It was the middle of the night, and for some ungodly reason Calla was out and about with Titan. The colt scrambled next to her as they followed the sorrel stranger that had showed up with a promise. A promise to bring them to Calla’s father, Predator. She wasn’t sure why she bought it, or why she even cared to find her father. He was good to her before her mother took her from their home but by the time Calla returned she had seen him one time before he vanished. ”how much longer will it take? We’ve been walking for hours.” When they had left it was still light out, and now just a sliver of moon guided their way, though even that was drowned out by clouds. Her harks pinned back at the lack of a response, getting thoroughly irritated with the situation now. ”Hello?” She snapped, now irritated. Still no response. Calla stopped in her tracks, reaching next to her and lowering her muzzle to her sons withers to reassure herself that he was still there. There were no more footsteps, and she couldn’t see the strange mare that had gotten her here. A wolf howled in the distance, causing Titan to scramble in closer to his mother, leaning into her side as he buried his head between her front legs. ”I didn’t come here to play some sick game of hide and seek lady, where are you?” Calla was doing her best to keep collected, though she could feel some worry settling in. She didn’t even know where she was, or what direction she had came from. ”Mommy….” Titan muttered, exhausted. They had been walking for a long time and on any normal day he would have been in bed long ago. He wasn’t fond of the dark, most of the time his mother made sure to get him tucked in before the sun fell so this was all new to him.
Calla’s words had no audience but her and her son, she reached her muzzle down to the young lad, pondering briefly as to what she should do next. It was pitch black, even the moon and stars were suffocated by stars and without a clue as to where she was she couldn’t feel safe hunkering down. Predators could be anywhere, watching her and her son as they stood helpless in the dark. ”Stay close, son.” Calla said as calm as possible. It would not do either of them any justice for her to panic at this point, the last thing she wanted was Titan freaking out and slowing them down. She stood there, still for a moment, just listening to her surroundings. They could turn around and go back the way that they came but there were so many twists and turns that she knew they would get lost anyways. Why would that stag just up and leave them in the dark like this? She couldn’t fathom why anyone would get off with such a sick game, and if she did find him Calla was going to tear him to pieces for such foolishness. It was one thing to leave her in danger, but her infant son was crossing the line. Though she could still hear the howling of wolves occasionally, they seemed distant and uninterested in her. She decided to move the opposite direction of where they were, taking caution with every hoof that hit the ground. Every time Titan tried to move to her shoulder she would nudge him back towards her hindquarters, wanting to make sure that if she took a wrong step she would have time to stop him from doing the same.
Titan was struggling to find the energy to keep moving, his little legs getting sore and stiff. He didn’t understand what was happening, why they were walking so far so late. Though he wanted to ask so badly he just knew this wasn’t the time to be asking and just kept huffing along next to his mother. It was strange, and scary, to be walking without being able to see what’s in front of him. There was the slightest amount of light showing through the clouds covering the moon, it was only enough to show shapes and shadows, not actually make out what anything was. ”Can we go to bed soon?” It was almost a plea, and probably the first time in his short life that he had actually requested to go to bed. Nothing smelled familiar here, which meant this wasn’t one of the many places they had traveled to together. The biggest scent he could catch was the unpleasant musk here, like it was wet all the time, it was not a good smell. He snorted, leaning sideways to make sure his mother was still close as they moved forward. Off in the distance he could hear water running, and they seemed to be getting closer and closer to the sound.
Calla didn’t respond to her sons question, mostly because she just didn’t have an answer. They just needed to keep pushing forward. She felt awful dragging him out so late, it wasn’t a good idea to begin with, she just wasn’t thinking. The sound of water drew her in, she wanted so bad to pick up her pace but knew she couldn’t expect Titan to go any faster. Calla hadn’t heard any intimidating noises in a while now which brought her a small sense of comfort. Finding her father had most certainly not been worth this, it wasn’t even worth her time. She had a shitty mom and pretty much no dad and did just fine, not once did she lay awake missing either of them. Family was something she had to create for herself, something that she didn’t have before her children. Despite her not having great stories to tell about her parents, Calla did want her children to have in least a mother to brag about and be close to. From the time Odette hit the ground she was the center of her universe, it softened Calla in a way that she didn’t think was possible.
Finally they were close enough that Calla could see the shape of the waterfall and she breathed a sigh of relief. Nomalanga. She had been here once before in passing but the waterfall was a dead giveaway. Calla stopped, lowered her head to Titan “Just a few more minutes, let’s find somewhere to lay." She cooed, directing him to the right. She didn’t want to sleep too close to the water source, knowing all kinds of creatures good and bad frequented there. She had to dodge trees, sometimes scraping against them as she could barely see even more now that they were in a wooded area. After walking for a little ways, she felt like they were at a safe distance and laid down between two trees, letting Titan curl up next to her. She was not to sleep, as she didn’t trust the area enough, but would just lay there as the young colt rested until they could move once more in the morning.
