Spring has begun to emerge over the lands that he had grown accustomed to. It certainly was not Siwa that was sure, but he was happy enough. The atmosphere was calm, the cloud cover non existent as the heavens shone brightly upon the lands they felt jubilous enough to bless with picture-perfect weather. Bayek shook his bleached crown casually as his amaranthine globules surveyed the vicinity. His towers cocked to the side as he twisted his dial to look around towards a small frame stirring not too far off.
Khemu lifted his scant crown. The youngsters eyes parted to reveal orbs that resembled his own violet windows. The colt stood up and stretched, Bayek rubbing his crown against his sons. Good morning sleepy head. Khemu looked up to his father as he was greeted. A small grunt and a grumpy snip came Bayeks way. The platinum hellion shoulder bumped his son as the duo went forth. The two always strolled for morning water when Khemu finally woke up, every day. Khemu quickly learned the route they took to get to the water hole and today the colt led the way, pouncing and trotting and having a good time with the spring air.
As the two approached the water side, other creatures were hopping and bouncing and frolicking in the spring time. Bayek took note of each one he saw careful to maintain a tight eye on Khemu. The colt was drinking and Bayek dipped his own crown to the watery surface to fulfill his thirst. Can I go play dad, please? Khemu's voice was ringing next to his ear and Bayek snorted gently. Yes but remain in sight please. Over protective? Perhaps. But he wanted to be sure he did not let anything happen to Khemu. Bayek settled himself in a patch of newly sprung foliage to graze whilst his colt took off in excitement.
----
Khemu zipped away from his father. Getting to play excited him, he rarely got to just roam. My dad is so protective... His small voice was to himself mostly but saying it aloud helped relieve some frustration from it. He bucked and reared and then tripped and crumpled to the grass. He lay there for a moment gathering his breath. He then rolled and as he did he bumped into a fawn, who looked at him with wild eyes. Khemu froze his motions and stared right back. Whoa! What're you!? You're spotted! He let his voids travel along the backside of the fawn, admiring the markings it bore.
The fawn stood up and Khemu followed suit. The two sniffed each other curiously before deciding another youngster may be fun to play with. The two bounced and wrestled, Khemu holding back a lot of his force in fear of hurting the youngling. Khemu glanced at his sire, who smiled gently to him when he noticed he had made a friend. The fawn's mother, a beautiful doe, approached the area, saw the two playing and seemed to welcome the break as she lay down to rest. Khemu was playing tag now, being 'it' and chasing the agile fawn. It was besting him most of the time, but once it stumbled, Khemu pounced.
After a while, the youngsters collapsed in a tired pile, their breathing hard and their bodies lathered. The sun was higher up in the heavens at this time. They slowly caught their breaths and brought their heart rates back down. Khemu was excited, he made a friend today and perhaps his father would stop being so over protective after seeing how safe it was out here. But within the next few moments, the doe was darting up, signaled for her young fawn, and Bayek was racing towards the youngsters. Khemu quickly stood up. What's happening dad? Every animal was stirring, some fleeing, others panicking and everyone moving to leave the area.
Bayek, Khemu, the doe and her fawn, all fled in the same direction. The growl and call of a cougar split the senses of the young colt, who pushed himself faster. Come on Khemu, don't look back, just run. His fathers words were strong in his harks as the colt listened. Dad, my legs hurt though. The doe and fawn looked just as scared as Khemu felt, but both his sire and the fawns doe were determined to get them out of there. The squad raced over the terrain, the deer keeping pace with the equines, as if protection in numbers would help. Khemu was thankful the duo didn't leave, he felt somewhat safer with them around. His father urged him on Come on Khemu, come on son, you have this and the colt heard the doe signalling to its babe to keep going. The youngsters raced onward, into a canyon.
The adults urged them to keep going in whatever direction they had to get safe. Bayek shoved the youngsters into a cavernous hole. Stay there! Don't move, don't make a sound, and do NOT come out unless I am telling you to do so! And Bayek bolted back towards where they had come from, back to danger. Khemu huddled with the fawn, both scared, both exhausted. The two clamped their eyes shut and waited.
----
Bayek felt bad leaving his child alone with another child that wasn't his own species even. If he didn't lure the cougar away though, they'd be dead. Bayek didn't hear anything, but his nasal passages caught the strong pungent scent of blood. His heart dropped... What would happen if it was who he thought it was...? He slowly approached the entrance to the canyon and the cougar was circling its kill before grabbing her by the head and dragging her away, out of sight. He swallowed past the hard lump in his throat. What was he going to tell Khemu? What was the babe going to do without its mother? The golden stallion stood quietly to just breathe. At least it wasn't Khemu. His inner thoughts disgusted him, but it was right... At least he still had his son. But what kind of monster thinks that way? Obviously this one. Oh how disgusting those thoughts were.
The brute made his way back to the youngsters who were tucked away, safe. Little ones, it is me, we are safe to leave now. Both little ones got up and slowly walked out of the hole in the wall. Dad, where is her mother? His little ones voice questioned. Bayek felt his mouth go dry. Oh, how horrible it was for the fawn. Unfortunately, she had to make the ultimate sacrifice to protect you both... She no longer walks with us, but with the Gods above... She has met Anubis and now walks with Ra. Bayek eyed the fawn who seemed to understand. The silence between them made it hurt worse, the three figures hanging their dials as they waited for anything to break the reticence. What will happen to her? Again his tyke inquired. Bayek allowed his violet voids dance across the fawn then to Khemu. If she so chooses, she may remain with us, as your adopted sibling. She will be safe. He offered the opportunity and the fawn looked to think about it. With a small curt nod, the trio came to an agreement. Khemu, you are to be her main guardian then, understood son? Khemu stood up straight and nodded eagerly.
With both tykes tucked up around his gullet, the stallion ushered them back towards the lands of freedom, the lands where he knew the youngsters would be safe, even if he could not quite fit in with them... He knew if he couldn't, neither could any predators. Looking back once more, the paternal figure knew he soon would not forget this experience... He knew neither would his Khemu nor the young fawn who was now orphaned. He would keep an eye out for a herd of deer, and if she ever decided to leave, he would not hold her down. How hard would it be to have them accept a juvenile? If they did not, he would always welcome her with him and Khemu. That felt like the proper thing to do in this case. He was after all, the one who failed to save her mother.
