just a cold hearted vixen
2,103 words // I don't have a problem
My hooves always found the meadow at times when I was bored, but lately I seemed to find the soothing mountain air much more appealing. Kular Valley was such a wonderous place, the trees, mountains, and just the wonderful colors that covered the horizon from spring flowers blooming. The snow had melted weeks ago, except for some higher places that still were colored blank and pale. The brisk morning air tousled my mane, the cream strands whipping around as I descended lower, heading towards the valley within between the mountains.
I was nearly there when a noise caught my attention. Rocks shifted and a high pitched groan met my ears, body halting in response. My nostrils flared as I attempted to catch the scent of whatever creature lie near, but the breeze was at my back. One is never truly alone are they?... Careful steps lured my golden body closer to a large rock that seemed to have been disturbed, judging by the rock slide that happened below. A poorly placed hoof caused a small avalanche of pebbles to careen down the mild slope and the creature stirred on the other side of the rock.
There was no whimper, but merely a small, high-pitched groan in response to my ill step. Nostrils flared, a snort released, and I found myself peering around the boulder only to find a young filly, crimson trickling from her a hind leg. ”Who… who are you?...” A ragged breath was drawn by the youngster before continuing on. ”I need help.. my mother.. she’s gone…” Resisting a snort, I was so tempted to just leave the bleeding filly by herself, to figure out life on her own and to realize how cruel this world truly is, but something inside me tugged at my cold heart.
”Where is she? Why are you bleeding? Stop your whimpering and speak straight, youngster.” The stern tone dripped from my speckled lips as I took a step closer to the filly, assessing her wounds. ”Can you stand? You’ll die if you stay here and pout.” A nudged her back, not awaiting a response as I was certain there was a better place than her for her to possibly expire. The rocks beneath the large boulder wouldn’t hold much longer as another ill step caused a response of rocks falling down to the steeper, less forgiving portion of the mountain.
”Ow… OOOWWW… You’re…” A squeal erupted from the tiny body that echoed off the trees. ”My mother.. she’s… He got her…” The incessant babbling that occurred from such a small being had become irritating and it was tempting still just to leave her puny body behind. I nudged once more and snorted against her small, speckled body. Her bodily fluids stained her predominantly white pelt red and pink in places her leg had leaked. Inspecting them briefly, the wound looked as if it was a puncture, but almost like a scratch… Shit… If this was a lion, it was watching… Raising my head, ears switched to every direction possible, mismatched orbs watching every shadow and tree.
”Please tell me it isn’t a damn cougar…” The terror that filled her small body sent shivers with it as she struggled to stand on such uneven ground, the blood that pooled against her released down the rocks. The filly was weak, but at least getting her to somewhere comfy would aid in a much more soothing expiration. Sometimes you are so morbid… I like it. Resisting a smirk, I giggled internally, to avoid freaking the little chicken shit any further, since the lion would be ready for another meal. The lion must be extremely desperate to attempt at a mare and her foal, but who was I to judge? Kitties have to eat too.
The young appaloosa filly staggered towards the trees, jerked her head in either direction, constantly watching for her assailant. We reached the tree line, my nostrils constantly smelling the scent of blood as it stained my nose from helping the pathetic child. Some horses cease to amaze me at how pathetically they raise their spawn. An eye roll followed, something I am extremely poor at hold back. As grass finally reached our hooves, I smiled and gave one final nudge for the filly. ”Wha… You’re not going to leave me here are you?” The youngster’s body lurched towards my chest and attempted to cling to my legs like flies on poop.
”You’re a big girl. You can fend for yourself.” Snorting, I nudged her with a knee, pushing her off balance she fell onto her side, a squeal/wale came so fiercely from such a wee body, my body jerked from such a surprise. The child had landed upon her wounds, causing the painful scream and alerting almost every predator in the damn valley that she was ripe for the taking. Almost unexpectedly, a sigh came from my lungs and I nudged her back to her feet. ”Let’s go… You’ll need some form of safety otherwise you’ll have wolves to worry about instead of the lion. Just follow the tree line down to the valley and we’ll figure out what to do next.”
”I… My leg.. It hurts…” It would not be the last time I would hear those words from the filly. I knew she would eventually repeat them again during such a journey for a weakling filly. Our journey felt like it was lasting hours, when in reality it had only been ten minutes due to her constant whimpers and moans. Her leg was still bleeding slightly and some crimson stained taller grasses as we journeyed, leaving a trail for the lion to follow closely. Nostrils flared as the smell of water filled them. I peered ahead and a small pool reflected from the rays of light that filtered through the tree foliage. I nudged her along and nickered, something I rarely ever do, and gave a small smile to the creature.
”There is some water ahead. You’ll need some for strength and you can rest shortly.” Though my actions may have been warm, the lyrics that followed were cold and slightly annoyed as my day was planned for exploring, not assisting some filly whose mother was too ignorant to keep her safe… Shaking my head I kept old memories at bay, not wanting to relive such a travesty. We reached the water, the child raising her pace at the idea of water and rest. We both stood at the water’s edge, lowering our heads to drink the cooling liquid. ”Wash your leg in the water. You’ll need to get rid of all that blood.”
Watching her walk into the water, I waiting for her retreat to assess her wounds much closer, hoping the wounds were attempting to cease bleeding. My attention was on the filly so much that the last thing I expected was to have a lion crashing down upon my back. Claws grasped my shoulders and hindquarters and it felt as if my entire body was being burned by fire. A sound that I hadn’t heard in years erupted like a volcano from my lungs, a scream… no a battle cry. ”You piece of shit! I attempted to buck and rear, hoping some low hanging branches would deter the bastard from my flesh, but instead I felt an attempt of spinal cord severing from the canines of the devil cat. A cross between a groan and scream cast from my burning lungs as I did what seemed most logical… I flipped… Literally, I flipped my body over with one strong rear and landed atop the cougar, hearing someone’s bones crunch from the excruciating turnover.
There was a definite release of talons from my back as I turned to my side quickly, rising to my hooves. Now, my body was drenched in my own crimson river. Gasping for air I franticly turned to look at the frozen filly, then back to the feline that lie motionless upon the trodden grass. The lion was extremely skinny, clearly infested from some form of disease. Its mind must have been completely gone if it truly thought it would bring my grown ass self to my demise. ”It that your cat?” Speaking was painful even though my back and rump were the only extremely wounded thing, the pain from my neck felt similar to a scratch as he barely broke skin. My gaze stayed locked on the child as I joined her in the water, surprised that she hadn’t attempted to run for cover during the short scuffle.
”Is… Is…” Her shivering voice seemed so meek and mouse-like that I had to nuzzle her face to keep her from continuing. Merely nodding in response to the question she would soon answer, I lay down in the shallow pool, crimson water extending from my wounds. The sensation was more than unpleasant, but I needed to clean those filthy claw marks. Kitty claws are not clean.. Last thing I need is to lose this glorious booty to a crazed cat. I groaned and closed my eyes for just a moment. At least the filly is safe and I’ll have some badass scars.
What may have seemed a few moments, must have turned into a couple minutes. I was awoken by the young filly, my body instantly rising upwards, knocking her sideways and pain surging through my sore, tattered body. "What is it? What happened?" Snorting out my words I looked back to the tawny carcass and briefly smiled at my amazing feat. No one shall know it was a weakling. With these marks it shall look like a massive male. I felt my blood slowly trickle down, it went much slower than the water than had poured off of me. I took to the grasses, sending out one final kick to the feline cranium for good measure.
"You fell asleep. It hasn't been long, but I didn't want to be alone... Can you take me to the valley?" Groaning, my body adding a fake wince to make it seem as though it wasn't because of the added burden this filly has caused. I nodded and nudged her rump, the filly was already walking a little better, albeit to seem as tough as myself. I lead her away from the tree line, keeping us in the open and away from branches that could harbor another infected felis. Saying I was scared would be a fool's thought, but cautious... yes. Who else would want another shredding of their pelt one right after another? Not me. I enjoy my gorgeous coat. As we walked down the gradual slope, the filly seemed to have some amount of strength back. I started to admire the filly, maybe there was hope for her yet. It made me think about how I was as a youngster and how, if it happened, I would raise my future progeny to be tough straight from my womb. The journey felt long as my muscles screaming with every step, shoulders and hindquarters torn and needing rest, not to venture down a slope to deliver this filly to a herd that may not even be there.
"Are you sure your family is there? If we seriously get all the way down there and this herd of yours doesn't exist... I'll be more than upset, young one." Grumbling along, it seemed the filly must have either not heard my complaining or chose to ignore me. Hopefully it was not due to her own doubts of her family being there. The farther we went, the more oaks and elms were visible, showing signs that the valley was close. I could smell the old fumes of other horses from hours past and the filly seemed to perk up extremely. Letting out a shrill whinny, the three-legged lame filly burst into an awkward trot, a faint group of whinnies greeting her back. Finally... I get to leave this twerp... The young appaloosa marked fae burst into the sunshine filled valley, quickly surrounded by a herd of mismatched horses, one in particular catching my eye. It was a small, spotted mare and she boasted crimson trickles upon her back. There's dear ol' mother. An urge set forth a small amount of rage within my body and I resisted the urge to burst through the treeline, but instead stuck to the shadows within. The foal was safe, with idiots, but safe and I was left to tend to the wounds the cougar had delivered in its sickly rampage. I had done some good in the world with no ill-intent and truthfully? It felt no different.
