for the event! // 1,330 words
My life is coming to an end. How can I, a strong mare who once was feared by some stallions, be falling for a mere wimp like him? It felt as if I didn’t know who I was anymore. I had been in these lands for some time now, making only a mere handful of friends in my journey to become leader of a herd. They had all called me heartless at one point or another, but most enjoyed my personality as they were similar to myself. I stood within the shade of a large oak tree, the tall green grass gently swayed, tickling my belly as I lay there, thinking…
Do I tell him? What would he say? I’m so different than him… Does he feel the same? The questions constantly replayed in my head as I wondered about how he would react and it tugged at my heart. It brought me back to those days as a young filly, hated by all, heart constantly bleeding and mourning the loss that I felt of a family and mother. It was the start of my heart dying inside or so I thought… There must have been some point in my life that it didn’t completely die, but merely… hibernate. Now it felt almost whole again, fluttering at the first sign of him. My eyes slowly began to close, pictures floating in my head of the few memories of him…
The sound of his whinny awoke me from my short slumber, a nap if you will, and instantly it felt as if my large heart was about to beat out of my golden chest. Quickly, I clamored to my feet and my eyes looked, almost frantically, for the color of his rust coat. His plain red coat stood out to me once he was in complete view and I could feel my skin crawl with anticipation. I returned his call with my own lyrics and pricked my ears forward, raising my head slightly as well. I was about to be grasping at straws to find words that weren’t complete gibberish. He was aware of my slightly higher intelligence, but this would be the first and probably only time I would look like a complete imbecile in his presence.
We were of the same height, however, he bore no chrome on his pelt and was red as the metallic tasting liquid within my veins. A weak looking stallion, but somehow his personality had found a home within my heart and had made an entire mess of it. A nicker released from my mouth as his hooves halted before me, my eyes met with his, pools of brown bliss melted into mine. I never quite understood what I found so appealing about such a plain jane, subtle stallion, but here he was.. ”Hello Velusa.” As plain as he was, his deep voice shook me to my core, rattling my bones, and making my muscles extremely weak. You pathetic mare.. get yourself together!
”Hi… How are you? I’ve just been hanging out here since you’ve left.” My response was so insanely awful that I felt like I was back to my yearling stage… What is wrong with you?... A small smile and a lowering of the head quickly ensued, embarrassment filled and if the ability were there, my cheeks would be as red as his pelt. We had only known each other for a few weeks, starting with just a passing as I made my way into this land before me. I found heaven in these lands and now I found heaven within another being and not just my own self.
”I’m delightful, Velusa.” As he made his way closer, the stranger I had fallen for nuzzled my shoulder, leaving chills dancing along my spine, my pale tail twitched slightly at such a simple delight. I knew only of his personality and not of his name, but this stranger need no name to lie within my heart and rest his legs from running through my dreams any time my eyes closed. I followed his every move, taking in every inch as I do each time he blesses me with his presence. ”Come, let us take a stroll my dear.” His deep voice would ruffle the feathers on any ready hen.
We had met at this Oak tree a few times in the past, never leaving the shade, but today would be the first day we would venture out from our normal meetings together. In unison, our legs stepped up into a trot, enjoying the spring breeze that blew through our manes. Tossing my head, I surged ahead into a graceful canter, long legs striding out perfectly in the right lead before kicking up my heels and flying into the left. Turning on a dime, I double-backed around to his left side and nipped playfully at the short, dense mane that bounced along his nape. A smiled crossed his face and as I glanced at his face, a strange thing started to occur...
Somehow his forelock had turned into a group of small feathers... What…? My body halted quickly, the red stallion turned slowly, a screech erupting from his.. beak? A snort erupted from my nostrils, one that could be heard for miles. I lifted my tail and froze, trying to figure out what sort of sorcery was at hand. The stallion circled my body at a lope, tail and mane turning into feathers. Another screech erupted from him and soon his entire head was morphed into… A hawk? What in the hell? Trying to figure out what sort of land I just came into meant that I must be in an alternate universe and that the mountains I climbed over must have been more than just mountains. Turning on my haunches, I launched myself back towards the Oak… only it wasn’t there anymore. Frantically I glanced backwards only to find that he was gone? Halting, I looked around, ears listening for a screech… Then it hit me… A hawk was grasping onto my face, ripping at my flesh and boring it’s talons deeply into my ear and skull…
Muscles jerked as my body awoke in such a fright. I was surrounded by darkness… I stood quickly, body slightly covered in sweat as I realized it was merely night and it was far from time to meet the stallion who just visited me in what turned out to be a nightmare. The hawk that haunted me in my dream was one that lived nearby and I could hear him screeching within the night, almost pained. I looked about, pinpointing the area from which is came from. I trotted towards the noise and found the hawk dangling from a tree, leg slightly caught in a twisted branch from a weeping willow. Walking closer, the hawk froze, ”I promise I won’t hurt you… So don’t be dumb.” I walked closer and lowered my head, pushing upwards on the hawk’s fragile, but large body. Raising him upwards, the hawk used my head to grasp and balance to remove his leg from the wispy branches. However, his talons sunk slightly into my poll, causing some pain and blood to trickle down my forelock and around my ears, staining the hair rust.
As soon as it seemed to start, it was over. The hawk pushed away from my head and the willow, finding himself in the sky until nesting with his mate along the tree line. I retreated back to my sleeping patch and reflected on how my life would be if I began to tell the stallion that I had fallen in love with his plain self. Would he actually turn into a hawk? A snicker came from my throat and I smiled to myself. Let’s hope not. My golden and ebony pillars folded beneath me and I lay my head to sleep, waiting for the true sunrise to great my body, warming it up for the oncoming day.
