Another king was missing. Another king was crowned. For the first time in a while, Malart had actually attended the coronation. In fact, all but Valinor had attended. It was not often that the young buckskin socialized. She did not blame her mother for being a touch paranoid and had tended to avoid going anywhere with the quadruplets as they grew up. Considering everything her Mama and Aunt Astraea had endured, not to mention the things that happened even after evil Uncle Galaga had been stopped... Well, in truth, the only ones who could probably be said not to have any paranoia would be the very young or those who were newer to the lands and less familiar with the rather persistent history of tragedies. And with the newest king to vanish, it would seem that it was not restricted to those of her family, though Malart had been beginning to wonder. She was not sure how she felt about being wrong. Then again, she supposed even before the former King Solovey had vanished, plenty of others even outside of the Light Royal herd had vanished before. Though the only ones she knew about were connected to her family. Like her paternal grandsire and Uncle Karthus, who like her own father, had both vanished without a trace.
Was this sort of thing normal after all?
Perhaps the less normal thing was for them to return the way Coreion and Naberus had.
Which did not bode well for poor Solovey. Or Grandfather Aranu, who years later was still missing.
A heavy sigh escaped the buckskin overo. The paths her mind seemed intent on meandering this morning were not particularly wonderful. Unfortunately, she was pretty sure her mother and siblings were all still sleeping. So there would be no distraction from that quadrant. Valinor leaving early on the never-ending search for Grandfather Aranu -- and now Solovey as well -- had woken Malart, but much as she wanted to be useful... Valinor was not always the best company. Especially for someone who had not been much part of the years-long search. Never mind that there were reasons for Mama being nervous about venturing too far away from home and anxious about the quadruplets doing the same. Valinor was not a fan of what she viewed as excuses.
So... Malart found herself usually just avoiding her. Maybe someday they would find Grandfather Aranu and Valinor would be the happy girl Aearion said she used to be before Grandfather Aranu went missing.
That would be nice.
A soft splash captured Malart's attention and she lifted dark blue eyes to see Uncle Taliesin further along the shore. Momentarily confused, she watched curiously for a moment before she realized what he was doing. Trotting up to join him, she queried, 'Can I help?' His perpetually sorrowful violet eyes met hers, but he nodded gently. She hesitated only a moment, watching to see precisely how he did it, before joining in gently removing trapped fish from the tide pools and releasing them back out in the wide ocean. Living in a world without sound was strange. She could not hear, born entirely deaf in both ears, but since she'd been born this way she had no idea of life with sound. She still saw life vividly, nothing wrong with her vision at all, and for her, that was enough to find happiness. The sunrises and sunsets she'd witnessed may have been silent, but they were beautiful. She may never hear her mother's voice, may never hear the sound of her own name, or the sound of a thunderstorm or birdsong in the spring, but she could see the world around her and she found nothing but beauty in that. She could not imagine a life where she could not see, and was unfazed by the fact that she could not hear. She could feel the energy of the world around her, more in tune with the vibrations that most other equines missed. She had a heightened sense of smell as well, or perhaps she just paid more attention to it, given that it was her greatest way of not being snuck up on if someone was in her blind spot. The slightest shifting of the wind and she would know someone was nearby. That was what grabbed her attention today. It was not the sound of splashing, but the scent of other equines nearby where she stood, gazing into a tide pool where a lone fish now swam. She felt sorry for the fish, watching it swim pitifully in circles - looking for a friend, perhaps... or family... She sighed and looked up, watching the other two equines at a short distance away from her. More early risers, it would seem. Curious as to what they were doing, walking back and forth from tide pools to the sea, she watched carefully. When she realized what they were doing, bringing the trapped fish from the pools back to the ocean, she smiled. Whinnying loudly (not that she meant to, of course, she just was excited and still found it difficult to monitor how loud she was), the filly bobbed her head until she'd gotten the attention of the other two. She swung her head in a "come here" motion, motioning then down at the pool in front of her and then out toward the sea. Not confident in speaking despite having the ability to, Anastasia rarely tried to say anything and relied almost entirely on body language to communicate. Hoping the other two equines would realize what she meant, she stood there waiting with a curious tilt to her head, ears perked forward to show her interest in what the duo were doing. True to Calliope fashion, she was doing a bit of wandering. Or a lot a bit. That was usually all she did. However this time, unknown to her, she had stumbled into occupied lands. Lands of whom? She did not know, but scents were all around her. Pungent and going in all directions. Whoever it was that lived here, seemed to be quite an active bunch. Normally, she would have found her way out as quickly as she had found her way in, but the warm atmosphere calmed her soul. And the scent of the ocean drew her in. She couldn’t help herself, she loved a good beach. The deep golden dappled and white woman found herself within a forest with moist, black dirt and the healthiest looking trees she had seen in a long time. The scent of the ocean was piquant as she navigated her way towards it. It was not long before the soil began to mix with tan specks of sand, and eventually it was mostly sand and nearly no soil. She could see the sky through the edge of the tree line, the early morning sun beaming through. Calliope slowed as she neared the edge. Her lilac and cerulean orbs moved across the landscape, and she found three equines. Two hovered over rocky formations, likely tide pools… doing something. And a young lady running towards them. Calliope’s harks flicked forward watching curiously as the scene unfolded before her. A whinny echoed from the filly’s muzzle, but it sounded… off somehow. It was loud, loud enough for Calliope to hear it with ease from the opposite direction from which the filly traveled and it seemed tone-deaf? Like the familiar notes were lost, leaving it sounding without cadence. She watched the young mare attempt to grab the others attention before scurrying back to another rocky formation. She motioned from the tide pool to the ocean. What was she attempting to do? And just like that, curiosity killed the cat. Calliope’s tan and black hooves began motion as she broke from the tree line at a brisk walk. Her boxy, but feminine, head was low as she approached the other equines. She was aware that these were likely equines that lived in these lands, and she needed to be respectful. As she approached the filly, she nickered lowly, unaware she could not hear her. But at least the other two would also be alerted by her presence. She slowed her gait as she halted several feet away, in case she needed to scramble and boogey her way out of here. She was trespassing after all and these equines were well within their right to chase her out. Calliope watched the filly and peered down towards the rocky tide pool that she was so incredibly worried about. But for what reason? The golden and white woman took a few steps forward, enough that she could just see into the tide pool. There, a fish swam in panicked circles. Calliope felt pity for the fish and, her eyes shifted back towards the obviously distressed filly, so did she. Movement caused Calliope’s eyes to shift up as the other equine’s were probably alert of the young woman’s call. She let her famously warm smile form on her kissers as she looked towards the equines, ”Poor little guy seems to have found himself quite stuck in here, huh?” Her warm, velvety voice leaked from her lips as she watched the fish swimming in circles. ”I’d like to help free him, if you’d allow me to assist.” She said in a slightly louder, but gentle, tone. Still, blissfully unaware that the filly likely could not hear her, but she spoke loud enough that the other horses could, hopefully, hear her and know her intentions. words;;648 timeline;;Just wandering about; late summer, very early morningcharacter;; Calliopetag;; Indi & fleabittengray notes;; Hope yall don't mind Calli wandering in. Glad of the distraction from worries by helping her uncle free any of the fish they found trapped in the tide pools after the storm the previous night, Malart did not immediately realize they were no longer alone on the shoreline. Taliesin, however, immediately picked up on the fact. For a moment, his entire frame tensed in a way that certainly captured Malart's attention immediately, and, worried, she was about to ask what was wrong. However, before she could ask, she realized that he was staring past her. And his body was relaxing once more. Turning, the buckskin damsel recognized another resident of Rain Forest Beach. A newer arrival, she believed to have come with Solovey when he had been crowned king. Or had it been a little after? Before he had disappeared and her cousin, Naberus, had become king at least.
Accustomed to her uncle's communication by way of body language, Malart readily recognized the unspoken "come here" gesture of the youngster and, knowing Taliesin would follow, trotted forward with a grin as she called, though trying to be audible enough was difficult, 'We're coming! What's up?' Like the mare who had just arrived on the scene as yet unnoticed by the buckskin damsel, she was not yet aware that the filly could not hear.
Once again, Malart realized that her uncle was no longer following. Halting, she turned to glance over her shoulder to see Taliesin once more eyeing something -- no, someone -- warily. His body was tensed again, at least for the first few moments. However, unlike with the youngster they had been approaching, his bay overo frame was still very much tensed. Not enough for Malart to fear that whoever had killed her great-grandmother had found their way to Rain Forest Beach. But after what he had witnessed, she could not blame her uncle for being nervous about every stranger that appeared. Pausing long enough to press her muzzle to his shoulder in as reassuring a gesture as possible, warm blue eyes sympathetic, she turned her attention once more to the other equines present.
'Looks like the storm trapped quite a few fishes up here on the shore,' she observed, hoping the ocean-side sounds did not drown out her voice as she halted near the golden-dappled and ivory stranger, passing a warm smile also to the filly she knew to be a fellow resident of the Royal land. 'My uncle likes to come here after storms and return everyone he can back to the ocean.' Gesturing over her shoulder to the stallion slowly following, she added, 'My uncle's name is Taliesin and I'm Malart, by the way.' Though she was young, Anastasia did not expect everyone to immediately realize that she was deaf. Especially considering she was still quite young, other equines were quick to assume she was in "perfect health" - which, technically, she was! Aside from the whole being entirely deaf thing, of course! But she never allowed that to stop her from enjoying life, exploring Rain Forest Beach and even the Free Lands (though usually, when leaving home, she didn't leave by herself - just in case!). She was trusted to explore her family's home without a constant pair of eyes supervising her, however, which was something recent that had happened. She was almost a year old at this point, so her family was starting to let her spread her wings a bit, so to speak. She was glad they trusted her enough to let her explore home on her home. All smiles, she was looking at the two other residents of the beach (she recognized their scents). When another scent came to her, she turned her head with wide eyes full of warmth and friendliness in the direction of another equine approaching. This one she did not recognize. The other girl, older than herself by a few years at least, began to speak but alas, Anastasia couldn't hear a word. Sheepishly, she shrugged at the other maiden before turning her attention to her herd mates, wondering if they might know who she was or at least that she was deaf. However, it didn't seem like they realized she was deaf, either, which put her in a slight predicament. Blinking at the now trio of equines, the filly huffed, contemplating the situation, before she began to dramatically - almost comically - swivel her ears a few times. Afterward, she shook her head and shrugged again. She hoped that would help the trio of horses before her understand that she could not hear. She was somewhat capable of reading lips, but it was a skill she was still learning, something that would become easier with time.
