It'd felt like a lifetime ago when Naberus last walked the slopes of Amaravati. Yet another lifetime ago he was in a cave, and a third one ago, he was a child living on the coast. Naberus had already been through more lifetimes than a stallion his age should ever go through, but here he was, starting up what he'd consider his fourth as King. He wasn't particularly optimistic, but he hoped he'd at least put his experiences to good use. Despite all the terrible things he'd gone through, there were several bright spots; persistent rays of sunshine that broke through the storm clouds. While his family had always been the closest to him, Naberus found that he actually had friends now. Good friends, that he trusted and would stand by. The sheer amount of violence and uncertainty in the world made trustworthy allies something more valuable than gold. It was for that reason, Naberus thought it'd be best if his friends at least knew of each other. Everyone had met Queen at this point and the jaguar was not ever far from his side, but he hadn't introduced his childhood friend to anyone. After the sort of shit he'd gone through, it made Naberus feel guilty that he'd just taken for granted that Balt would be by his side. It felt like time to fix that... it felt like time to fix a lot of things.
The two stallions climbed the green mountains with a little less ease than their feline companion. Naberus could recall trying to get his strength back on these slopes after his ordeal. Just walking to Amaravati the first time should've rebuilt all the muscle he'd lost. Even now, he was starting to get out of breath as they approached the border. A quick glance back to Queen (who was fine) and Balt (who was huffing even harder) made the young king feel a little better about his fitness. If he had to admit one thing, it was the Versai had to be fit for all the goddamn climbing they did. Luna was quickly becoming a shining example of what the group ought to be. She was certainly fit and Naberus placed all his hopes for the future of the Versai on her. It would be a lot of pressure, but the obsidian stallion was certain they could make the changes needed. No longer would a group go on, masquerading as pure Lights when they mindlessly slaughtered.
Once at the border, Naberus halted and peered around the meadow surrounding them. He figured there ought to be some sort of guard or patrol coming along soon. Was it still rude if he just walked in? Maybe if it was just him it'd be alright, but it was rude now that he had a friend? The stallion snorted as he considered pleasantries and settled for taking several more strides into the land - just making sure he was definitely where he wanted to be. "Luna!" he called out with an irritated flick of his tail. Surely, there would be a better way someday to summon someone than to just yell for them? It felt silly, but nevertheless, he was here with a mission. "I've brought you a present," Naberus continued, the slightest bit of humor slipping into his voice. He wasn't sure how Luna would react just yet to meeting Balt, but he hoped the two would get along.

Balt had to admit, when Naberus had first suggested going to visit a friend, he'd questioned if the king had fallen ill. Throughout childhood, really the only interactions he'd seen Naberus have were with his own family and rarely outsiders. Balt was aware that the then prince had met others throughout the kingdoms, but he wasn't sure any of them were "friends". A lot had certainly changed over the last year or so. The once bratty colt was now a much more serious stallion. Balt watched the changes with concern and did his best to aid his friend. Being attacked had to be a harrowing experience - for anyone - but even worse with the question of another family member's fate hanging in the air too. Fortunately, both Naberus and his father were home now, but not unscathed. Coreion had been gravely injured and still suffered a limp and... he was not always "all there" all the time now. Meanwhile, Naberus had suffered mostly mental trauma, it seemed. When Balt's friend had returned home, he seemed fit enough, but clearly had been lacking decent food for some time. That ended up nothing compared to the thoughts that seemed to haunt the king. It was upsetting to see a friend in such a state, but Balt had already decided not to leave Naberus's side again. There were too many dangers. Even the replacement king had gone missing! There was bound to be more violence in the future, and he would not sit by passively and let it happen.
So when Naberus suggested to not only visit a friend, but to climb into Versai territory, Balt was quick to agree. There was no way in hell he was letting his small friend tread alone through not only the freelands (where anyone could be waiting), but into Versai territory that they were still on shaky ground with. He understood that 'Luna' was supposed to be a friend, but that didn't mean the rest of the Sisterhood was. Balt was quite the huge beast, towering at 21.3 hands and above all others he'd met so far. He'd use this behemoth status to protect his king with his life. There would be few foolish enough to attack them.
Although, there was a slight downside.
Traversing the Versai territory meant climbing. Like a lot of climbing. Balt found himself panting by the time they finally arrived to where Naberus decided would be the place to wait. He huffed and puffed as he tried to catch his breath, though stood tall with ears erect. They had an apex predator at their hooves to alert them of danger, but he would not be caught unprepared. Naberus called out and Balt tensed as he waited, his gaze scanning the slopes around them. He hoped that this would go as well as Naberus thought it would.

Saniyya was not having a good week. She’d met with Trinity recently and discovered that Aurora was missing from her lands. That was distressing enough, and then had come attempts on their herds. Sani knew that Huxley was missing, taken by Sly, and suspected that similar strikes may have occurred on the other Versai herds. She had had to stamp down on her sudden urge to go to the Helkaer lands, get her herdmate and whoever else had been stolen back, and drown the lands themselves with water. Certainly whatever Afterlife entity had given them their powers would answer her call for water, and no Helkaer flame could take root in a land soaked through. But she’d sat on that urge, too, knowing that as much as she needed to plan and act, the Versai were also weak. Aurora was gone; Trinity was scarily pregnant and could not do anything overly strenuous. She alone remained to guard the Highlands, she alone remained healthy. So instead of immediately galloping to Lyrarcor to confer with Trinity and assault the Outlands, she’d first checked on the security of her own lands and comforted her herd members. She would do better at protecting them. She resolved to do so as much as she could.
The silver dapple black was completing what well may have been her tenth border patrol round of the morning. Weariness was gathering even in her fit muscles. The Rocky Mountain Horse knew she was built to scale terrain like this, but even this tired her out after as many rounds as she had completed. What was good, though, was that she could intercept visitors very quickly, and that was why it took little time at all to immediately pivot and run when a voice called out her alias – a familiar voice. Naberus? Was something wrong in the Light Kingdom too?! Restraining a neigh of frustration, Sani doubled her pace, though she slowed slightly when Naberus followed his initial words with I’ve brought you a present. He sounded like he was in a good mood – maybe things weren’t going to hell over in his corner of Wild Equines after all? Snorting, Sani’s silver eyes lit with curiosity as she approached, sniffing the air and detecting two scents. Maybe Naberus knew what had happened and had brought someone who could help? Was that his present?
In almost no time at all, Sani appeared, bounding off the mountain and across the meadow, energetic but clearly somewhat fatigued. There was no mistaking the sweat running off her silver dapple black skin nor the subtle note of weary anger in her eyes, but she blinked and couldn’t help the smile on her face as she met Naberus’s gaze and noticed the very, very tall stallion at his side. Almost Xerxes-tall, really. She was practically a foal in height next to him, at a little over fifteen hands. Naberus! she neighed, tone unexpectedly warm – she really did like seeing him again, didn’t she? Sani missed having him around Amaravati, even though he wasn’t there because he was performing far more important duties as Light King. She eyed the stallion at his side curiously – a friend? Someone else? He was rather handsome, actually, even if he was rather tall. In truth, both he and Naberus were handsome…but she couldn’t let herself be distracted by that. She had to stay focused! Especially since she caught sight of a particular symbol on his right hip – Nephilim, right? She’d never come face to face with it, though Trinity and Aurora had described what that symbol had looked like in training. Why was a Nephilim here?
Hello she neighed, tone neutral and dipping her head in the direction of the other stallion. He looked tense. She wasn’t sure what else to say until Naberus got around to explaining who this other horse was, and reintroducing herself as Luna would be stupid after Naberus had already called for her by alias. She also greeted Queen, sending a friendly enough nicker in her direction. Naberus had asked once if he and Queen could eat her. Now, though, she knew Queen was Naberus’s steadfast companion. Hopefully whoever had been attacking Light Kings would be deterred by the presence of such a predator at the king’s side. A present? she questioned, attempting to lighten her tone as she turned back to Naberus. She tried not to sound too stressed about it, really, but it was hard to be as relaxed as she’d like to be around Naberus with a Nephilim stranger at his side, especially because everything else going on had already set her on edge. Strangers had the tendency to set her even more on edge right now. The Versai seemed to have enemies everywhere.

Maybe it was because Naberus had grown up with such a limited social circle that his excitement was matched with anxiousness. Seeing how tense (and not just out of breath) his childhood friend was made him doubt himself a little bit. Queen sat by, looking utterly bored, and he knew she'd be no help. Still, his gut told him that this would be the correct course of action. Naberus had so few allies and friends in the world that if he could knit that tiny web together, perhaps it could grow into something stronger. So, as he stood awkwardly, waiting for Luna, he decided to double down on his decision and just use all those social skills he'd grown during his time in the cave to make things go well. Right.
By the time Luna appeared, Naberus was also a bit tense. The young king perked right up at the sight of his silvery friend, but was all nerves as she grew closer and he realized he'd have to introduce her to Balt and vice versa. Was there really a proper way to do that? Was it just an exchange of names or did he have to give the whole story of how they met? This was going to be a lot more difficult than he'd thought... "Naberus!" Luna greeted warmly upon her approach, drawing the onyx stallion's attention. Right, right. They were friends. Why wouldn't Luna want to meet one of his friends - especially Balt? Everyone loved Balt, usually more than they loved Naberus. What if they ditch me for each other? he shook his head quickly at the intrusive thought, reminding himself that these two were his friends and this would be a good thing - he'd decided so.
"A present?" Luna inquired, her tones warm, but not as relaxed or excited as Naberus had expected. Then again, on another look, Luna did seem a bit tense overall. Maybe he really should have asked about her meeting Balt instead of just dragging the behemoth to her front door. Oops. "It's good to see you again," he greeted warmly, trying to shake the nerves that'd rattled themselves to life. He decided to forego the entire life story behind their relationships and instead got to work introducing the two in as elegant of manner as he could, "Luna, this is Balt. Balt, Luna." Naberus nodded between the two, confident that he'd accomplished exactly what an introduction was meant to do. It was then that he realized he hadn't explained why he had randomly shown up with another stallion. "Ah!" he quickly turned back to Luna, catching the smug look Queen sent his way, "Balt is your present!" Though as soon as the words left his mouth, he realized that was not quite what he meant to say. It wasn't like he was selling his best friend off... or something. "I mean, the present is that I brought him here to meet you... and it's a present to him too, to get to meet you, and, uh," he trailed off, feeling his face heating from this terribly handled introduction. "Balt has been my friend since we were foals. I thought it'd be good for you two to meet each other," he paused then, hoping that this would make sense to more than just him and that his friends might humor him, "there aren't that many you can trust. I thought it would be good to introduce you both to someone other than me that can have your back."
