Regina had always sought comfort in the Freelands. They had been her home prior to meeting family members and joining Sunset Shores, and after that following Solovey to Rain Forest Beach. Of course, since the war had broken out the Freelands had become a place of war. No horse could wander there unintentionally; anybody seeking shelter would have to go to an unaffiliated herdland – and good luck finding one of those! – or seek a place with the Vigilum. Regina had no such intentions in mind for the day. No, today she was furiously frustrated. Solovey remained missing, and the war appeared to be in a deadlock. The pretty gold cream champagne felt isolated from it all, and completely powerless.
That’s what brought her out today. She didn’t want to take her attitude out on herd members, and she didn’t want to just say at home being useless. No, today would be about action. If she went to the Freelands, perhaps she could learn or do something valuable. Anything was more valuable than doing nothing, and nothing was all Regina had accomplished so far. Snorting in tandem with her hoofbeats and frustration, the tall mare left Rain Forest Beach, nodding solemnly to the guards as she did so. Let them think she left on the business of Utopia. Her affiliation was known within the herd, she trusted. It wasn’t as though she had made a secret of it to any who had asked, and she looked so strongly of the Light alliance that it shouldn’t be a surprise.
Her frustration brought her to Nomalanga, the mist-covered forest enshrouded by foliage and beset by sound. Snorting, the mare halted, sniffing the air delicately and enjoying the feel of the mist on her back. It was hard to see, which was great – she’d rather listen, and see what she could learn. Prowling forward, the Light mare’s dark teal eyes sought the forms of others in the mist, eager to engage in conversation and learn what she could of what was going on. Had Utopia won yet? Were there more shocks reverberating across the land because of this war? What else could she learn? What could she do? Beset by eagerness, the mare wandered, ears keen, eyes searching for the form of another. There was a horse in front of her, the first she had seen. Regina halted, wondering if the other had noticed her and would approach, or was keen to ignore her and continue with their day. What they did would tell her a lot of who she was about to engage with, and that could be valuable information.

Per usual, the wraith was growing restless. Things had been feeling quiet lately and it was beginning to drive her mad. Not as much as her endless hunger for flesh, but enough that she rarely found herself staying within the borders of Sinheim. Now that autumn was in full force, the constant wind that blew across the desolate landscape was becoming more and more harsh. While it didn't actually bother the mare, she found herself waking up early in the morning and leaving anyway. A heavy fog hung in the air, clinging to her sooty pelt and leaving her uncomfortably damp as she approached her borders. Remembering a land where she had met the savage dark queen, her painted legs worked to take her towards Nomalanga without looking back. The trek to the jungle wasn't a long one, but it allowed the Helkaer to get lost in her thoughts. Her children rarely allowed her any time to herself and lately her time had been consumed with hunting for information. Cambions aligning themselves to the wrong side, future plans for the dark kingdom, Xerxes's assignment. It was... nice to be useful. There was joy in the chaos. Better than sitting at home and pretending to be a mother, that's for sure. As she progressed through the undergrowth, magenta eyes scanned the misted forest for any signs of life. Though it was a bit further into the day than the last time she was here, the expected buzz of wildlife was only a whisper. Her hoof beats were muted in the soft, muddy vegetation, which Harlan hoped would allow her to sneak up on any prey that she might find. It didn't really matter how much the Helkaer ate, she was always ready to consume more. She hoped this morning would result in a good hunt. Raising her muzzle to take a deep breath, the mare was disappointed that all she could smell was the humidity in the air. Perhaps this wasn't the right place to find a morning meal. A sign pushed through her nares and she began to turn towards home when a different scent reached her. Not game, but equine. Her crown whipped back around and she slowly scanned the trees for movement. She saw a gold and white body as it apparently had seen her, the form coming to a halt. The private stayed where she was for a few moments then slowly stepped over pieces of rotted logs towards the splashed mare. Harlan kept her expression neutral as she took in the taller fem in front of her. Slightly heavier build, sparkling jewelry, starting eyes against her light coat. There was something about her that seemed familiar, but a name didn't rise to the forefront of Harlan's mind. She cocked her head in curiosity, magenta eyes locking onto teal ones. Dangerous time to be out in the middle of nowhere by yourself. I'm sure there's someone at home who would be disappointed if something happened to you. The threat was light but still apparent in her words. Maybe things would finally get interesting around here. TAG Sunfrost and Regina! What horse had red eyes? That was the main thought in Regina’s mind as the stranger approached. The stranger was shorter than her, but prowled with a dangerous ease that immediately put the Light mare on alert. Who exactly was she about to tangle with here? The mare challenged her, neighing that it was dangerous to be out in the middle of nowhere, and someone at home would surely be disappointed if something happened to Regina out here. Was that a threat? What horse approached another immediately with some threat? What the heck was up with that? Nostrils flaring, Regina backed up a step, putting some distance between this mare and herself, wanting nothing to do with proximity where this one was concerned.
As she backed up a step, Regina’s teal eyes ran over the mare’s form, trying to learn what she could. They widened slightly as they caught on a brand, visible on the mare’s left side at the base of her neck, only just hidden until she had drawn closer. This mare was Helkaer! How in the world was Regina’s luck so bad that she had run into a Helkaer out here in the Freelands? And no wonder the mare was so aggressive and threatening. That was practically the Helkaer’s playbook. Is that a threat, Helkaer? Regina bit out, unable to stop herself, choosing to channel fear into aggression. The Helkaer certainly wouldn’t respect fear, but knowing her luck, Regina bet the mare would feed right off of aggression. And Regina was no fighter! Sure, she was tall, and her draft heritage gave her some muscle and fortitude, but actual fighting? She would have to go off instinct alone if this escalated to that, whereas Regina knew the Helkaer mare would no doubt have had training and would be more tactical in her approach.
But was it even possible to de-escalate this? I’m searching for someone she confessed, suddenly. Maybe if she backed things up, the situation could calm. And I’m not going to stay at home, scared of what’s out there, instead of looking for him. What are you doing here? This is far from the Outlands. No doubt the Helkaer was out causing trouble, and Regina couldn’t help the bite in her voice as she asked what the mare was doing out here, but she also wondered if perhaps they could keep this to civil conversation. It was unlikely, but maybe, just maybe, things could remain calm.

A smirk threatened to overtake the neutral expression that the wraith so carefully put into place as the painted mare in front of her started to back away. Those teal eyes roamed the Helkaer's pelt as she crept closer, honing in on the brand nestled into her flesh. Harlan rarely found a reason to hide who she was, and a wide, dangerous grin finally erupted across her pretty facade as the mare made the connection. Is that a threat, Helkaer? The private didn't even try to hold back the low chuckle that snaked through her lips at the challenging words. Would it concern you if it was? Though the stranger was overall larger than the dappled vixen, she felt no fear of a potential fight. Sometimes smaller was better - typically resulting in being faster than the opponent. It would be interesting to see how this bejeweled stranger would fight. Would she use that extra weight and size to her advantage? Did she even have any experience fighting? The need for blood and flesh hadn't dissipated yet, and perhaps this two-toned fem would be her first real victim. The Helkaer continued to stalk forward, even as the stranger continued to speak. I’m searching for someone. Interesting - searching for someone in a time of war in this unpleasant jungle. Were they a victim of the war? A captive? An important figurehead? Any of the possibilities made the Helkaer more and more suspicious of the other mare. And I’m not going to stay at home, scared of what’s out there, instead of looking for him. What are you doing here? This is far from the Outlands. No, instead the fem was going to go out by herself looking for whoever she had lost. Not only that, but trying to give someone of the Brotherhood attitude? She may view herself as brave, but Harlan thought she was incredibly stupid. Harlan began to slowly circle the mare, magenta eyes running over every inch of her bodice. You know, I may be able to... assist you in your search, The Helkaer's tone was conversational as she walked. I am looking for those who have chosen to align with Utopia. Out of curiosity, of course. A smirk crossed her lips. The Outlands lacks their supporters, as you can imagine. Why would you be out here all alone? Does nobody else care about your missing person? Would anyone notice if you went missing as well? The private stopped her circling in front of the mare, a few feet away. Would you like to find out?000000 TAG Sunfrost and Regina! Regina was simultaneously unsurprised yet thoroughly perturbed by the Helkaer’s response. Would it concern you if it was? There was no good answer to that question. Either she said yes and got treated as a coward, or she said no and insulted the Helkaer in front of her. Either option took this conversation straight into a fight. Was Regina ready for a fight? Could she fight to defend herself and what she believed in? Trying to distract herself from those dark thoughts, and calm this conversation from the heights it was simmering to, Regina explained how she was out searching for someone. She tried to turn the question back around, asking the Helkaer what she was doing lurking in the Freelands. The mare circled like a predator, completely unconcerned with Regina’s queries. Regina tracked her, wariness competing with rising fear as the circling continued. The Helkaer “offered assistance”, but then revealed she was looking for supporters of Utopia. Regina’s blood chilled as the mare smirked at her, as though seeing right through her to the alliance and allegiance she claimed.
Each of the Helkaer’s questions chilled Regina to the bone. She barely repressed a shiver as the Helkaer stopped her circling at long last, leaving her last question hanging in the breeze. Would you like to find out? The immediate answer Regina had was along the lines of Hell the fuck no, but something else competed with her immediate instinct of flight over fight. It was the need to prove herself to be more than she thought she was. Every time she’d come into contact with a situation that threatened her safety, she’d run away and gotten others to help. That was what had happened before, with that mare in the Outlands a few days ago. That was what would happen again, unless Regina decided to stand for what she believed in instead of running away and awaiting rescue. To stay would take courage she’d so far lacked. The ensuing battle – for it was nothing short of inevitable at this point – would end badly given Regina had absolutely no battle experience. Regardless of all those things, Regina decided that she would stand and fight. It was for the first time, and perhaps the last time if this Helkaer mare killed her, but she wasn’t going to run. Hell, she was going to start this battle.
With a snarl twisting her lips, Regina lunged forward. The Helkaer mare was directly in front of her and no more than a few feet away. Regina would take advantage of that. Hoping her sudden attack and her speed would be enough, Regina snaked her head downwards as she approached, hoping to latch her teeth in whatever part of her enemy she could reach. She was taller than her opponent, and Regina instinctually knew she needed to take advantage of that height. Therefore, her teeth lunged towards the Helkaer’s head. It would be ideal if her teeth could find purchase on one of the Helkaer’s ears, which could give her some leverage on the rest of the mare’s body and concurrently threaten permanent damage. If not, Regina would be more than happy to sink her teeth into the mare’s neck or into the sensitive skin along her mane instead.

As the wraith settled in front of the stranger, the smirk on her lips warped into a sharp-edged grin. Her last question seemed to cause a shift in the atmosphere that tasted simply divine. The quiet hum of the wilderness around the pair felt as if it had suddenly stopped as the Helkaer's attention was wholly focused on the painted mare before her. The anticipation was almost palpable. The feeling made the private’s blood race through her veins. She had been craving a fight since her meeting with the Dark Queen and today might finally be the day that she could spill another’s blood. If a fight ended up in death, perhaps she would even get the chance to finally taste the flesh of another equine instead of various small game. Harlan almost had another taunting question formulated when the painted mare’s face twisted and rushed forward. The Helkaer’s magenta eyes widened a touch, the only indication that she was caught off guard at the sudden attack. She dropped her head a few inches, jerking it to the left to avoid the fem’s jaws. The mare’s breath tickled her ears, but Harlan sucked in a sharp breath as teeth sank into her crest and tore at the flesh and hair there. The pain and feeling of blood beginning to seep down her neck made Harlan’s rage quickly rise to the surface. She was furious that this stranger drew first blood but was determined to be the last to do so. The injury burned in the cool, damp air, and deep down, she hoped it would scar. Harlan had always been vain and took pride in her appearance, but perhaps it was time for her to start building a savage reputation like the Commander and General had. Scars could be more intimidating than mere words and kidnappings. Harlan shifted her bodice to the left, hoping to make the larger mare have to turn to attack her head-on again. With a growl dripping from her lips, she reached back towards the underside of the mare’s jaw. She would love to rip open that sensitive, fleshy part of the fem’s face between her chin and jawbone. Though the thought of ripping open her lower lip sounded wonderfully delicious. If the stranger was ever able to locate her missing compatriot, would they even want her back if her face was ripped open? Harlan would be delighted if she could ruin the beautiful face in front of her. TAG Sunfrost and Regina! Would she succeed? Would she fail? Regina only knew rage as she lunged forward, teeth missing their mark on the Helkaer’s ears but sinking into the crest of the mare’s neck. The Light mare would have snarled her satisfaction if her teeth weren’t thoroughly buried in her enemy’s neck. As it was, Regina had to focus on keeping her grip as the Helkaer shifted to the left, clearly trying to dislodge Regina’s teeth. Now that she had a grip, Regina did not want to loosen it. What if she could never get her teeth into her enemy’s flesh again? Regina had no experience as a fighter; given her opponent was a Helkaer, this mare probably had loads of it. Regina knew her only advantages lay in height and surprise. She had to play off of those for as long as she could if she was to find success in this battle.
With her neck stretched out to keep her teeth embedded in the mare’s neck and the level of her intent focus, Regina completely missed her opponent’s counterattack. Her only warning was a growl, followed immediately by teeth digging into her right cheek. Regina squealed, her teeth dislodging from the Helkaer’s neck as she scrabbled backwards, desperately trying to dislodge the teeth embedded in her cheek. It hurt. The gold cream champagne mare had never been in a battle before, and never been injured like this. Was this a serious injury? Was that why it hurt so much? Or did every injury hurt like this? Would it scar?
Desperate to get rid of the mare’s grip, create distance, and counterattack in some way, Regina twisted her head to the left and away from the Helkaer. Following her instincts, she rose onto her hind legs, lashing out with her front hooves towards the Helkaer’s head. If she could hit this mare in the head and daze her, that would be fantastic, but Regina’s real aim was just to create some distance and recover. Her wound stung, blood dripping steadily onto the ground. The injury didn’t hinder her movement or breathing, but it did hurt, and it probably looked terrible, too. Adrenaline wasn’t enough to stop her from feeling the pain of it. How long would this go on? Regina didn’t know how much longer she could last. She was no experienced veteran, able to weather this in a battle of attrition. She was a mare armed only with her instincts and a sudden burst of courage, all of which had led her here.

When Harlan felt her teeth sink into the painted fem's cheek, a sharp thrill of desire and delight ran through her veins. The blood on her tongue brought her hunger rushing back up to the surface as she held on tight, relishing the sound of pain that filled the air. That was exactly what the wraith wanted to hear. It had still infuriated her that the other mare had attacked first, but there was something satisfying about seemingly catching her off guard as well. What did the stranger expect? For the Helkaer to have her lifeblood paint her beautiful pelt and there be no retribution? No. Harlan needed to prove herself beyond simply working behind the scenes for the Brotherhood. This was certainly the moment to do so. As the golden mare retreated, Harlan moved with her. That hunger inside her screamed for more and, now that the vixen's flesh was between her jaws, she didn't want to let go any time soon. Perhaps a whole slice would be removed and the private would finally consume equine flesh. That blind desire made her unable to anticipate the mare's rear. The taller mare was up on her hind legs, front daggers snapping out. The movement caused the Helkaer to release her hold and she felt hooves strike her just below her left eye. The pain was sharp and nearly took her breath away. The dappled fem took a step back, shutting her eyes as blood began to steadily flow from the relatively deep cut that now marred her beautiful face. Her snarl of anger rumbled from her chest as she tried to blink around the almost immediate swelling. Her eyesight began to blur on the left side of her field of vision as the sharp scent of blood filled her nostrils. With a fresh burst of rage, Harlan moved to her right and reached up to close her jaws along the mare’s stomach a few inches from her front leg. She wanted to see that ivory painted pelt stained red and taste more of that delicious flesh and blood. This stranger had to pay for what she had done, and what better way to teach her a lesson than to rip open that sensitive skin? Harlan’s eyesight may be hindered, but she hoped that she was close enough and had estimated the distance well enough to catch the other’s flesh between her jaws again. And, for the fem’s sake, she had better hope that the Helkaer’s vision wasn’t permanently damaged. If it was, their future encounters would forever be filled with blood and pain. Roleplayer & Character: Sunfrost w/ Regina Cohesiveness: 8.5 Comments:Overall good, but various minor grammar mistakes that caught my attention while reading. To stay would take courage she’d so far lacked. (Needs to be "take the courage") would end badly given Regina had absolutely no battle experience. (Comma needed after badly) Regina only knew rage as she lunged forward, teeth missing their mark (Needs to be "lunged forward, her teeth") The gold cream champagne mare had never been in a battle before, and never been injured like this. (Needs to be "and had never") Every time she’d come into contact with a situation that threatened her safety, she’d run away and gotten others to help - Gotten should be "get" or had "gotten" Regina squealed, her teeth dislodging from the Helkaer’s neck as she scrabbled backwards, desperately trying to dislodge the teeth embedded in her cheek - backwards should just be backward Realism: 9.5 Comments:Everything was realistic. Regina's first attack was a little chaotic and for me a little hard to follow. She attacked "downwards" which read to me more like lunging for the chest than her Harlan's head until later on. I know height was mentioned but there was a disconnect for me here. Movement: 10 Comments:The attacks made sense, though hinged a little heavily on just a 2 inch height difference. Either way, they did work and would make sense for an untrained fighter to do. I felt Regina moved well in response to Harlan. It was a nice flow. Completion of the Form: 10 Comments:Always complete. Total: 38 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roleplayer & Character: illɘgal w/ Harlan Cohesiveness: 9.5 Comments:Reads well with almost no noticeable errors. Harlan's focus in the initial battle post was a little harder for me to get into the flow of. Realism: 10 Comments:Moved realistically. The attacks felt realistic. Movement: 9 Comments:Harlan's second attack doesn't seem as well planned as the first. She is hit in the face by a hoof, causing her left eye to be blurred. She then moves in to the right to try and bite Regina's armpit, putting her face right back into hoof range and going in on the side she can't see well from. She had the time to step back, why not go in from the side she can see out of instead of estimating where she has to lunge in addition to going right back into the front hooves? In a fight with only 2 attacks, each one is important to get right. I felt that Harlan responded well to Regina and her movements flowed well. Completion of the Form: 10 Comments:Always complete. Total: 38.5 The Winner is Harlan. This tallying had me on edge. Great job guys! Exciting to read.
