There'd been a time when life had just become too much and Zana had thrown all allegiances to the wind. It seemed like every second of her life had been mandated by who she had to remain loyal to and what to do based on what would make them happiest. The entire focus on it had been a massive drag and took so much of her energy. The years spent beside her brother were difficult and despite learning so much, she felt like she was already ten by the time she was four. God, she still had her entire life to live! He'd taken up so much of the start and she felt like she couldn't get any of that youthful vigor back. She'd even had a child already and though he was young, it felt like time wouldn't even slow for a second. She had tried to show some loyalty to the dark herd she'd so wrongly joined under the assumption it'd be safe. That backfired when she was immediately stolen and the leader faltered on his word to get back anyone who was taken. No loyalty lost there. But this new leader, this Helkaer woman, she was something. Now, Zana had a thing against most other living things that had ovaries. She couldn't fucking stand them. They were either too much of a whiny diva or working too hard to try and prove themselves. It was all useless and the ebony vix refused to even give them the time of day. Just running into another woman usually made her roll her eyes so hard she could peer into the depths of her brain. This new Commander though, she seemed.. different? It sounded so cliche when it was put like that, but Zana had to recognize something when she saw it. Respira was this woman who demanded respect from simply the way she held herself. She didn't waltz around bitching and hissing like a normal dark mare, something that Zana had certainly expected upon arrival. All the words to come out of the Helkaer's mouth had been, well, logical. It was a little irritating. The dainty Arabian mare who tried so hard to hate every other woman just couldn't find something to grasp that was worth all the hate. It was just more effort than she was willing! So, she'd fallen in line with the herd and began living out her uneventful days in the depths of Toxin Raj.
Living a beautifully boring life had its merits, but Zana soon began to feel bored or even worthless. She was doing her best to raise Link and help him with his stomach issues. The poor colt had such bad nightmares and lost so much sleep to his agonizing stomach pains. It was all she ever dealt with now, hardly even leaving the caves, and she remained like that for quite some time. At the same time, this silly, little palomino began to grow on her. She was respectable as a leader and Zana was drawn to the strength she seemed to harness. It suited a lady wonderfully and Zana was hooked. She wanted to be more than just this boring, herd broodmare. It wasn't her style to just stay around all day doing nothing. She had to do something great.
So, she signed up for a gladiator tournament. Despite not being a gladiator. Despite having never fought a serious battle.
Which brought her to the present, standing beside one of the pools of water in her cave home. The dim moonlight offered just enough to see, but not enough to take in the full details of the dark room. With a heavy sigh, Zana peered down into the dark water. A thin, shapely face stared back at her. Dark brown eyes caught some of the moonlight and glistened in an almost sinister manner. God, she looked so small. Thin bones were obvious in her build; they looked so easy to fracture. There wasn't much muscle to her either. The girl groaned and took a step forward, examining her sides in the little pool of rain run-off. Her entire body was clearly built for something like running or just anything agility based, nothing strength related. Youth was still evident and though her udders were beginning to retract, it was still obvious she had a child around. At least he would be off her milk soon, she mused. Bearing a child hadn't left her as built as it seemed to leave most mothers. With enough chasing after Link, she'd easily regained her petite form. While she might be suitable to win a race, there was not a single feature that spoke for being capable of an entire battle tournament. She was fucking fucked.
With a frustrated sigh, the ebony mare strode away from the water. Her gaze fell over Link's sleeping form. The colt's chestnut hide was soaked in sweat and frothed up from some sort of night terror. He twitched endlessly in his sleep and his legs worked as if running from his demons. Zana felt a painful squeeze in her chest. A colt so young didn't deserve something like this. Perhaps, if she won this whole thing, she could take his mind off this for a little while. Maybe inspire the colt to have dreams of fighting and winning; to prove that even someone as small as she could beat the monsters. And although she couldn't imagine what sort of monsters her son was trying to run from, she prayed that it might work. That and alongside her hopes for gaining respect from Respira, Zana wanted to gain some sort of place in the world. Maybe one that could find a cure for her son. Maybe one that could lead to some life where it wasn't just the same, hiding away in a cave and facing bad dreams at night. If she could actually do something with her life, maybe it would actually change something within it. That was all she wanted.
The moon's light was growing a bit stronger now and Zana knew that marked that it would be dawn within the next few hours. She would be needing her sleep, needing to put all these restless thoughts aside. The mare walked quietly over to where her son lay and carefully lowered herself down next to him. She placed her head across his shoulders, watching his twitching slow until his breathing was normal again. With a sigh, she closed her eyes. The battles would begin in the morning. She would have to drag her ass all the way to the battlegrounds and hang around there until completion. She could do it though, at least the first few battles. Winning was really the last thing she expected and she didn't think she needed it. Just a chance to change things, that was all.
