3. It's Alive!: You character has found a large, strange blue egg near the edge of the river. Before their eyes, it begins to hatch. It seems to believe that you are its mother now. What came from the egg? Would your character care for it?
trigger warning for foul language and violence/death.
what was it, exactly? down the river, nestled beneath a looming oak tree, colored as richly as the sky that was above her head. from where she stood, she could see it was an egg, but that didn't quell the utter disbelief she was feeling because of it. adora took in a few deep breaths. she was caught between walking away without a glance back, or approaching against her better nature. what if this was a gemstone of some sort? part of her hoped it was, because she thoughtlessly picked up a trot and headed straight for it without finishing her considerations.
she slowed as she drew in closer.
there was a heat emitting from the blue stone-like thing ahead of her, one that scorched the earth around it in a way she wouldn't have expected. anxiety rose within her throat, something telling her to turn back now - yet, she couldn't. adora was suddenly so engrossed in it's presence that there was no other concern greater than knowing. stopping less than 10 feet from it, the mare looked about the riverbed and then toward the skies. the oak tree had no nest, not that she truly thought this thing would've fit up there without breaking it. her heart was racing within her chest like a child who had just had sugar for the first time.
adora didn't make it the rest of the way because there was a gentle thrum coming from the egg. the crackling of the shell breaking it her sonars and the baroness was sent back a foot. every nerve of her body frayed and threatened to break, front feet almost lifting off the ground. as she readied to turn tail and run, the egg broke itself apart, and there lay a being of prehistoric time. the thing was as blue as it's shell, ombre'd into gray with an elongated maw and ... wings? adora gaped. the longer she looked, the more terribly confused she became. the creatures eyes opened and she startled when it's gaze met hers. with a ghastly hrumph, it toppled out of the remaining shell.
it croaked and whimpered. able to get a better look now that it stood on all fours, adora realized that it wasn't as big as she'd expected. something ( stupidity, probably ) beckoned her closer to it, head falling low as she sniffed around. equally as confused, the creature nosed in her direction, and a tug pulled at her chest. "where is your ... nest?" the golden mare ventured, allowing her muscles to settle some. there was no response, but it looked as concerned as she felt. "it must be here somewhere. you didn't just fall from the sky," she said, mostly to herself. or did it? her mind begged the question.
it was there that it hit here. this was no equine, and it wasn't a dinosaur. the wings had lead her to assume it was a malformed demon of sorts, but she had heard of these things from fairytales, much like the ones her mother told her when she was just a babe. so why then, she asked herself, was there a dragon egg laying in the open of wild equines?
her attention was pulled back to the youngling as it started moving toward her. the panic set back in, and adora snaked her neck and snapped her jaws in it's direction. with a yelp it hung back, belly to the ground in a show of submission. the regret of her fear came quickly after, trying as hard as she could to compose herself. "please, don't shy away - i'm sorry." in it's cowering, adora remembered it was just a child. motherless, and in a strange place. this time, as it came closer, the mare did not shy away. though her body wanted to contort in any way to avoid it's touch, it didn't. the dragon found it's way to her and pressed against her like a cat. "mama," it whispered, causing her gaze to snap down to it. "what?" she snapped, though her tone was quieted this time.
in the heat of the moment, judgement clouded by confusion, adora chose to take the creature with her. she needed to get away from the egg, scared of what might follow if she stayed too long. she considered leaving the child there, but the way he looked at her tugged at her heart strings. had it been a foal, a wolf pup, any other animal she wouldn't have thought twice. there was no signs of another dragon around. the creature was closely in tow the entire time she searched, and searched, and searched, until,
"mama," she heard from behind her. adora's ears flicked back, slowing her pace and turning to look at it. in a fleeting moment of bravery, she let it join her at her shoulder, reaching down to touch the scaliness of it's head. "come, child. we will return to the shores, i will seek rasa's audience for help in the morning." there were few horses she thought could help her, and though the underworld would probably be more equipped, she would take no chances with her life or that of the babe. so, adora trekked through the free lands and toward her home with the dragon at her side. her mind whirled with all the possibilities that could come of this; was this dragon brought here as part of the war? would she have someone to answer to for stealing it from it's resting place?
no matter where her mind lead, there was nothing but more questions. gods, her herd members were going to reel at the sight of her.
and they did. shamelessly, and just as confused or concerned as she was. as she found the pond of her home, adora motioned for the dragon to take a drink and turned to her guards to find winchester and salem, hoping that the black beast would be close enough to aid her with this situation. while she waited, adora found a quiet spot to nestle the child, settling him into the thicket and running her nose along his neck to lull him to sleep. it wasn't long until winchester found her, listened to her woes and gave her his honest advice. she was saddened. he was right, of course, at how dangerous this situation could become, something she would found out soon enough.
sleep had taken her with ease, laid beside the dragon as he curled himself under her chin and tucked into her chest. adora had chosen a place far from the herd, hopeful to keep attention to a minimum. as the early hours of the morning came, there was a drop in temperature that startled her awake. the ground beneath her body stirred, and a loud crackling could be heard for miles. the mare pealed herself away from the dragon to stand, blinking away the sleep from her eyes as a voice pierced her ears -
"oh, adora," the feminine tones said. she almost thought harlan had appeared in front of her until a spotted mare stepped from the shadows. "someone really ought to teach you to stay away from things that aren't yours. you target the dark lands, the helkaer ... now, this?" the other's eyes darted for the sleeping child, and adora stepped in her line of view. "who are you?" the golden mare interjected with a bite to her words. "my name is not important. just know that xerxes is far kind than i, and that is why i am here. make this easy on yourself and get the fuck out of my way."
the hairs on adora's neck stood, her lungs retracting as if out of air -
omen took a step closer -
from the thicket, the dragonling had awoken. stark still but eyes wide and trained on the palomino where she stood, blocking sight of the intruders.
"you will not take the boy," the golden mare said after a long pause, cerulean eyes blazing. adora was wracked with uncertainty, that would not stop her from protecting the innocent. "pacify her. she's getting on my nerves," the appaloosa hissed to the shadows, where two more figures appeared from seconds after. "let her die for the monstrosity if she wishes. he belongs to the underworld, i will see to it that the devil has his dragon." the finality of her words were sharp, and adora's fate was sealed. without a second thought, she lunged straight for omen as their guards dropped, attention on the dragon as he had gotten up and head for the mare he knew only as his mother.
ivories struck the fleshy muscle of the demons throat, a low growl erupting from the depths of omen's chest. she shook her body with mighty force, throwing the mortal mare off of her and to the ground. omen laughed. the sound shook the shores and adora could hear the shuffling of hoofbeats that were sounding in the distance now. "NO!" she was screaming. "DO NOT COME. take the herd to safety." adora hoped that they could hear her, that someone was close enough to head the warning before it was too late. the demoness was grinning ear to ear, as if she had already won. "i really did want this to be as painless as possible, adora, you'll have to forgive me. you just don't know when to quit." and she was right. hindsight was 20/20.
the dragon had charged toward the others, a throaty screech stopping them in their tracks. in the heat of the moment, they couldn't believe their eyes. he had sucked in a breath and exhaled, fire spewing from his scaly maw and in their direction. young and with no idea how to use his own weight, it was nothing spectacular, but enough to send forceful sparks of heat straight into their faces.
omen forced adora to her feet by the hair of her poll, but not without resistance. the spotted mare was not expecting to be met with fire to the throat, dropping the other and heading backward. "you little mongrel," she spat, front legs hitting the ground with a thunderous rage that unsteadied all of them. that rage was immediately redirected to the palomino, who had turned to try and make a break for the dragon. omen's body collided with hers from the hip, and the two of them went flying in opposite directions. the baroness hit the ground head first. there was a low vibration coming from the dragon, and adora could see the way the other mare's eyes lit up with fear, much like her own when she had first crossed paths with the child.
in and out, to and fro, did adora's consciousness waver. she could smell burning flesh and see the amber firelight that was consuming her home. everything around her was warm as could be though she was still cold laying against the hard ground. the taste of iron pooled in her mouth, and adora tried to open her eyes to see what was happening, met with muted colors and blurred out faces. she heard her name and attempted to say something, but there was no strength left. she wanted to scream for her guard, who had clearly heard her warning. she wanted to be curled up into her thicket with the babe in her arms where she had been a mere hour ago, where the world was right. as things happened around her, the less aware she became. adora wished she had never left home that day.
omen's voice crept through the disorientation and this time it was far less crass. "leave her. let us get it to the underworld before it wakes." she felt something brush passed her forelock, this time keeping her eyes closed, admitting defeat as the life left her.
her eyes opened again a time later where she lay someplace she had never seen. adora's body felt weightless, and there was no pain where she had most expected it. the meadow had just seen rain, and overhead there was a brilliant show of colors smiling down at her. the rainbow was comforting, the realization that she was dead ... was not. in the sunlight with the rays beaming across her face, adora's mind wandered.
quietly, she said;
"as the ocean sings,
i am reminded of home.
