Motherhood had been an unexpected development in Karissa’s life. Admittedly, when she had realized there would be lasting consequences to her encounter with Oneiros, she had felt anything but ready for what was to come. However, though she had lacked the guidance of her own mother throughout most of her life and had thus developed a very strong independent streak… she had been grateful for the advice given by others in Dark Woods who had brought new life into the world. While she might not necessarily heed every single bit of advice given, she was still grateful for it. Certainly enduring the changes to her body, the assault upon her usually even temperament, and eventually the ordeal of bringing the foal into the world had been made far more bearable with the support of others. And she knew that if she ever needed help or advice in raising Ikelos, all she had to do was ask. Not that she was likely to do that, independent young damsel that she was. It did not bother her overmuch that Ikelos’ father was not in the picture, though she supposed she really ought to have made more of an effort to track him down and let him know that he had sired a son. It was not that she didn’t want Oneiros to know or have the opportunity to be involved if he wanted. She simply had not yet gotten around to really dedicating time to looking for him, busy as she had been with first preparing for her son and now busy with raising him.
As mother and son made their way through fresh snowfall toward Iosis Lake -- a trip promised before the aforementioned snowfall, unfortunately and for which Ikelos had been too eagerly anticipating for her to have the heart to disappoint him -- Karissa found herself idly pondering Oneiros. Would it bother him that she had never gotten around to letting him know that their few hours of fun had resulted in new life? Considering neither of them had put effort into creating something lasting between them —- though in a sense there had been something unintentionally lasting to be created -— she had assumed it would not matter to him. But she had to admit that she really had not the foggiest notion how he would feel about the matter. Perhaps she ought to make more of an effort to track him down again? At the very least, it couldn’t hurt for him to know.
A quick tug to her mane pulled Karissa from her new resolution and into the awareness that they had reached Iosis Lake. Ikelos was peering up at her with the most endearingly eager look and she could not help reaching down to ruffle his forelock. He gave a protesting squeal that shifted rapidly into a cry of glee as she nodded her assent to the unspoken question he had asked. With a cheerful whinny, the colt set off to explore. Always within sight, never too close to the water. And having the time of his life.
