Do U Believe in Magic
The light of early morning filtered in through a set of sheer curtains hanging listlessly from a cold metal rod above a large bay window. An gentle gust blew in, carrying the scent of the sea and the cries of gulls as they floated on the breeze. Gidge groaned an rolled over to peer with one eye that he had managed to pry halfway open. The too white room glared back at him as the sun began to flood in. Everything was a pristine ivory, from the walls right down to the attire he placed on his bed. It was broken up only by interjections of black and wood floor, and trim. Modern is what he remembered it being called.
Gidge sat up with a grumble and peered around the room through squinted eyes. Everything looked different. Hadn't he just been camping out with his boyfriend, Casimiro? He glanced down at his limbs and stared at his pale white skin. Gidge clenched and unclenched his hands when he heard a voice interrupt his confusion. Are you finally up? Lazy bones. The voice chanted to him, and startled him for a moment. He peered around the room and found no one, at least no one breathing. Beside him sat up in the bed was a gray Elephant plush that he instinctively reached out for. What are you doing? I can get up myself. I'm not a lazy bones.
Gidge stared at the plush a few moments before, just as she announced, she sprung upright onto her feet. He shrugged and rubbed the sleep from his eyes as he swung the covers back off his legs. The blanket emit a crisp rustle as it settled back on the pale sheets. His feet hit the floor where the sun had warmed it, and he paused a few moments. Gidge wanted to enjoy the feeling of the early morning light gently warming his skin. He wondered why he couldn’t remember where Casi was this early, or if he was still home. He couldn’t remember how they got here either, and when he tried to recall it, his memory was foggy.
Gidge yawned and stretched himself upwards as he pried himself from the comfort of his bed. He walked out of the bedroom of the quaint beach cottage and into the openness of the living areas. There was no other soul in sight, aside from Elianna of course. The plush marched on behind him, something he now believed was the usual. Casi was nowhere to be seen for now. Gidge decided to make himself some coffee. As he began to shuffle into the kitchen, the thought of coffee simple caused utensils to begin flying around the kitchen. He stopped, and stood frozen in disbelief as he stared at the utensils. All of them were exactly what he needed for coffee, a filter, the beans, a pot of water. Everything just came to settle in place. Elianna prodded his ankle, startling him from his daze. Aren’t you forgetting something? She asked in an almost exasperated fashion. “What? What am I forgetting?”
Gidge asked her with an edge of annoyance in his voice. Did you really think I was just some elephant plush that could talk? Ha ha very funny Gidge. Now change me back. She half demanded, and her own annoyance began to shine through. He stared at her like she had grown two heads. Come on oh great magician. I’m not going to beg you every time we have some sort of spat and you turn me into some stupid elephant plush. She argued again. “Hey, I love elephants.” He grumbled to her as he wondered how to turn her back into whatever, or whoever.
All he had to do before was think about what he wanted. That couldn’t possibly work could it? Gidge didn’t remember having any sort of magic, so this couldn’t possibly be real… could it? Gidge hesitated a moment before decidedly having the thought that he wanted to return Elianna into her usual state. In a flash, she began to transform from a small Elephant plush, into a woman. Elianna had sleek gray hair, and knowing green eyes. Her face was weathered, but she was not old. It was weathered by the elements, like someone who spent too much time in a garden.
Was that so hard? She chastised him and punched him lightly on the shoulder. Elianna moved to pour both of them some coffee. Gidge was dumbfounded. He didn’t know what was going on but, he was bound and determined to find out. “Where did Casi go, Elli?” He asked her somewhat cautiously. She gave a shrug as she took a sip of her coffee. Probably in the garden. She chimed in. Gidge peered at her skeptically from the top of his cup that produced an enticing aromatic steam. He took a sip of the coffee and was startled by the fact that it seemed more like a sludge than a liquid. “What is this?” He asked her.
Elli laughed as if he were telling a funny joke. Its brognap, Gidge. Are you okay? She asked him with another chuckle and shake of her head. Gidge didn’t know what ass-backwards world he found himself in but he wanted to go back to camping with Casi. He set the cup down on the kitchen table and headed out the door to the beach. There was a beach, and ocean that surrounded what seemed like a small island. All 360 degrees of their island.
Gidge spun around in a circle as he studied where they were. It was a white cottage raised off the beach by white pillars. There was far too much white. To the left was a hill that looked like it had been terraformed, and surrounded by a wooden fence. Inside was a lush green abundance of plants and two other people studying a strange flower. One he recognized as Casi, with black hair and sweet brown eyes. He had that white ink tattoo on his back that looked like lacing. Then there was Zana, who before they got here, was part of this group of herbologists of something.
Gidge approached the pair and Zana was the first to turn to him before Gidge nestled himself in the arm of Casi. Look who decided to join us today! Zana announced sarcastically. This was the norm. Why did he know this? It was like the first time they met. Gidge had secretly ‘kidnapped’ Casi for a date and Zana had come barging into his home, thinking there was a real threat. Casi had forgotten to mention his boyfriend to his partner.
Herbology club. He thought to himself as he pulled himself in closer to Casi. Hey Gidge. Did you get some brognap? He asked warmly. “I did, no thanks to either of you.” He shot back more at Zana than Casi. It was all in good fun. What, the mage can’t magic himself up some brognap? Zana laughed and Casi joined in. Gidge rolled his eyes slightly as he thought about Zana floating a few inches off the ground until she did. Casi chastised him immediately. Come on Gidge, you can’t just keep using your powers to prove a point.
He was always the mediator. “Well, I mean I can. I think you mean I shouldn’t.” He teased him slightly. Gidge gave him a peck on the cheek before he stretched again and started heading down the beach toward the water. He noticed something was off as he kept walking and the pair kept calling after him. “What? I’m just going for a swim. You can join me!” He called back to Casi and Zana. Gidge glanced up at the sky, but something was wrong.
The gulls were suspended in air like stars, chirping incessantly on a rhythmic interval. The sky was black, like night. Okay, so there’s seagull stars? He thought to himself as he kept walking closer to the ocean. It wasn’t until Casi pulled him away from the water that he stopped. “What is the matter with you two?” He said exasperated as Casi stared at him. Gidge… don’t you remember what happens if we try and go in the water? “No? What’s going on…?” Gidge asked him cautiously. The look of shock on Casi’s face told him that he was behaving strangely. Gidge… whoever goes in there will disappear. Xerxes… Akroma… Don’t you remember this?
Gidge felt a pang of pain surge through his chest. Those two were gone. He knew it, but he didn’t want to know it. He plopped himself down next to Casi until they were using each other to hold the other up. “Sorry, I guess I slept harder than I thought..” He murmured. Casi reached up to tousle his hair with a gentle smile. Don’t worry about it Gidge, today is the day we get out of here, remember? Your magic should be powered back up.
“My magic.. Right…” He agreed absently. We’re going home, Gidge. Casi spoke again, his excitement was clear in his words. He nodded and smiled again. “You’re right, lets all go home.” He said as he stood up and offered Casi his hand. The pair walked back to the too-white cottage on the beach beneath the seagull stars.
Come on Zana, Elli! It’s time to go! Casi bellowed and the group gathered together in front of the cottage. Gidge felt a strange compulsion, as though he knew what he had to do new. Words began to flow from his mouth, words he had never herd before. His hand began to move in a cyclical fashion, as if they had done this a thousand times before. Gidge watched in shock and horror as a portal began to open up. Camping. He thought to himself. This was how they got here, they wanted to go camping!
As the group stepped through the portal, Gidge jolted awake. The sensation of falling was too much for him to remain asleep. He groggily peered around the cavern and found the sleeping form of Casi beside him. He peered down at his dark, hooved limbs to make sure nothing had changed. A sigh of relief escaped his lips as he realized that whatever the hell that had just happened was all a dream...
