it would all depend on how she battled. Sometimes a tiny horse tried to battle with brawn rather than brain and that could work fully in his favor. If she used her brains and thought out how to use her smaller size against him, then she could have a chance at beating him.
As Bull reached her left flank, he lunged toward her with large white teeth flashing. His gray ears were pinned back and his black mane and tail streamed out behind him as he moved. He was aiming for the tender spot just under her left front leg, against her barrel. If successful, that would cause pain with every step and possibly cause her to lose a good bit of blood. Regardless of where he hit, he wanted to do some damage if he did land a bite on her flesh. In order to attack, his head was snaked down to mid-level, stretching forward from his frame to try to attack from as far as he could before the battle committed to becoming a brawl. He enjoyed the challenge of a full brawling battle, feeling hooves connect with flesh and being able to retaliate immediately after the hit was felt on his own body.

Laken kept her dark eyes locked on the stallion as he spoke. She observed his every movement, his build, his mannerisms. He had the obvious advantage of size and strength, but if the mare carefully calculated her moves, she could destroy him. "First, it is The Iron Bull, emphasis on the article," he stated, beginning to circle around the painted mare. "Second, this challenge, and resulting battle, is nothing personal. I saw a land that was not being used anywhere near its potential and I intend to do just that. I do promise that if I win this battle, you will be welcome to stay in the lands as part of my herd if you wish. I will not turn you out of the place you call home just because I take the leadership position. I would even be willing to consider discussing a possible ranked position for you." The offer was far from enough to satiate Laken's anger, but it did settle her slightly. At least being beaten by this brute wouldn't lead to another spell of loneliness and lost wandering - if she took him up on his offer. It would hurt her pride to live in the land that she had failed to keep, but at least it would be a home. The mare shook her head, white and black mane floating in the sharp winds. Now wasn't the time to be overthinking her future - she had to think about this battle. "Well, The Iron Bull. We can discuss this at a later date. I will open the Aquilon Valley to all who promise loyalty to the land," she said, hoping to plant the thought of loyalty into The Iron Bull's mind. Laken did not plan on turning him away from her land, unless she feared that he would rebel and try to take back the Valley once again. Otherwise, he would be welcomed - all equines would be.
As the roan stallion circled her, he kept his right eye glued to his target. It quickly became obvious that something was wrong with The Iron Bull's vision. Perhaps he was totally blind in the other eye, perhaps it was missing, perhaps he was simply trying to hide old injuries or general weakness on his left side. Laken noted this odd mannerism, already planning her attack, when the stallion suddenly jumped. His towering frame lunged towards hers, head lowered as he tried to reach the shorter mare's foreleg. With his lips peeled back, exposing sharp teeth, Laken knew she wasn't going to be escaping this attack. His jaw clamped around her left armpit, teeth sinking into the most tender area of her barrel. The mare grunted in pain, thrusting her left foreleg forwards the instant it was out of the stallion's grasp. It didn't take long for the blood to flow with the injury being so close to a major artery. Laken let out a heaving breath as she stumbled back over to the stallion, adrenaline lessening the pain that she knew would be throbbing soon.
She had to quickly find a solution, an alternative to her initial plan of attack. This leg wouldn't be able to extend for sharp kicks anymore, not with the torn skin and muscle surrounding the joint. Laken knew rearing up or reaching for his upper back would be a waste of time; she was far too short to make any significant damage to those areas. However, with the stallion's head lowered from reaching for her barrel, Laken knew just what to do. Quickly jumping towards The Iron Bull, she threw her head upwards, cranking her jaw open as she aimed for his throatlatch. A deep bite here would be detrimental to the stallion, causing lasting injury, but if he moved at all, her bite could land elsewhere. Any movement of his head or neck would bring Laken's jaw to his lower neck and windpipe, or maybe even his chest. In the worst case scenario, the stallion could dodge her attack altogether. Their height difference was not going to make things easy, but Laken was confident. This battle was far from over.

"Well, The Iron Bull. We can discuss this at a later date. I will open the Aquilon Valley to all who promise loyalty to the land," Bull listened to her words, nodding to acknowledge that he had heard them. "We shall see what happens then, wont we. We have each offered the other to stay if the land is won." He answered shortly, unsure of how he was feeling at that point. He just wanted to get this battle over with and know if he had a home or if he had to continue on and try again. The idea of being part of a land was not what he wanted. He wanted a place where he could build his Chargers and make them great. He could not do that as a lowly herd member.
Bull was happy that his attack had been fully successful, however he didn't show his pleasure in it. He was a fighter at the core, so the successes of his attacks always made him more invested. The fact that his teeth had landed in such a tender spot was a good omen for how this battle would go, at least in his mind. Before he could attack again, the paint mare retaliated. Her strong ivory teeth lashed out toward his throat and he turned his head sharply to the right. He flinched as he felt the teeth skid across his tender throat and sank deeply into the muscles in his neck. It was not as damaging as her apparent plan would be, but it still caused blood to flow and pain to blossom. That pain made him shudder as he danced a few steps sideways and worked to put her back on his right side. As he moved, he felt the crimson fluid flow down his neck and shoulder, cooling quickly and adding a chill to that area as he moved. He was not thrilled with the damage that she had caused and that made him more adamant about his focus in the battle.
He did not enjoy harming the mare, if she would have backed down from his challenge than she would have been more than welcome to stay under his lead. But now that he was in the fight and his blood was pumping, he was ready to do what ever it took to win. Adrenaline surged through his body and he reared. Lifting up on his rear legs, he lashed out with his ebony hooves, striking at her spine and shoulder in an attempt to do more debilitating damage to the bay and white mare. As he came back to the earth, he allowed gravity to strengthen his movements. His legs felt heavier and he let that weight target the barrel of the mare that had defied him.
Once his hooves met the soil again, he bounced back a few steps and waited for her to make her next move. He knew it would not take long and he was ready for anything that would come his way. He was not one to dance far away and make the battle seem drawn out and distant. Due to this, he stayed close and ready for the next attack to come his way.

The Iron Bull's calm manner and curt voice was off-putting to Laken in a situation like this. He nodded his head as he spoke, keeping his words simple and to-the-point. It made Laken feel like a fool, with all of her pent-up anger and obvious frustration towards the stallion. "We shall see what happens then, won't we. We have each offered the other to stay if the land is won," he stated. Laken scoffed at the comment. There was something about his words that made her rethink her actions, something that made her want to hand him the land and get this all over with. But her pride told her differently. "If things were so simple, I have a feeling we wouldn't be in these battlegrounds right now," she retorted, trying to take a bit of the bite out of her voice. It was kind of the stallion to offer her a home if he won - but Laken wanted more.
Her first attack had hit the intended target with near perfection. When her teeth clamped around the stallion's upper neck, missing his throatlatch by mere inches, a wave of satisfaction hit the mare. She left her mouth closed on the area for a brief moment before The Iron Bull threw himself to the right, stepping away from her. It didn't take long for the thrill of the attack to fade - the moment the sickening taste of blood filled her mouth, her heart dropped. Laken was skilled at guarding her emotions, at distancing herself from the rest of the world, but this was different. She had done this to the stallion. The deep gash on his neck and the fresh blood pouring down his shoulder were her doing. It had been her teeth slashing at his jaw, digging deep into the muscle and refusing to let go. Laken had fought many times before, but it had always been out of necessity. Battles to escape herds that had held her prisoner, or small tussles over the last patch of grass in the Wintertime. She had caused quite a bit of damage in her six years of life, but none of it had felt as petty as this. She was defending her land... but she had only just acquired it. How much did the Aquilon Valley really mean to her? Laken grinded her teeth, clenching her jaw and swishing the last of the blood around her mouth. This fight was the only way for her to keep her home. She may not have owned it for long, but it was still the first time she had ever been able to call something her own. And that was so, so important Laken. Feelings of sympathy and regret were the worst things to feel during a battle, especially when Laken's future was on the line, but Laken simply had to move on. Her pity-party was cut short when The Iron Bull weaseled his way over to her left side and reared up, hooves swinging. His motive was obvious, and Laken, still shaken from the effects her own attack, darted forwards. Her hind hooves dug into the dirt as she shot out of the stallion's reach, knowing that a blow from his gargantuan body could be incredibly harmful. She could handle bites and kicks from him - but his entire body's weight on her petite frame would be too much to bear. The mare slid her way over to the stallion's left, his recent move confirming her belief that he could only see from his right eye. He had purposefully attacked Laken's left side now, going out of his way to see her from the right eye. This was something the mare could use to her advantage, but only if she fought with caution and care.
The recent close call wiped any remaining sympathy and questioning from Laken's mind. She was back into fighting mode, at least for the moment. Now on The Iron Bull's left, Laken was perfectly positioned for another attack. The stallion would barely even be able to see her if she positioned herself properly. The painted mare leapt towards the stallion's roan flank, swinging her hindquarters out of his reach. Kicking out slightly with her front legs, she swung her neck towards his stifle, baring her teeth with the aim of clamping around the joint. The lower flank area had somewhat lessened visibility for any equine, and with The Iron Bull's impaired vision, this attack would hopefully catch him off guard. A few years ago, Laken had suffered many severe bites to her stifle and flank area in a tough fight against a group of rogue mares. She could still imagine the pain that shot through her entire body, and the blood that drenched her barrel. Laken's injuries had prevented her from walking for days, and soreness persisted for months. No, she wasn't exactly making The Iron Bull's life easy, but did she really have another choice?

"If things were so simple, I have a feeling we wouldn't be in these battlegrounds right now," Bull snorted. "The fact that we are here is your own choice." He regretted that she had not been open to a better option than this fight. The retort from her told him that they might have a hard time coming to any agreement after this battle was finished. As he thought about what had transpired, he realized that his words may have been crueler than they needed to be. This mare did not deserve to be beaten down in more than just a physical battle. "I am sorry. I do wish that we would have been able to come to a better agreement. With both of us wanting the land for our own reasons, it is hard to come to a middle ground." He said, bowing his head slightly. The Iron Bull was truly sorry that they could not have come to a better agreement, but what was done was done. Now it was time to do what they needed to do in order to figure out the future of the Valley.
Bull realized his mistake when the painted mare disappeared from his view. His ears swiveled to catch her sounds and he began to move to get her back in his sights. As he spun toward his right, the grullo roan stallion felt her hard teeth sink into his hip. It was another attack that was going to cause serious pain once the adrenaline wore off. As it was, he felt his leg spasm and he had to fight to stay on his feet. Shoving the pain out of his mind, he continued to spin until he could once again see the smaller bay and white mare. His remaining sighted chocolate eye was narrowed in fury.
His next attack was colored by the fury that was overwhelming his body. That fury dulled the pain that was radiating through his left side and he dove back at her. Bull lifted as he moved, wanting to attempt to use gravity once again to do damage. His folded knees dove toward her spine while his blood tinted maw lashed toward the crest of her neck. If all went correctly, The Iron Bull could do damage to her spine, open the top of her neck, or even knock her to the ground under his weight. Of course, last time he had tried to target her spine, he had failed and she had managed to escape any damage at all. While he moved, his gray ears were pinned back tightly against his head. The pain of his injuries was a dull throb while in the adrenaline of the battle, but after everything was over... That was when he was going to be hurting. Part of him was wondering if it was worth it, but he wanted to have a home and this was the way to do it. If he lost, it would mean starting again on his attempts.

Laken had decided that The Iron Bull was too polite for her. She wasn't one to typically associate with those maniacal, villainous horses, but she wasn't into the overly kind and compassionate type either. There was just something about them that irked her; they came off as trying too hard. In a normal setting, with a quick chat and casual small talk, it wouldn't have bothered her too much. But in a battle, where the stallion had literally requested to fight against her, his courtesy was off-putkting. "The fact that we are here is your own choice," The Iron Bull began, snorting. Laken laughed to herself. "Sure, keep telling yourself that," she scoffed, raising her eyebrows. The stallion continued with a nod. "I am sorry. I do wish that we would have been able to come to a better agreement. With both of us wanting the land for our own reasons, it is hard to come to a middle ground," he told her. Laken sighed and raised her head, turning away from the stallion. She wasn't going to bother dealing with that mess at the moment.
This time, when the fresh blood filled the mare's mouth, she didn't flinch. The attack landed perfectly, and Laken's mouth secured right where she had intended it to. Her teeth sunk deep into the stifle muscle, and the stallion's leg seized immediately. She drew back to face The Iron Bull, knowing that the damage had been done. Whatever respect he had been showing earlier was gone. Fury filled his eyes as he moved towards Laken, rearing up yet again. He was too close this time, too quick - and Laken wasn't going to be running away again. She wasn't afraid anymore. Tensing every muscle in her back and biting her lip, Laken stood stiffly in anticipation of the impact that she knew was about to come. It didn't take long for the stallion's knees to crash onto Laken's spine, her entire body caving in under his immense weight. His gnashing maw fell onto Laken's crest, his teeth digging deep into the muscle. Unable to support his weight any longer, the mare fell to her knees - but she was determined to remain standing. She wasn't willing to give The Iron Bull the satisfaction of having his opponent laying at his feet. With a grunt, the mare lifted herself from the frozen ground, her dark eyes locking onto the stallion's. "I never wanted it to get to this point," she whispered, the only words she was able to get out. It wasn't a lie - Laken had simply wanted to defend her land, the only thing that she could call her own. She hadn't wanted to leave bruised and beaten, and to do the same to her challenger. But there was no turning back now. With waves of pain and stiffness restricting the mare's movement, she knew her attack couldn't be anything too impressive; she couldn't afford to worsen her own injuries. Not trying to move too far from where she was, Laken pivoted on her forehand, taking quick steps backwards with heaving breaths. With her eyes squeezed shut as she braced herself for the suffering she was about to inflict on herself, Laken kicked out with her hind legs, sharp hooves slashing in the direction of the stallion's left haunch and barrel. If the kick made contact as planned, her hooves could slice through the already injured area, or at least leave a bruise, but Laken was too worn out to care at this point. The Iron Bull's final attack had pushed her to the edge, and the mare was more than ready for this battle to end. She had given it her all - and that was all she needed to keep her sane during her eventual trek from the battleground. Even if that trek did not return her to Aquilon Valley.

They had both spoken their parts and what they were thinking, made offers for the other to stay in the Valley. Flicking his ears back, he acknowledged that he had heard her words and turned his head to the left. His attack was more thorough than he had anticipated, having learned from past experience to try for multiple angles on each attack. Rather than only one blow hitting, somehow he managed to drive her to her knees as well as connect with her neck. A moment of pleasure blossomed in his chest and he jumped back to allow her up. She had not reached the ground fully, but the fact that she had been driven to her knees did make him smirk a bit. The joys of being bigger and able to get a different angle on his attack. "I never wanted it to get to this point," Her words were a whisper on the breeze as he struggled to make out the comment. A pang hit his heart as he used his ears to keep tabs on her movements. "I wish we would have been able to come to a better agreement." When she paused on his left, he spun to the right. His movement was perfect in timing, causing her hooves to fly just inches from his side. He felt the wind of the attack as he leapt forward and away from her painted form. Once away from the mare, he turned once again to face her. Bull was careful to place himself where he could see her, noticing that his leg was starting to swell and throb with each movement. The terms of their battle were done now and he bowed his head in respect to the bay and white mare. "You should be proud of the battle. You fought hard. My offer still stands for you to stay in the land if I manage to come away the victor. I would even be willing to consider placing you in a position of power." He spoke honestly, raising back to his full height and taking a deep breath. @chaosy good fight, I had a ton of fun writing through this with you! If you want to post The Iron Bull in Aquilon Valley to join or get a subland, go for it - but if you'd rather get him his own mainland, I'd like to thread him and Laken again sometime! They have a cool dynamic.
