radovan
Radovan was honestly not sure what exactly he was doing anymore. His home had burned. His family had scattered. They were all staying in Mount Vigilum until the land was all cleaned up and safe. He was angry and confused and hurt. He didn't understand why they were doing this. What had Dark Woods ever done to them? They had attacked and burned down their home for no reason. It hadn't hit him yet that his home would never look the same ever again. He did know one thing though - he was sick of being cooped up in Mount Vigilum. He wanted to go back home. He wanted to help his mom in whatever way that he could. He knew that he wasn't big or strong yet... but there had to be some way for him to help! With this thought in mind, he had set out away from Mount Vigilum, determined to find his way back to Dark Woods and help out where ever he could. However, there was a slight problem. He had no idea where he was going.
He thought he knew the way back to his home. Perhaps, foolishly, he thought that he would somehow instinctively know the way, that the very fact that this was his home made it impossible for him to get lost. He was rather mistaken. It had taken them a couple of hours to get to Mount Vigilum, though no doub their travel had been slowed due to the sheer number of them and trying to make sure everyone was safe and headed in the right direction. Radovan figured he would make it back in the same amount of time. However, it had certainly been two hours now and he was nowhere near anything recognizable. In fact, it felt like he had just wandered around in circles. He was still next to some mountains, roaming in the wooded area right beneath them. He flattened his ears to his skull, embarrassed and frustrated at himself. He'd tried to do a good thing and he'd just ended up getting himself lost. What was he going to do now? There weren't any horses around here.
He continued along the path, wondering if he was going to be lost forever. What was he going to do?! He let out a sigh, wondering if he should just turn back and try to get back the way that he came. However, before he could debate it much further, he spotted a shape laying on the ground. He walked further, his curiosity getting the better of him. As he got closer, he noticed that it was a foal - not much older than he was. The foal's eyes were wide as he met Radovan's gaze. "Please help me," the foal pleaded. He was holding his leg up off the ground. It looked like it had been bitten by something. "What happened? What's your name?" Radovan asked, stepping closer to the foal. They were probably around the same age. "It... It was a lion," the colt said, starting to cry, "it bit me. I managed to get away b-but it might come back..." Radovan tensed at this. So that's why there were no horses around this area.
"My name's Sal," the colt said. He struggled to get up. Radovan went to his side, trying to support the colt as he stood - though there was only so much he could do. He wished that he were bigger. Sal managed to stand, though he held his leg up as he did so. "C'mon we gotta get outta here," Radovan said. He glanced around, "do you remember where you came from?" Sal nodded in the direction that Radovan had just come from. "I was j-just playing... hide-and-seek," Sal let out another sob, "I went t-too far." Radovan smiled kindly at him. "Well, no one found you," he said, chuckling lightly, trying to lighten the mood. He still felt a great sense of urgency, but getting Sal all worked up and fearful wouldn't help anyone out. He began to walk, offering Sal his shoulder. The colt limped beside him. His leg glistened with blood, though it only left a faint trail. Radovan wished it wasn't leaving a trail at all, but that's the hand they'd been dealt.
They continued along, chatting along the way. Sal lived in the Light territories. He'd been out playing with his friends in Dimato Meadow - playing hide-and-seek. He thought he'd get clever and leave Dimato Meadow to hide. But then his curiosity had gotten the better of him as he kept wandering on. Then the mountain lion had attack him. They were pretty close to the mountains here. It bit him in the leg, but he managed to get away and hide in a burrow beneath some trees. He'd waited a while and then had wandered out of his hiding place, only to collapse where Radovan had found him. Radovan included his own sheepish tale of wanting to help out his mother and getting lost. At the mention of his home burning, Sal's eyes had gotten very wide. "We all saw the smoke," he said. His gaze drifted downward, "we didn't know what to do." Radovan hadn't known what to do either. "I just wanted to help my mom," he said and his shoulder slumped, "I guess I couldn't even do that." Sal smiled at him, even though he was probably exhausted, scared, and in a lot of pain, "you helped me instead." He remarked. Radovan returned the smile.
It had been a decent half hour before Radovan started to get the feeling that they were being watched. It was not dark yet, but it would be in a few hours. Radovan glanced around. Sal followed his gaze. "What is it?" He asked. Radovan didn't answer. He glanced into the trees and saw a flash of eyes. He immediately began to pick up the pace and Sal matched him. The colt's eyes were wild again and his limp was becoming more pronounced. Radovan opened his mouth to encourage Sal to go faster - perhaps even flee ahead of Radovan so he had a chance to survive - but he didn't get the words out before the cat leaped out at them from the trees. Radovan pushed Sal down to the ground and hunched over him. The cat bowled Radovan over, digging his claws into his shoulders. He screamed. He could no longer see Sal - the cat loomed over him. The cat was huge, but it had obviously seen better days. It was thin and battle-hardened, with multiple scars stretching across its face and legs. Radovan's eyes met the cat's own. There was no hatred in its eyes, just hunger and desperation. The cat had been forced to come down here for food.
Radovan waited for the end to come. I'm sorry mom.
Abruptly, the cat let out a shriek and turned around, detaching its claws from Radovan's shoulders. Radovan let out a shaky breath of relief and fell to the ground. His shoulders burned and he could feel blood trickling down his legs. The cat was swiping at something. Radovan struggled to his feet and saw Sal, teeth buried in the cat's tail. Radovan wanted to laugh, but held it down, instead trying to focus on what to do next. Before he could think of anything, the cat's claws caught Sal in the side. Sal shrieked and let go of the tail. Radovan leaped at the cat, trying to get its attention away from Sal. It worked, but only momentarily. The cat quickly dispatched him again with a paw swipe at his face. He screamed again, white-hot pain spreading across his right cheek. Blood dripped on the ground. They couldn't keep this up. They were only foals and they could only distract the cat back and forth for so long before they gave in. In fact, Sal had already given in. He was down on the ground again, heaving, his side bright with blood. The cat lunged at him and Radovan prepared for the worst.
However, the worst was not to come. Instead of killing him, the cat let out a shriek of its own as a dark shape barreled into it. It was a black horse like Sal. The cat snarled in frustration, backing away from the newcomer. The horse was tall and muscular, eyes wide with fury. "Get out of here, you pest," the mare spat. The cat glanced at the three of them, decided against it, and slunk away back into the trees. The black mare watched it go. Radovan swayed on his legs, struggling to keep his balance. He felt dizzy and faint from adrenaline. The mare was looking at Sal, helping him up again. His side was bleeding, but it didn't look too deep. Just painful as all hell. Radovan managed to walk toward the two of them. "Thank you," he said weakly. The mare looked at him and smiled, "no, thank you. You saved my boy's life." She looked back at Sal and nuzzled him affectionately.
"Come with us, we'll get you back home," she said, gesturing back the way she had come. Radovan felt a pang in his heart. I have no home, he thought. "Back to Mount Vigilum," he said to her. She looked a bit confused at that, since Mount Vigilum wasn't a herdland, but she nodded and began to walk, supporting Sal. Radovan walked alongside Sal. The colt beamed at him, even if his eyes were hazy with pain. The adrenaline was wearing off and Radovan's wounds were stinging furiously. At least Mount Vigilum has healers, he thought. He could bug them for some herbs or something for this. He didn't think his wounds were particularly deep, either. They just burned and would probably be in danger of getting infected. Cat's claws were hardly sanitary.
They walked for a long time. Sal's mother asked Radovan hushed questions, basic things like what his name was, where he was from, what exactly had happened. Radovan told her everything, thanking her all the while for coming just in time. Sal's mother explained that she'd followed his trail all the way here, fearing the worst when she noticed where the path lead. If not for Radovan coming by, he would have died for sure. Radovan beamed himself, feeling slightly embarrassed at it, but liking the fact that he'd been able to help someone, even if that hadn't been his mom.
Sal's mom paused and gestured toward the left, "that's the way to Mount Vigilum. Just keep heading straight and you'll go straight into the mountain." Radovan nodded, smiling again. "Thank you," he said, bowing his head respectfully before he continued onto Mount Vigilum. His family was probably worried sick by now, wondering where he'd gone. He'd certainly have an interesting tale to tell them about his encounter with a mountain lion. He'd probably have a couple of scars from this too. That didn't bother him, though. He'd earned them saving a new friend. He hoped he got to meet with Sal again someday. He lived in the Light lands - perhaps he could go and visit him.
He kept walking, feeling completely exhausted as time went on. He'd been excited to tell his adventures, but now all he wanted to do was curl up and sleep somewhere. His jaws gaped in a yawn. Eventually, however, he could hear voices and could just barely see the mountain peaks by the light of the crescent moon. He was abruptly greeted by someone in the dark, though he didn't know who until she started speaking. "Where've you been? We've been worried sick!" It was Vojorn, his older half-sister. "I'm okay," he said, his voice weary. She touched him on the shoulder and jerked away when it came away wet with blood. "What the hell happened?" She demanded. "I wandered off... I-I thought I could help mom," he looked down again, feeling sheepish and young and irresponsible. "I wanted to find Dark Woods, but I got lost. Instead I found a foal named Sal... he had been attacked by a mountain lion. We got away with the help of his mom," he said. Vojorn was a curious one and he knew that this brief story would not satisfy her. "I'm so tired though... I just want to go to sleep," he mumbled. "Yeah, of course you are. Being all heroic is exhausting," she teased him. He butted her in the shoulder. "C'mon, let's go. You should get those wounds cleaned up before you sleep, though. Sorry to say," she said. He groaned, but he nodded. He didn't want to survive the attack only to die from infection later. That wouldn't be very heroic, now would it?
