Salem had surveyed the newcomers with an air of predatory anticipation as they approached the gathering, his obsidian eyes pierced through the crowd, looking over each individual to see if there was anyone in particular that drew his interest. One individual stood out amidst the throng, that he was particularly eager to meet. She was the picture of ethereal beauty. Her mere presence exuded an allure that he could feel reaching into his soul and curling around his blackened heart, a welcoming feeling that drew desire into every corner of his body.
He approached her with calculated grace, his senses heightened, and Salem relished in the glow of her skin and the melody of her breathing. Each thing about her called to him like a siren beckoning him closer, to join her in the deep end. And who was he to deny a lady? Especially one so gorgeous. While love was rather trivial to him, he wasn't against entertaining someone like her, especially if he got to bask in the glow of her. What could he say? He was a sucker for a pretty lady, even though he couldn't experience love he wasn't against the idea of taking a lady to call his own. He came to a stop in front of her, offering her a sly smile as he did so.
His eyes drank in every detail, savoring the sight of her. Her body shimmered almost as though it was painted in liquid gold, but it was her eyes, her gorgeous cerulean eyes that he found himself ensnared in. They shimmered like precious gemstones; they were a stark contrast to the darkness that sat within his dome, and he found it rather appealing. With a deceptive charm that belied his true intentions, Salem would dip his head to her in mock deference to the golden goddess before him, a mischievous smirk playing upon his lips. His ears flicked toward her in anticipation, attuned to her as he watched her with a predatory stare.
As his head lifted again, he would immediately greet her with a honey-covered voice, "Hello, my dear." he purred his voice a caress that masked his real intentions. "I am Salem, and I believe we may be paired together for this event. And I must confess, I cannot say I'm at all disappointed by this arrangement. You are gorgeous, and I just know your personality must be on par." His words were laced with sweetness, designed to ensnare her with false flattery.
With practiced ease, he offered her what appeared to be a genuine smile. He could only wonder why she had ended up here. Maybe she was naive enough to believe in love, or maybe she was growing lonely in this world. Both were rather laughable but alas he would be more than willing to entertain and provide that for her if she so needed. "May I ask what has brought you here today?" He would say softly, his eyes twinkling with genuine curiosity.

a d o r a atop a high branch, adora could see a brilliantly colored cardinal with his chest puffed out, swaying against the breeze in the eye of a female. he bleated and chirped, keeping her watchful gaze as long as he possibly could. every so often, a second male would appear, doing the same, but adora could see that the female was already too intent on the larger one at her side. "what curious creatures," she said to herself before her own cerulean eyes turned back to the other equines who lingered here. from across the clearing, adora couldn't help but let her attention befall the obsidian beast in all of his glory. without question, the mare could tell that he was already looking, and her stomach turned with ferocious anticipation. adora cared not for looks or glamour, but she felt no shame in looking. he must have noticed, too, because he was moving with ease through the crowd and straight for her.
it was like she braced for impact, rightfully so. salem was enveloped in her gaze, drinking in his size as if she was sizing up an opponent. he considered her with grace, and it did not take him long to make his greeting. "hello, my dear," he said. if she wasn't so anxious, the silver tongue would've been a cautionary warning to the war-born mare. alas, adora leaned in closer, invisible brow raised in curiosity. "i am salem, and i believe we may be paired together for this event." adora turned her ear toward the center of the gathering where she was given a quick yes from it's facilitator, focus returning back to the stag. he continued, adding; "and i must confess, i cannot say i'm all that disappointed. you are gorgeous, and i just know your personality must be on par." oh, gods, if she could've thrown up ... she would have for the simple fact that his attention was on her. she mirrored hm with a slight dip of her crown, a pleasantry she was happy to give. "salutations, salem. i can't say i'm at all disappointed, myself. you're made of midnight," the baroness of the shores said. a wry smile hit her face, leaning in and her tone quieted now. "i do believe you're right about us being paired." a soft, unintended chuckle made its way up her throat. the pale gold and white mare shifted her weight, face feeling flushed with heat, clearing her throat as salem spoke again. "may i ask what brought you here today?" adora took a moment to think about it: what was she doing here? loneliness, surely, yet ... she was far from alone with the shores now hers. the thought of love and goodness was tainted after the hell she had gone through in her homeland. once betrothed, adora had told herself that she was better off, anyway. there were plenty of things that needed her attention -- love was not one of them. it was then that she felt entirely too self aware, gaze turning to the other event goers. "same as any, i suppose; curiosity. my herd members believe that i should get out more." there was a gentle roll of her eyes that followed.
attention swinging back to the brute, adora shifted herself so that they were aligned with one another. there was something unnerving about salem and the air around him, but for now she would chalk that up to her frayed nerves. "now, what about yourself, then? i can't imagine a man like you wouldn't have better things to be doing. what brings you to this event?" surely he was not lacking in the attention of others, so what would drive such a stallion to come here? tilting her head, adora was unknowingly smirking in his direction. she liked this game, if that's what you'd call it. "i can't say it didn't appeal to my better nature. the sun is shining, spring is upon us. i'm happy to be here, wouldn't you agree?" she realized that not everyone might feel the same as she; adora was sick of the snow, ice and rains. she'd have taken mud over it any day, and most would have agreed with her. as years pressed on, she found herself less and less accustomed to the cold. "the turnout is better than i expected, don't you agree?" the mare said, looking onward at the unfamiliar faces as everyone joined their partners.

"Same as any, I suppose, curiosity. my herd members believe that I should get out more." His grin widened as she responded to his inquiry, followed by a nod of his dome. Maybe she wasn't as naive as the rest of them, that would make this all the more interesting, wouldn't it? It promised a challenge, an opportunity to make this little game into something that would allow him to toy with her until she was left gasping for breath in more ways than one. As her attention came back to rest on him, he found himself once again ensnared by the depths of her eyes, something that would have flustered him if he wasn't so detached. "Now, what about yourself, then? I can't imagine a man like you wouldn't have better things to be doing. what brings you to this event?" For a moment he appeared to think, head tilting to the side curiously. It was time to set the stage for the lady before him, he believed it was wise not the play into the whole love at first sight ideal with Adora. Instead, he would play it off like he was much like her, curious, hopeful, and maybe even lonely.
"I am much like you in that regard, Adora." He murmured, "Curiosity drives me as well, but also I am hopeful always hopeful that I find a pretty lady that can sweep me off my feet just as much as I can hers." He paused briefly as if contemplating his next words, his voice was soft coming off rather sincere. Even his eyes reflected a certain loneliness that was all too real even if it was for different reasons.
"It's a lonely world, is it not?" He continued, his voice tinged with something sad, that told of the emptiness inside. he looked away from her eyes for a second. "I believe everyone can only be lonely for so long before it starts to get to them. After all, we are social creatures, yet we wonder about this world alone. Searching always searching for something -or someone- to sedate that loneliness." For the most part, he wasn't lying here it was a lonely world. Just perhaps not so much for him, while a part of him craved to have someone to call his own it wasn't for love. He craved another's flesh in lust just as much as he did in battle, the only difference was in how much he made them bleed.
"I can't say it didn't appeal to my better nature. the sun is shining, spring is upon us. I'm happy to be here, wouldn't you agree?" His lips twitched at her words, before lifting into a soft smile. "It is a rather beautiful day, isn't it? Not a cloud in sight." His ears twitched before he turned to look up at the sky, it was indeed a nice day. Then his eyes caught sight of a rather large pair of birds flying together. Those little animals could be so romantic, couldn't they? His eyes narrowed in on the pair of vultures twisting through the air, if he listened hard enough, he could almost hear their courting calls. Salem turned towards offering her a boyish grin, "While the weather is rather beautiful, I believe I've found something even more gorgeous to turn my attention to don't you agree, Adora?"
He purred out her name almost teasingly, his eyes scanning her face once more. She was very easy to look at it was as if she was graced by the very goddesses herself, a part of him wondered what her soul would look like. He had a feeling beneath those eyes of hers, there was a darkness that mirrored his own; a certain allure to her that made him want to learn every single corner of her mind and soul. "The turnout is better than I expected, don't you agree?" His dome turned to face the others; eyes narrowed as he took them all in. "Yes, it is very much better than I thought it would be, I am much happier with the company I've found myself with than I thought I would be."

a d o r a her skepticism was warranted, she thought, watching the way he so simply observed her. his focus remained at her eyes. as adora raised them, salem lowered to their whim, and it continued as they stood there in the clearing. "i am much like you in that regard, adora," caught her attention without trying. intently, she leaned in to listen, his tones softer than she might have expected. speaking of someone sweeping him off his feet and offering the same. adora chuckled and nodded. she was entirely unsure what she wanted from this event; what she didn't want was strings, not yet. barely having lead the shores long enough to be known, adora knew that she was an easy target, especially with harlan existing within the same land. there was never enough time in a day as it was, what would such a big distraction mean? "it is a lonely world, is it not?" at that, the pale mare dipped her head, carefully considering his words. "of course. should it not be? lonely, and big. it's hard to manage things you cannot control."
adora mirrored him and let her eyes wander to where his gaze fell. "i had a lover once who told me it was a labor of love, the loneliness. we bare it so they don't have to." with that, she too looked away. she recognized few of the other horses but she imagined her herd. as new as she was to them, they were her responsibility. she took that job on without a second look back, glad to do it. for all the things that stallion wasn't, he had been right about it, at least in her eyes. the members of sunset shores depended on her and adora worked hard every day to make sure they were safe in that choice. as salem spoke again, her interest was piqued, head cocking to the side. "i believe that everyone can only be lonely for so long before it starts to get to them." truth. "after all, we are social creatures, yet we wander about this world alone. searching, always searching for something - or someone - to sedate that loneliness." was this his truth?
adora was never opposed to company or filling voids. "a never ending search like that sounds tiresome," she admitted. "i much like the chance that someone may meet me in the middle. i don't want to search, instead ... find me while i am already moving forward." it was nice to vocalize that to someone. the mare had straightened her posture some as the black stallion looked upward to the sky as he spoke. she took a moment to look him over. cerulean eyes cascaded down the muscles along his neck and to his shoulder, lingering there for a time. salem was draped in the richness of darkness in a way that made her question if even the deepest reaches of the cosmos could compare. "i can't say it didn't appeal to my better nature. the sun is shining, spring is upon us. i'm happy to be here, wouldn't you agree?" adora smirked, shrugging her shoulder as she flickered her tail in his general direction. the gold mare wondered what his better nature was, if it matched the way his words so made it seem. "i can't say i've something to complain about, no. isn't that something?"
she was rather easy to please, at least.
the blackened stag threw a cheeky grin in her direction, and his words would've made her cheeks flush scarlet if they could. "while the weather is rater beautiful, i believe i've found something even more gorgeous to turn my attention to, don't you agree, adora?" she rather liked the way he said her name, ears perking forward at the sound. it was nice to feel like ... someone again. more than the stealer of husbands or thrones and more than the promised princess who ran from her problems. there was a short lived roll of her eyes, a shake of her head, and a shying away to where his attention moved toward the others. "who is she, then? saw your eyes wander there. i'd like to see my competition," adora jested, a soft whicker escaping her as she side stepped toward him and swung her hip to barely graze his barrel. "we can agree on that, surely. call us brave, i suppose. i do wonder how the couples are getting on at the geysir," she was daydreaming aloud, almost. there was a loneliness within her, one that made her envy the thought of having someone of their own. as driven as she was for her role at the shores, adora was young. flirtatious in nature, still dreaming of the could have been's if her life had been different.
salem grounded her attention back to the gathering. "yes, it is very much better than i thought it would be. i am much happier with the company i've found myself with than i thought i would be." a sense of foolish pride rippled across her face in the form of a raise of her eye. "as am i. and what a pleasant thing that has turned out to be," adora affirmed. it was sincere, at least, for her. regardless of what might come of the event, she was happy she'd been paired with this stallion. the turnout was good and she hoped that the others felt the same about their arrangements. "i do hope that the others are having just as much fun," she found herself saying quietly after a small pause. "i find it hard to believe everyone will be as interesting as you. maybe they’ll be half as lucky." she quirked her lips at him, tongue slipping out as a tease, but she meant it. it was nothing against the other horses, but she could feel something with this one and part of her wanted to covet it all to herself.
something within her was stirring. a voice, a nuance, telling her that she'd rather him go blind than ever be able to look upon another as hungerly as he did with her. the selfish gnawing was in the back of her mind. for whatever reason, a reason unknown to her, she did not mind it.

"Of course. should it not be? Lonely, and big. It's hard to manage things you cannot control." Salem's lip twitched as he nodded. Adora was rather insightful. She possessed a wisdom to her that made this conversation all the more interesting, and all the more captivating in his eyes. He wondered what other things about her would intrigue him just as much. His onyx eyes flicked to her as she spoke again, ears swiveling to face her. "I had a lover once who told me it was a labor of love, the loneliness. we bare it so they don't have to." As she looked away Salem found himself faced with something that intrigued him even more, she was experienced.
"I believe your lover was wise but also foolish, you can love someone and still feel lonely in their presence, and it goes the other way too. You can find someone that makes you feel so complete and still not love them. Loneliness and love are fickle things, they do not know how to play by the rules." He spoke softly although his tone had turned rather serious. Feelings were all fickle in his view, but he had seen what it had caused for others, both negatively and positively. He could understand to some degree he knew what emptiness felt like it was as if there was a part of you carved out and replaced with something cold and unfeeling. It was often a feeling that consumed his entire being when he was having an episode, left contemplating why a beast like him could feel that out of all things. The feeling was uncomfortable and made his skin itch and burn in a way that made him ready to rip and tear at it.
She spoke again and his dome turned back to her crest arching as he took her in once more, eyes taking her just as hungrily as they had before. He knew his gaze could be all-consuming, searching someone's soul as if needing to learn each one of their thoughts, and he enjoyed that part of him. "A never ending search like that sounds tiresome, I much like the chance that someone may meet me in the middle. I don't want to search, instead ... find me while I am already moving forward." He could feel his lips curling into a smile, she was smart and amusing a good combination for any toy. But also, something that could prove worthy of being more than someone just to fiddle with. Her views interested him, and a deeper part of him felt a dangerous craving to show her could entertain her ideals. Draw her into his shadows as long as she shares some of that precious sunlight with him.
"I believe someone worthy of you would be more than willing to meet you in the middle, to help you carve a path forward. Meet you step for step and make sure to protect and adore you every step of the way." His voice grew low, teasing, and careful. It was flirtatious and spoke of potential promises. He enjoyed the chase, showing how he could be the answer to their every desire. But what would the outcome be here? Usually, it was a conversation, a promise of more only for him to leave once they showed him how much they wanted him. He grew bored rather fast, but Adora? Now she was interesting, maybe just maybe interesting enough for him to want to keep her around. Even if it was just for a conversation or two more. He could feel her looking him over, a delightful shiver rushed down his spine and a flicker of something darker rested in his eyes.
She seemed to have enjoyed his comment, something he would have to remember. Sweet words and cheeky grins did it for her. Maybe she enjoyed the slight darkness that surrounded him, that was a rather appetizing thought, wasn't it? He watched her as she rolled her eyes and shook her head. Her gaze moving to the others, he was delighted in the way he made her shy away. "Who is she, then? saw your eyes wander there. I'd like to see my competition," He found himself smirking, and he returned her earlier eye roll even if it was barely noticeable. Her hip brushing against his side made him arch his metaphorical brow. His eyes traveled back to look over the crowd, acting as if he was genuinely searching for another. Before he lowered his head to her ear as if to tell her a secret, hot breath rushed from his maw as he spoke. "She is painted in gold, glorious to look at. As if she was made by the sunlight and earth, ready to capture the hearts and perhaps even souls of all who looked at her. Azure eyes that you cannot help but stare into, they are bright but speak of something deeper just as well. Her very presence is enough to draw you in and make you crave to be near her. Do you know who that is Adora?" His voice was heavy as he spoke to her, eyes focused on her as he pulled his head back just enough to look at her before offering her another grin. A soft chuckle escaped his throat as he pulled back the rest of the way. It was fun to play with this vixen. She was just as charming as she was smart. Usually, smarts could prove to be a problem, it was easier for them to catch onto his little game. But there was a part of him that found genuine interest in her.
"We can agree on that, surely. call us brave, I suppose. I do wonder how the couples are getting on at the geysir," He nodded softly, tilting his head as if needing to think of how to respond. "I would say if they were any good at romance probably swimming the pools, perhaps telling each other how much they mean to one another, talking about their futures, and maybe even showing one another how much they adore their partner." He purred out, as he smiled at her. "Do not worry Adora, I do not doubt you will or have caught the attention of someone willing to do all that and more for you." His words were playful, light, and teasing. They weren't meant to hint at him but if she took them that way, he would not correct her if she enjoyed the thought.
Her voice drew his ears forward as she spoke once more, "As am I. and what a pleasant thing that has turned out to be," He offered her a nod, it was rather pleasant wasn't it? He was glad to have been paired with such a lady. Very intriguing she was, an enigma he wanted to unravel, to learn how she worked. She was the perfect interest for some of his deeper, darker desires. He wondered what her blood would taste like. Perhaps just as sweet as her.
"I do wonder how the other's will get on, I find it hard to believe everyone will be as interesting as you." That was just exactly what he wanted her to believe, he wanted her to be so raptured by him that she paid no mind to anyone else. He wanted her to go home to her herd still thinking of the midnight stranger who called to her. A cocky smirk placed itself on his lips as she stuck her tongue out at him. "I will feel bad for the next one who catches your attention, they must live up to so much. But alas I feel even worse for whoever has to stand against the glory that is you darling." He cooed playfully with a toss of his head for dramatic effect, he was having fun. He wanted to leave her hungry for his presence, so if or rather when he sought her out again, she would be thrilled to see the demon again.
"I do hope there is a chance I will see you again after this. I will meet you in the middle if you wish. But I will warn you, once you venture into my world, I will find it hard to let you turn back." He purred the end was voiced in a teasing way, but he was also serious. She was just so interesting; he couldn't help but want to entice her. After all, that's what this event was supposedly for right? He couldn't deny the thought of her being interested in him didn't feed his ego, make him crave to see how far he could go with this little game.

a d o r a salem spoke of her lovers wisdom as well as his foolishness. adora smiled and, wher she normally may have responded defensively, nodded solemnly. he, too, seemed wise in his words. she asked herself what in life had seasoned him so, but she knew that would have to be a question for another day. ”loneliness and love are fickle things, they do not know how to play by the rules.” this was true on all fronts, adora noted to herself. ”aren’t they?” she asked, cerulean eyes casting down to the ground for a brief moment. ”powerful, fickle things that all too often come hand in hand.” there was a short shrug of her shoulder, basking in his eyes when they found her again.
”i believe someone worthy of you would be more than willing to meet you in the middle to help you carve a path forward. meet you step for step and make sure to protect and adore you every step of the way.” her golden sonars flickered at him, searching his face to decipher what might be behind those words. the lingering undertone of what ifs, maybes, swirling around in her brain like wisps of a birds flutter. ”you’d think, wouldn’t you? it’s slim picking these days. this world is full of oath-breakers & fearful lovers. it’s rather boring.” an invisible brow raised at him. a silent question; is that you? the darkness in his eyes did not go unnoticed.
adora liked the way it made her feel.
she didn’t like the way he played into her — scanning the crowd as if there might be someone else waiting for him. her ears pinned back, cerulean gaze carefully searching his face for something, anything, she could use against him if need be. adora was surprised when his attention was back to her and his breath was in her ear, heat traveling down to her pole.
things like this used to make her recoil. had she not known this part of herself yet? the loneliness hadn’t bothered her until today, until him, and the mare snorted at his words. adora was far from insecure but all the sweet words in the world had never phased her. salem, though … she wanted to ask him to say it again. all the nerves in her body prickled with excitement, catching the dark stag’s grin. ”i’m the only one standing here, am i not?” adora retorted, tail swishing as her muscles tensed and retracted, body shifting away a mere inch. the head high subsided as the conversation moved to the couples retreat, and the palomino was able to compose herself as salem offered his thoughts. ”lets hope, then, for their partners sake. what an awful pressure to feel.” it was teasing, but she also meant it in some ways.
she noticed that his pleasant tone almost didn’t match darkness her wore both physically and spiritually. she questioned it little. who was she to judge? ”do not worry adore, i do not doubt you will or have caught the attention of someone willing to do all that and more for you,” he said. it was a nice thought, no doubt. ”i am certain i can say the same for you, salem,” adora concurred with a hefty nod of her head. she would not be the only one with the pleasure of setting eyes on the stallion, surely. it was hard to not envelope yourself in his presence with how brightly his essence beckoned someone in, something she experienced within seconds of being near him. at his next words, adora straightened herself out. her blue eyes glinted with pride, shaking her head at him. ”i am sure many could stand in my glory. that will not make them me,” she told him matter of factly, tone quieted, still airy as her lips curled into a smile. it was not the first time a stallion had said something like that to her and her response was much the same. even with the guilt of her past weighing on her, adora valued herself in a way most wouldn’t. there was no mistaking the playful air about her even in the seriousness of her words, at least so she hoped.
”i will meet you in the middle if you wish. but i will warn you, once you venture into my world, i will find it hard to let you turn back.” if one thing was for certain, it was that this stallion had a way with words.
it felt like a challenge.
the baroness stepped away from him a few feet before stopping. she threw a look back at him, smirk wide against her pink maw. in a nonchalant roll off her tongue, she begged the question, ”who said i would even want to turn back?” there was mischief storming in her eyes, turning away from him and heading to the edge of the clearing.
