ALIENS
Rain fell from the sky at an awful and frightening rate, flooding the lands quickly. Lamia was sick and tired of the mud and the rain. The sky had opened up about an hour ago and already the earth was waterlogged. Her hooves sank into the terrain with each step she took. Mud had caked onto her legs, chest, and belly - filth that not even the rain could wash away since there was just
so much of it. The young filly was tempted to ask if they could go somewhere without so much mud and rain but at this point, she wasn't even sure if such a place existed. She was following after her father and older brother, just barely able to make out the sounds of them bickering. It was hard to hear anything over the constant rain. Lamia did not bother trying to join the conversation - they would never be able to hear her, anyway. Ever since she was born and learned how to talk, the girl had never been able to speak above a whisper. It made communicating in loud or distracting environments practically impossible. Because of this, she'd grown more and more reclusive and somber the older she got. The other children often made fun of her because she was so quiet. And she couldn't play as much as the other kids, either. She got too out of breath. Sometimes, though she would never admit it to her father or brother, she worried she was going to die. Just like her mom. When she got out of breath, that was always her worst fear. Leaving behind her brother and dad with just another heartbreak. So she just didn't run around as much as she used to, deciding to play it safe instead.
She'd gotten distracted by her thoughts for a moment, lifting her head to look ahead of her and becoming startled when she realized she could hardly make out the figures of her family. Dark brown, nearly black eyes widened and she snorted, scampering forward up the hill that her family was already nearly at the top of. Her hooves suctioned into the mud, making her hurried pace unsteady and difficult. She was already feeling her breathing becoming harder. Wrinkling her nose, Lamia forced herself to stay calm. She would slow down once she got to the top of the hill. She just didn't want to lose sight of Kasdeya and Black Tide. She just wanted to -
Not get caught in a mudslide but that was exactly what ended up happening. Before she even fully realized what was going on, Lamia was already tumbling head over heels down the hill. She wanted to scream and though sound left her muzzle, it was not nearly audible. Barely more than a huff of air. Panicking, she tried to scramble in the mud to get herself back on her feet. Mud clogged her nostrils. It got in her mouth. She tumbled faster and faster down the hill. She'd never imagined her death would be something quite like this. Resigning herself to her fate, Lamia clamped her mouth shut and closed her eyes. The girl tried to relax as much as she could, letting the mudslide take her wherever it was that fate would decide she end up.
Unsure of how long it lasted - it felt like forever, but it could have only been a minute or two - Lamia realized after a moment that she had stopped moving. Her eyes were still closed. She could feel mud coating every inch of her body. Her legs were stuck beneath a layer of mud, trapping her against a... A what? She could feel something smooth and cold to the touch against her body. She was wedged up against it. Weird... she hadn't felt herself hit anything. Had she passed out? Shuddering from the cold and from the anxiety she felt, Lamia gave as hard of a snort as she could to clear out her nostrils. Slowly, fearfully, she peeked open an eye. She did not know where she was. She didn't recognize anything around her. Slowly, her other eye opened and she craned her neck around awkwardly to try and get a better look at her surroundings.
She was on the outskirts of a forest. Had she really slid that far? Frowning, she began to observe the object she was wedged up against. After just a few mere seconds of observation... she knew she had no freaking clue what the hell it was. It was an odd, shiny....
thing. Bigger than any horse she had ever seen. It looked to be made of some sort of metal, though she'd never seen that much metal in one spot before. Was it something man-made? That seemed the only logical explanation, really. The thing, whatever it was, gave her the creeps. She flicked an ear, realizing two things then - 1 it had stopped raining and 2 she could hear a faint humming/buzzing sound coming from the object. A sound unlike anything she'd ever experienced. Intrigued, she turned her ear more toward the object to listen.
The sound was getting louder. The pitch was of it became almost painful. Lamia felt her heard racing in her chest.
Get out of here. I gotta get out of here. She wasn't sure what triggered the thought, but the panic that consumed her then assured it that the thought should not be ignored. Clenching her jaw, Lamia began trying to free her legs from the mud. She struggled and struggled, her breathing picking up, her eyes watering - tears leaving tracks through the mud on her face. The humming sound was almost deafening now.
Dad.. Kas... where are you guys? She didn't know why she was so scared, only that this was the most terrified she had ever been, ever. This was more scary than when mom died.
Mom I need you, please. She closed her eyes and... the humming stopped. All around her was sudden silence. And something else. Light. A bright light, brighter than the sun, piercing her eyes even through her eyelids.
Again, the filly screamed - only this time, an actual scream left her lips. Not a whisper, but a fully fledged, horrified, blood-curdling screaming. It startled her into opening her eyes. What she saw stunned her into silence because stood before the red dun child were a trio of creatures. At first she assumed them to be the humans she had only heard stories about, but they were... different than what she'd heard them described eyes. Hairless, eyes blacker than her own, unblinking, skin a pale hue of grayish-white. They were looking at her, trapped in the mud, and though they were frightening... the sight of them also made an eerie calm settle over the equine. Lamia watched as one of the trio approached her. They reached for her with a hand, placing it upon her muzzle. Their skin was ice cold, sending a chill through the filly. But she was no longer afraid.
None of the creatures said anything, not even as they began helping to remove her from the mud. All three of them had the same icy skin, and though they pulled her from the mud with ease, they were gentle. Lamia felt no pain, not even discomfort as her legs were freed from the mud. They helped her get back up onto her feet. The first one that had approached her then touched its fingers against her throat. Only then did she feel a milisecond of pain. A sharp pain that nearly sent her to her knees, but it was over in an instant. Tears had welled up again in the corners of her eyes.
"Wha-" Her voice. She hadn't expected it to be so loud, so used to only hearing a whisper. She jerked back away from the creature, mouth agape.
"M-my voice!" The creature smiled at her. Still, it said nothing. The two other creatures smiled as well, staring with their unblinking eyes. Lamia, stunned, could only stare as the creatures then began to walked toward the metallic object. A door appeared seemingly out of nowhere, allowing them to walk into it, and then, much to her surprise, the object began to buzz and whir, hovering into the air. High and higher until it was above the trees. Until it was out of sight.
"Thank you!" she called out after the object, once she'd finlly found her voice again. Eyes still watering but with happiness and joy this time, Lamia bolted away from the forest outskirts, giggling and squealing with glee. She mud still made movement difficult, but she was too happy to care now. She charged through the mud, slipping and sliding without a care in the world. She didn't know what they thing was, or what those creatures were, but they had given her something she had never thought she would ever have - a voice. A real, true voice.
