When the first one had popped up, Link hadn’t really thought much of it. There had been so much rain lately and he had spent most of his time hiding away from it. Honestly, he’d hardly noticed at first. It was only when he walked out of his den one morning to see several hundred blobs of color dotting the bowl of a meadow that he realized the invasion was even happening. Flowers.
He glared at the colorful little plants. Link seem to get the thought in his head that perhaps if he abused enough of the dainty petals and crushed enough stems that the invasion could be stopped.
But it could not.
The next morning after his flower crushing brigade, the chestnut stallion woke himself up in a sneezing fit. His face felt swollen and his eyes burned and itched. With a grunt of annoyance, he rubbed his face against his foreleg - which still coated in floral remains - merely caused another sneezing fit. That was it. Link could take no more of this.
He charged out of the den, blinded in rage as he trampled and tore up just about every daisy, dandelion, and jewelweed he could get to. The delicate petals stood no chance. After he had worn himself out, Link stood there, panting. He raised his shapely head and prepared to take in the well-fought carnage, only to discover he’d cleared just a small circle near the den and one flower still remained in the center. The stallion grimaced and grumbled, then sneezed for good measure.
The floral invaders had won for today and he quickly retreated to his den to avoid any further sneezing fits.
However, the knowledge that one flower still stood haunted Link. It had been uncovered in his rampage and now it stood there, mocking him. The thing hadn’t even been colorful or in bloom! It was a shriveled, dark mess of petals. The fact it survived disturbed him and finally lured him from sleep.
Overhead, the moon shone brightly over the earlier battlefield. As he stepped out of the cave, Link paused just to take a deep, pollen-free breath. The night air had always refreshed him and he felt slightly less irritable as he approached the doomed flower. However, as he laid his eyes on it, the plant was very much not-doomed.
A multitude of five-petaled, rich purple flowers had bloomed on the dark green stem. They carefully hid a pale yellow center with antenna-like stalks shooting out from the petals’ depths. The sight caused Link to halt and furrow his brows. He’d never seen a flower that bloomed at night. Honestly, he had never even seen this sort of flower before at all. The dark stalk looked familiar and come day-time he had always assumed they were dead. To know that they burst into bloom once the sun went down was shocking.
For a moment, the chestnut stallion stared at the little flowers. The dark color was quite different from the obnoxious rainbow of the daytime. Those flowers were now sleeping, but still looked soft and too delicate wrapped up in their petals. They had nothing on this dark flower, which appeared dead as it slept. Link kind of admired that. Though, he couldn’t help but begin to draw comparisons to his lover. How she could appear weaker, maybe less capable just due to her condition and want for isolation. He knew that wasn’t true. He knew that she had suffered and was slowly working on overcoming it. Over the last few months, Delilah had been making progress and Link was relieved, even if she still tended to fall asleep at not the best times. She was blooming, just not when everyone else expected her to.
With a sigh, the stallion’s gaze softened as he looked over the dark purple flower. Carefully, he reached down and snapped off a stem of it. Flowers weren’t really Delilah’s thing, but he thought maybe she might appreciate this one. With great caution not to sneeze, Link carried the flower back to their den.
