He felt the most comfortable in the dark. There was something peaceful about the bright moonlight slicing through the shadows that swirled about, as if the two were battling for dominance. Tonight, the ruby stallion's mind was quieted, and for that he was thankful. Perhaps that had something to do with the heat he could feel coming off these pools, or maybe it just happened to be one of those nights. He never knew how long these.. peaceful feelings would last, though he hoped it was longer than last time.
The night was cool enough that he could tell snow was in going to fall in the near future. While he disliked the snow greatly, his unnervingly calm mood was unchanged. He was not used to feeling anything that was not a negative emotion, and he wasn't entirely sure what to do about it. It made him uncomfortable.
Sniffing the water at his feet carefully, Kladdan slowly waded in and his hooves sunk slowly into the soft sand. His violet eyes took in his surroundings, noting the lack of visibility through the trees behind him. The breeze was light, but he was confident he would be able to scent someone nearby. The moon was nearly full and the light it cast illuminated several other pools in the vicinity that were empty. Good. He liked it that way. Glancing at the stars, he hummed a little to himself. When was the last time he was able to relax and enjoy the night sky? He couldn't remember. The stars were by far his favorite thing, and he liked to imagine what those different worlds look like. Were they like his soul? Cold and lifeless? Were they green and bright? Were they full of magical creatures beyond his imagination?
He surprised himself by chuckling at that last thought, and abruptly stopped. He thought he heard some twigs snapping, and his ears flicked back in irritation. Who had the bright idea to ruin this quiet night for him? He swung his head towards the sound, eyes narrowing. "Is there something I could help you with?

Do you walk in the valley of kings? Do you walk in the shadow of men Who sold their lives to a dream? Do you ponder the manner of things In the dark?
Tw: Language
She had come to see him. It still baffled him as to why, even if they had had a whole tense and awkward conversation about it. She had come to see him. Nixi, Queen of the Light Kingdom from which he and all associated with the Sisterhood had been banned from, had come to see him, Xovad aka Valfrid, the heir to the current High Priestess. It made no sense and now Xovad was even more confused than before, his feelings all twisted up and his heart broken all the more. He wanted her, he loved her, and it hurt. How did they move on, be it together or apart, and how did they live knowing the other was hurting? Clearly, neither of them were any good at this moving on bullshit. And now he was back to hardly being able to sleep, feeling pent up and frustrated, not knowing what to do with his life. And now was really not the time to be second guessing his duties as heir! Not when his mother was thinking of retiring soon... Not that she'd said that to him, but he could sense it in the way she was having him handle more and more of her Versai duties. Hell, that was how he'd run into Nixi in the first place - taking over his mother's time watching guard of Mersa.
A moonlit stroll was just what he needed to clear his head, so he'd headed out from Lyrarcor and the Highlands out toward the Free Lands. It was goddamn freezing out but due to living in the mountains, his winter coat tended to grow in thick so at least he had that going for him... Kept the worst of winter's cold bite away from him, anyway. He sighed heavily as he walked, his breath becoming visible before his nares as it was expelled from his body. His red eyes were cast toward the stars above. The sky was clear tonight, the moon nearly full but still not quite there. And it was quiet tonight. Back home, snow covered the terrain but it seemed Crystal Pools had been spared the snowfall. For now, anyway.
Xovad didn't pay very much attention to where he was going, not caring if there was anyone around that might catch him star gazing. He was only looking around enough to not stumbled into one of the many pools that made up this section of the Free Lands, giving it its name. He was on the outskirts of the pools, mostly, still near enough the tree line that a couple of twigs would occasionally snap beneath the weight of his large hooves. It was after one such step that he heard the voice of another equine. "Is there something I could help you with?" Xovad halted abruptly with a quiet snort, nostrils flaring to draw in the scent of the other stallion. It was no one he recognized, nor did the stench of sulfur cling to his aura like it would someone from the Underworld.
"Not unless you know the cure to heartbreak," came his reply without him even thinking it over. The words kind of just... fell out of him. He regretted it immediately, ears tilting back in annoyance (at himself, of course, not toward the stranger). "Uh, pretend I didn't say that..." He let out an awkward chuckle and shook his head. "Sorry. Didn't mean to disturb you. Didn't even know you were there... was too busy looking at the stars."

His peace was never allowed to last forever. His mind made sure of that. Lately, his new hallucinations had made his sanity become a fragile thing, hanging on by a fraying thread. It was ready to snap at any moment, but tonight they weren't haunting him. Perhaps it was the cool breeze or all those stars, but something was keeping his mind intact and for that, he was thankful. Usually the quiet made his mind race more but apparently that wasn't the case tonight. It appeared that fate had finally decided to take it easy on him. For once.
He had settled into the water nearly to his belly, allowing he heat to soothe his aching muscles and his tight scars along his body. He could feel not only physical, but mental pain ebbing from his bones, and felt himself slowly settling into his skin. It was the type of peace he found himself dreaming on, and maybe that was why he was suddenly so angry that he had been interrupted. The other stallion was built slightly bigger than Kladdan was, and smelled of heavy snow. It didn't surprise the bay stag that someone would come from the cold to seek refuge from the harsh winter, but he wished that this stranger had found his solace somewhere else.
At Kladdan's harsh greeting, the response from the gold and white stallion seemed to erupt from him without a thought. "Not unless you know the cure to heartbreak." Ah, a heartbroken male just trying to put the pieces back together. A tiny bit of sympathy swept through him for the red-eyed stag. Before Kladdan could even think of what to say to pacify him and send the stranger on his way, he noted flick of the other's ears and sheepish response. "Uh, pretend I didn't say that... Sorry. Didn't mean to disturb you. Didn't even know you were there... was too busy looking at the stars." The forced chuckle made Kladdan soft just a little. Poor guy clearly needed someone to talk to. He managed to find the expert in getting his heart broken - though not the one who could cure it.
Keenly aware of the disadvantage of being partially submerged, the red beast eased his way out of the pool as he spoke, violet eyes remaining on the other stallion. "Consider it forgotten, though I am sorry to hear you had your heart broken. Unfortunately, that is more common than it should be." He stopped at the edge of the water, encouraging the other to come out of the cover of the trees. "There is no need to apologize, I was also enjoying the night sky. He glanced up, the stars bright and unchanging. "I like to imagine what it would be like to live on one of those stars, away from a world filled with heartache and death."
Kladdan had no idea why he said that. He didn't like looking weak in front of others, and definitely didn't like talking about any feelings he may have. He cleared his throat, depths returning to the dual painted beast. "Do you... want to talk about it?" That was a normal response, right? Talk to others about your problems to get another perspective to work out your feelings? Kladdan personally never did that, but Fiore had used him as a sounding board more times than the stallion could count, and it appeared to have helped her work through her problems. Until it didn't.
He shut those thoughts down, not wanting to think about his first love after he had been turned into what he is now, and his twin girls that had gone missing with her. No, tonight was not about his problems. He didn't want to talk about the faces that haunted his dreams and the life he could have had. This was Kladdan's new life, he didn't need any of them.

Do you walk in the valley of kings? Do you walk in the shadow of men Who sold their lives to a dream? Do you ponder the manner of things In the dark?
Xovad was still young. He knew he very well may meet someone else in his life to fall in love with - but no one was ever quite the same as your first love. And before that, they had been friends. Best friends. They confided in each other about everything. At once point, Nixi had known him better than anyone else. Now... now, they were all grown up, and vastly different than when they were kids. They had been raised to lead different lives, she a royal princess and he the heir to a Vesai position. It hadn't mattered much to them when they were kids but... now she was Queen, and he was a Seer as well as an heir to his mother's position and just... there was so much. In order to be together, one of them was going to have to give it all up. Everything they had worked so hard for their entire lives, gone, just for the sake of love. Neither of them wanted to give up their whole lives, their entire identity, and Xovad would never ask her to, either - even if he had often dreamed of asking the Queen to run away with him. That would involve abandoning her Kingdom and Xovad knew she would never do that. Not for him or anyone else. It hurt, yes, but she was the Queen. It was to be expected.
Which led him to wonder... what side was this stranger on? Light, Dark, somewhere in between? Where did he fall on the alliance spectrum? Xovad was considered a Light extremist - all about purification and peace (even if he had to dish out a bit of violence in order to get that peace). Did that make him evil? Cruel? Ask anyone who knew him, truly knew him, and they would tell you he wasn't a bad guy. He hoped even Nixi would say he wasn't a bad guy. Misunderstood, perhaps, but not bad. Not evil. And certainly not cruel. Shifting his weight, more twigs snapping beneath his hooves, Xovad sighed heavily and watched as the stranger emerged from the pool of water he'd been soaking in. The light of the moon shone upon a multitude of scars, especially across the bay's chest and down his front legs. Perhaps a warrior. Or maybe just someone who liked to pick a fight. The red-eyed Seer studied the scars for a moment before lifting his gaze to meet that of the stranger.
"Consider it forgotten, though I am sorry to hear you had your heart broken. Unfortunately, that is more common than it should be." A snorted out laugh, bitter but understanding. "Nah, it's fine... Could be worse." But it could also be better. He and Nixi could be so happy together. He knew it. Instead, he was doomed to be miserable without her. Oh, well. He had other things to keep his mind occupied. Like talking to strangers on cold winter nights when he should be sleeping. "There is no need to apologize, I was also enjoying the night sky." The stranger looked up at the sky and Xovad found himself following suit, red eyes finding the various patterns in the sky. He wished he could make sense of them. "I like to imagine what it would be like to live on one of those stars, away from a world filled with heartache and death." A moment of quiet contemplation followed the words. Xovad did not say anything, giving only a soft and thoughtful hmm as his ears twitched, listening to the still and silent world around them.
Hearing the stranger clear his throat, the young brute looked away from the sky and back at the other man, blinking at him upon being asked the unexpected question. "Do you... want to talk about it?" In all honesty? Yeah, he wanted to talk about it, but dare he spill his deepest thoughts to a total stranger? He could be a spy. He could bring the information to the Helkaer or the Underworld! "Best not," he said with another awkward chuckle, shifting his gaze to look at the still surface of the pool the brute had emerged from. Realizing how far away he was, he began to talk a few steps closer, though there was a cautiousness to his movements. Not fear, no, but clearly he was the type that was wary of strangers. In his position, he had to be.

The ruby beast didn't miss the slightly taller male's gaze lingering on his scars. He was rarely ever in a story telling mood, and boy did those marks have stories. Kladdan could remember each and every time he received one. Most of the scars he carried were not visible to the eye, and that was honestly worse than openly advertising his failures. Because that's what they were - failures of his past. They were a mocking reminder of what he once was, and who he has now become. Doomed to be alone. Destined for nothing and nobody. He was so different than who he used to be, he was sure not even Fiore or Devil would recognize him. Those two vixen had gotten under his skin too many different ways to count, and while they most likely have forgotten him, he would never forget their faces. They were just two of those inner wounds that would never heal. At this point, he wasn't even sure if he wanted to be healed. He deserved to be like this.
He was pulled from his thoughts at the dry chuckle that pulled from the red eyed stag. "Nah, it's fine... Could be worse." Kladdan could almost here the rest of that line of thinking that was left unsaid. Could be worse, but also could be better. The "better" was the type of thinking that kept someone up at night. Or wandering under the stars and accidentally running into strange stallions in the dead of the night.
The silence that filled the night breeze as both stallions looked toward the heavens felt a little too close to companionship for Kladdan's liking. As per usual, he had to break the comfortable quiet that had began to settle on his skin. Honestly, his invitation for the other stallion to open up was not normal for Kladdan to offer. Especially not to strangers. Perhaps those feeling of peace earlier were starting to cloud his judgement. Violet eyes met red ones as the soft words and another chuckle filtered between them. "Best not." Kladdan could understand not wanting to share obviously painful thoughts with someone he didn't know, but sometimes airing out dirty laundry was good for the soul. Get it all out in the air until you go back to pretending that they never existed in the first place.
He watched the stag come closer warily and was not offended. The red stallion remained where he was and tilted his crown in curiosity. "I am Kladdan, by the way," he said with a lopsided smile that almost reached his eyes. "If there is one thing I am good at, it is keeping my mouth shut. Should you want me to." Kladdan left it at that, not wanting to push the stranger nor feeling the need to convince him to open up. He knew better than to push matters of the heart.
Turning to look back at the warm pools behind him, Kladdan glanced at the other beast. "I find that the waters here not only soothe my body, but my mind," he mused absently. "Perhaps a good soak would help you as well."

Xovad knew that he could not trust this random stranger, but the temptation to just vent about his troubles was still there. He wanted an outside point of view, but being that he was associated with the Versa, and Nixi with the Light Kingdom as the Queen, it simply just wasn’t safe to do so to a stranger. Perhaps to anyone. If word got out to the wrong horse that Xovad and Nixi had feelings for one another it would absolutely be used against them. Xovad knew that the Queen was his biggest weakness. He would do whatever he could to keep her safe and happy. He just wanted her to have a good life. A peaceful life. However, in their positions of power, peace was never truly an option. They were going to be stuck in a cycle of chaos for the rest of their lives. It was their fate. Their destiny. Xovad knew it, had always known it, but that didn’t make it any less upsetting to think about.
A silence settled between himself and the other stallion and though it wasn’t entirely uncomfortable, it still made Xovad’s skin feel like it was crawling. He sighed, soft and sad, and glanced up at the sky once more. What must it be like, to live amongst the stars? Would he ever know true peace in his lifetime? Would there ever be someone who could fill the cracks in his heart, in his life, that Nixi had once filled? Doubtful. There was simply no one like her. There would never be anyone else like her. She was his one and only, he was convinced of it. It was pure bad luck that they couldn’t be together because they could have been great together. They could have been… should have been… but never would be.
"I am Kladdan, by the way," The stallion introduced himself after a beat of silence and Xovad looked over at him, seeing the grin, the way it almost but not quite reached his eyes. ”I am Valfrid.” Would Kladdan recognize his name at all? Xovad wasn’t sure. He had started to make a name for himself, but mainly anyone that knew his mother, or knew of her, knew at least his alias. "If there is one thing I am good at, it is keeping my mouth shut. Should you want me to." Such a tempting offer, truly it was, but Xovad knew the dangers. ”I wish I could. Trust me. But it’s best to just keep my mouth shut.” He gave a half hearted little shrug, a crooked smile on his lips. Hs meant no offense to Kladdan so hopefully he didn’t get offended by it.
"I find that the waters here not only soothe my body, but my mind, Perhaps a good soak would help you as well." Kladdan spoke, looking at the pools behind him, and Xovad’s red eyes followed. He knew the water would also slow him down but… he figured he would still be quick enough to defend himself if he had to. ”Not a bad idea,” he mused, giving another shrug before he started toward the nearest pool. He lowered his muzzle toward the water, sniffing at it casually while keeping an ear turned back toward Kladdan, as well as keeping half an eye on him.

Kladdan could almost feel the pain coming off the brightly colored stallion and while that large part of him still wished to be alone, that nagging curiosity wanted him to air itself out. He wouldn't push the stranger, but secretly hoped that if he was going to interrupt his peaceful night, he would share those secrets. Was that too much to ask? Probably. His wandering thoughts were interrupted by the other beast introducing himself - I am Valfrid. A name that was unfamiliar, but the knight hadn't been in these lands long. He had only met two others and neither of them were the kind to give a list of names for Kladdan to learn.
As he uncharacteristically offered for Valfrid to air his dirty laundry, the beast wasn't surprised that the taller male opted to not disclose anything. Kladdan returned his shrug with one of his own. Suite yourself. The offer doesn't expire. It was fair, considering he would just have to trust the ruby creature's word that he would keep things to himself. Kladdan would - he had no reason not to. For now. Who would he even tell? The little jackal that followed him around like a puppy? Hyde could care less what gossip the equine found in his wanderings.
Both stallions look at the warm, nearly healing waters of the pools that surrounded them. What the scarred beast said might have sounded cheesy, but it was the truth. He felt nearly like his old self in here - friendly, thoughtful... kind. It was strange, and for a moment, Kladdan wondered if there was something mystical about the pools. He doubted it, but the childish thought brought a ghost of a smile across his lips for a heartbeat. Not a bad idea. Valfrid's words brought the knight back to the present, violet gaze shifting to watch the palomino move to a nearby pool.
The sudden urge to share his own pain begged Kladdan to open up, and he was surprised by the feeling. He never opened up, except for pushing the envelope with Samson back in those dreaded swamps. Perhaps it was that peaceful feeling of the night affecting him, or the thought of another being possibly knowing how he felt. He turned in the water to see the paint better, looking back up to the smattering of stars that winked at the pair. I do wish there was a cure for heart break. If there was, his depths turned back to Valfrid. I think I would be a much better man.

x XOVAD Xovad was determined to be the greatest Versai Brother he could be, when his time came - and it was coming soon. Springtime was just around the corner, even if it didn't feel like it this wintery evening (at least, outside of the warm steam of Crystal Pools, anyway). Especially in the Highlands, where the crisp winter chill would last into usually the middle of spring, and the lake in Lyrarcor would not nearly be warm enough for a pleasant swim until summer was well on its way! Still, the gold and ivory brute would not change his home for the world, for anything - except, maybe, maybe, for a chance to remain at Nixi's side. Forever, just the two of them against the world. Well, and her kids, of course. He wouldn't dare try to take her away from them. What a bastard he would be for doing something like that. I wonder if Kladdan has ever heard of me. Or of the Versai, at least. Should I mention it? The though twas abrupt but brief and in the end, the heir decided not to say anything at all. Suite yourself. The offer doesn't expire. An unusually thing to say to a stranger, who you'd most likely never see again. Unless Kladdan was going to make it a point to seek him out again at some point. Xovad wasn't exactly planning to go searching far and wide to spill his secrets to Kladdan (or anyone) in the future. He'd had his heart broken by romantic feelings already, no need to add platonic pain overtop of it. He chuckled, soft and quiet but polite and understanding as well. "Thank you, Kladdan. I will remember that." Spilling secrets or not, it was nice to know he potentially had someone to at least, ya know, talk to about things. Even just simple things. Water sloshed around Xovad's sturdy limbs as he moved through the pool he'd decided to enter, letting a drawn out sigh escape his nares. Even in his relaxed state, he kept one ear turned toward Kladdan, as well as at least the corner of his eye on him. Always watching, always suspicious. One could never be sure in this world who exactly they were talking to. I do wish there was a cure for heart break. If there was, With just the stars at the witness to Kladdan's words, it felt like he was possibly admitting some huge secret. Xovad was intrigued. I think I would be a much better man. Did he consider himself to be a bad man? If so, why? Letting the silence move between them for a beat as he mulled over the tidbit of information, Xovad then turned his head to fully look at Kladdan. "Why do you think you need to be a better man?" he asked, curious but trying not to be too prodding. "You don't seem half bad to me." illɘgal w/ Kladdan 487 | Xovad / ValfridI really enjoy the dynamic of this thread! 5 years 4 months, winter, evening, after Nixi's visit to Mersa, before the Versai meeting

The maroon stallion didn't actually expect Valfrid to accept his offer any time soon - most likely ever - to have a confidante, but it honestly felt good to offer. It was a glimpse to what he used to be, something the beast had almost forgotten ever existed. Thank you, Kladdan. I will remember that. Would he though? Honestly, Kladdan wouldn't be surprised if they never saw each other again. Not because he wouldn't want to, purely because he could already tell that these lands were extensive. He could only imagine how many other equines lived here, and who knows what the chances were that they would run into each other again.
Kladdan didn't miss Valfrid still remaining wary as he settled into his own pool, another half smile trying to tug at his scarred lips. The moment of faint amusement dissipated at his confession, feeling his words settle into silence between the unusual pair. He didn't mind and hadn't expected a response, and watched Valfrid shift to be able to see him better with curiosity in his voice. Why do you think you need to be a better man? You don't seem half bad to me. The ruby beast almost laughed, but instead a grimace crossed his features. His companion had managed to catch him on a good night, for this attitude and friendliness was not typical.
The stallion mulled over Valfrid's words for a few moments, taking the chance to shift in the pool and try and gather not. He debated responding the same way as the golden beast had - neutrally. But, his mind had other plans tonight. He wasn't quite sure how to express his thoughts, but attempted to anyway. I appreciate that, but there are many things I've done that I wish I could take back. All because I had fallen in love and cared about the wrong people, he started slowly and nearly void of emotion. The heartbreak itself set off a chain of events that I wish I could take back. Thanks to that guilt, I often find myself not recognizing who I've become. Violet eyes shifted away from Valfrid, uncomfortable. I'm not really sure who I am any more, to be honest.

Heartbreak had changed him, but Xovad liked to think it had changed him for the better. Loving Nixi made him want to better himself and make a better name for the Versai when his time came to rise as a Brother. The Light Queen was his first love, his true love, so far his only love. He wanted to be the best man he could be and more importantly, gain her trust back. In his mind, there was still hope for them. There was still hope for a romance between them, for their love to grow and be pure and true. Perhaps he was living in a fairytale but he just couldn't stop thinking about her, about how much she meant to him. The way she laughed, the sound of her voice, her scent - sweet, with a hint of salty sea air. Gods, how he missed pressing his muzzle to her nape and breathing in the scent of her... Perhaps one day, they could have they closeness again. He would not give up hope, not unless she gave him reason to.
Did Kladdan have a story like that? Though it sounded like the other brute had given up completely on the idea of love and have given himself up entirely to the heartbreak. That was sad. Xovad knew the pain was brutal but... was it worth giving up who you were? For a moment, Xovad's question was met by silence, which he respected. Maybe it was a topic that Kladdan would rather avoid and not further delve into it. Everyone had their secrets. Even Xovad had some, things he'd never told anyone (aside from Nixi, that is). I appreciate that, but there are many things I've done that I wish I could take back. All because I had fallen in love and cared about the wrong people, At last, Kladdan spoke and Xovad's ears twitched upon hearing the explanation. What sort of things had this man done? Murder? Kidnapping? Assault? He'd promised Nixi he wouldn't be quick to judge, however, so he dared not voice his concerns. Instead, he listened.
The heartbreak itself set off a chain of events that I wish I could take back. Thanks to that guilt, I often find myself not recognizing who I've become. Kladdan turned his face away from Xovad, a display of discomfort, and the Versai heir sighed softly. He could understand what Kladdan was saying. I'm not really sure who I am any more, to be honest. Xovad looked up at the sky, at the stars and the moon. "It's never too late to find yourself, Kladdan. There's always a way to make things better. It's unfortunately usually the hard way, but there is a way." He hoped his words would offer some comfort to Kladdan this evening, even if just for the moment.
