This entire world was so new; so bright and shiny, with so little explored! Even after spending several days roaming around the “free lands” - which a kind stranger had informed her were lands untouched by the kingdoms - Evensong still felt as though she had covered almost no ground. She’d stumbled across a treacherous swamp and tall mountains that seemed to loom overhead with their jagged peaks. For a short time, she had tasted the salt of the ocean in the air. Then a stranger gave her the advice to head a little bit South and a little bit West until she came across a ravine. From there - they insisted - would be an amazing walk to take. Of course, Evensong had graciously thanked the stranger for their inside knowledge of these lovely places and had set off.
The path the stranger had described was just about right. It was maybe noon by the time Evensong descended into the ravine and her hooves tapped against the frozen river. The ice felt strong and thick beneath her, though thin cracks and gouges ran along its surface. She only assumed it was from the entire winter and took care not to scuff the ice further. The ravine’s shadow offered cool shade for some time, though the sun did eventually begin to peek out as the rocky walls took a sharp turn.
From there, flowers began to bloom along the steep banks and the sunlight made the ice gleam and glisten. The chestnut mare walked with a bounce in her step and her head held high. This truly was the beautiful walk she had been promised. She hoped that the stranger had more places to tell her about later and that she might run into them again. They had seemed a little strange, wearing pelts of three animals and stones around their neck. Evensong didn’t think too much of it, but she did figure she would be able to point them out in a crowd again.
As she wandered farther, the solid clack, clack, clack of her hooves turned into more of a clish, clish as water began to pool on the ice and some slush formed. She glanced down to her hooves with a frown, as the footing was beginning to get a little more slippery. “Hmmm,” she hummed and tried to peer further downriver. It seemed that the ravine remained steep on either side, so there wasn’t a side path to take. She would just have to be careful, it seemed. So, she continued on.
It wasn’t until she reached a bit of a widening in the ravine that her gut begin to twist. Something just didn’t quite feel right on the ice. It seemed to shift beneath her weight and there was quite a bit more slush around the center of the river. She began to stray towards one of the sides, careful to avoid the more slippery areas. She’d just begun to calm and admire some of the creeping vines when a loud CRACK broke through the air. The petite mare nearly spun around, her hooves sliding out from beneath her in the process. She landed hard on her side and saw very closely the large crack that shot out through the ice beneath her. “Gah!” she scrambled to her hooves and had to lunge forward to get herself moving again, despite the new pain in her shoulder. The ice began to bow and shudder beneath her hooves. The large crack she had left seemed to be spreading and branching out like lightning just beneath the surface. For a moment, she was too afraid to move.
Then the ice lurched, sending Evensong with it.
The section of ice where she’d cracked it finally seemed to break off. The current grabbed the bottom of the chunk and sent the thick sheet of ice crashing up against the remaining solid river. The cracks begin to spread quickly as the frigid river gushed up and attempted to reclaim its ice. Evensong stumbled away from the cracks and the dangerous rising water. She tossed her head in panic and glanced over the riversides quickly to try and find a way out. A sliver of sand caught her eye and she lunged towards it, only to slam her hooves down and slide to a halt as more ice broke free and the river burst up to reclaim the land.
With a snort, the chestnut spun on her heels and eyed the steep cliffside just across from where the ice was beginning to churn with white, frothing waters. There were several ledges that jutted out, though none of them seemed too large. She did spot enough room to where just maybe she could climb up.
Given the very little time to think, Evensong went for it. She dug her hooves into the failing ice and burst forward to dash across the ice. More cracks and more ice began to slip away, sinking quickly beneath her hooves. She stumbled and forced herself to pick her hooves up quicker to race to the ledge. As it drew near, the mare leapt from the ice and onto the rocky ledge, the ice finally caving in behind her and succumbing to the rapids.
Now on dry land, Evensong didn’t stop. She leapt up onto the first ledge, then twisted sharply around again to bound up to a second, more sturdy looking boulder. That was when she began to huff and pant. For a brief moment, she looked back down over the river. There was a growing hole in the ice from where she’d leapt and the river was quickly using it to consume the rest of the river’s width. The opposing spit of land had been swallowed whole by the raging waters and Evensong silently thanked the stars she had managed to get to the ledges instead.
For only a few more moments did she watch the destruction as the river tore apart the sheet of ice and threatened to break the ice even further downstream. The overflow of water began to lap at the sides of the cliff and engulfed some of the lovely flowers. Evensong took that as her hint to keep moving. She leapt from boulder to ledge to tiny outcroppings on the cliffside. Each rock felt as though it might give, might send her tumbling down to the icy depths below - but they held. The chestnut mare managed to maneuver her way up the ravine and finally claw her way onto the grassy field it cut through. She was left panting, sweaty, with a sore side and a hurt shoulder, but her heart was pounding in the good way. With a snort, she tossed her head and glanced back down the ravine to the thawing river below. It hadn’t been the calm walk she’d been promised, but it certainly was beautiful.
