Her mouth tasted like blood.
Whether it was her own or that of the chestnut mare, it did not really matter. It was like acid on her tongue. I've felt like this before. The thought kept repeating in her mind, incessantly as she ran. It felt like she had been running for days. It had likely only been hours. Her legs and lungs burned and she was coated in a sheen of sweat and blood but she didn't stop. He's gone. The thought rang hollow. She spat and clenched her teeth. She could not let that thought run its course. Not until she had made it back. She could collapse all she wanted once she made it back. For now, it was her job to deliver the news. Solovey is dead.
The world didn't feel real. She could feel herself at the edges of an episode, the spiraling very very close. But she held on by the skin of her teeth, focusing on the burning in her muscles, the taste of iron on her tongue. Landscapes peeled past her, deserts and forests and fields. Was she lost? No, she didn't think so. This all looked familiar still. She was lucky she had explored much of these lands before, when she'd been looking for Coreion and Naberus. Her feet instinctually knew the way back home, even if her mind was focused on repeating the same thoughts over and over. I've felt like this before. It was loss. It was despair. It was rage. Angry tears had gathered in the corners of her eyes. She dared not think the next line of thoughts or she would lose it. She had to hold on, just an hour longer.
When she burst past the border of Rain Forest Beach, she thought her body would collapse right there. She had only run like this once before - when she'd been escaping from The Whorehouse. She had passed out from the exhaustion shortly after arriving in Lyrarcor. The next week she had felt as weak as a newborn foal, sore and shaky. It was likely she'd feel the same way after this. But that was a problem for later. Right now, she had news to announce.
Once she was well enough within the borders of her home, she let out a demanding call, halfway between a shout and a screech, unable to control her voice as well as she might have. Solovey's disappearance had baffled so many in these lands for so long and Seph had set out to find out what had happened. Eventually she had found a clue - slivers of crimson hair that had lead her all the way to the Outlands, where the Helkaer Brotherhood called home. Their Commander was a crimson mare and the most likely culprit. A suspicion that had proven true, much to Seph's despair. Sly had told Seph that Solovey was dead, murdered trying to protect someone else. Seph had not seen a body, but the announcement was enough. Sly had murdered a Light King. Typical Helkaer behavior, as Seph understood it. So now, Rain Forest Beach needed to know. Seph had followed the trail and that's where it had lead her. A tragic end.
