The last several weeks had been spent in preparation for this little outing and yet, Alastor could not shake the anxiousness that plagued him. He had checked, then double-checked, then triple-checked the little stashes of herbs he had throughout Omashu. They were all well kept and would remain safe while he was away. He wondered if Casi would find them and question why there were stashes hidden in very obscure locations. Alastor very much hoped he wouldn’t, since it was one of the few calming things he did now that he’d left his childhood home. It was also an old habit from spending his whole life collecting herbs for his mother. Needless to say, it was difficult to shake off.
However prepared he was, Alastor still worried about the journey ahead as well. Perhaps to a more “well-traveled” equine, this little trip would be no task at all. It’d be just a simple walk; a day trip. Now - to Alastor - this was a new adventure and one of the first times he’d be traveling so far all by himself. He desperately hoped he wouldn’t run into any trouble or equines who happened to actually be trouble.
As soon as the sun had slipped over the horizon in Omashu, Alastor headed out. He wove carefully through the woodland and down over the foothills. Luckily, his destination was honestly not too far and the sun had barely reached mid-sky before he began to notice signs of his arrival. The air became overwhelmed with this briny humidity and a thick haze gathered over the horizon. The sun very quickly was blotted out and Alastor began to notice just how mushy the ground had become. Within moments of realizing that, y’know, the weather might actually be different away from home, the skies opened up and rain poured down on the young stallion.
The change of going from perfectly comfortable to suddenly a drowned rat halted Alastor in his tracks. He felt the urge to flee back home, to somewhere warm and dry. However, he was just so close to his destination that he felt he couldn’t abandon it now! So on through the onslaught of rain he went. The downpour nearly blinding him as he stumbled through the mud and managed to get himself coated in it. The dirt path very quickly turned to thick pockets of mud and from that into dangerous marshland. Again, as the mud sucked his hooves down and threatened to hold each step he took, Alastor debated turning tail and going home.
But he was so, so close.
Onward he went, ducking his head down and squinting hard through the rain. Eventually, the quiet thunder in the distance turned into a loud roaring. Alastor slowed his already slow pace and peered ahead towards where it seemed the horizon dropped off. The marsh leading up to it seemed to have been swallowed whole by murky waters that pulled towards the jagged horizon. The stallion hesitated, then grit his teeth and slowly worked through the muck. Somewhere, knee-deep in the mud, Alastor’s hooves began to find purchase on rocks. The thick, gray haze began to separate into three different hues. The murky brown waters beneath him, a deep gray that soared above him as the sky and a dark, threatening gray of great, rolling waves slamming into the cliffside beneath him. From his vantage point, Alastor could see the flatness of the shoreline he’d been promised sprawling out before him.. But as an extension of the raging ocean below. It was supposed to be a relaxing day to gather the strange herbs that grew so close to the ocean. He’d never been to this particular spot, but he had heard of its beauty. Now, it just seemed so angry and unleashed.
Though as the young stallion peered out over his muddy cliffside, he almost felt as though this raw rage was more beautiful than something calm and controlled. It was strong and cut through everything in its path. It was to be admired for its strength and tenacity. It was a sight to behold, but Alastor turned his head away. He could never live up to her.
