Solidarity followed me wherever I went. I was a lone being in this world of billions and honestly, it was disheartening at times. My pale pelt reflected upon each small ounce of sun that peaked through the canopy of Oaks and Maples. The heat of the day felt like nothing while I explored this forest. The spring air felt good to my lungs with every breathe, but the sense of summertime heat drew closer. All around me, the forest was alive, birds flew to and from their nests where young would soon hatch and scream for their next meal. Pausing, I took in my surroundings, the path was partially clear due to being used by other animals as a way to go to and from the water source I had reached prior. With a flick of the tail, the explorer inside drug me through a small patch of low, still growing briars.
Taking a course away from a well beaten path finds me often, though I am more nervous than most, but only if there are equines nearby. Social skills lacked for me, but sometimes it truly was okay in my opinion. My mind constantly ran though my feet stayed at a walk, eyes peered at every shadow and flicker of foliage. A log lay before me and my pillars halted, sniffing the large, fungi speckled trunk. Most of the twigs and branches had broken off, the tree having died many months prior and I couldn't help but sigh. It was such a large, old tree, but something had caused its time frame of life to come to a close, lying at rest to slowly dissolve for many years...
I took it upon myself to doze off, lying next to that fallen giant. Picking my mouth up from the ground, a twitch of the lip released the leaf litter that clung tightly to my velvet bottom lip. Peeking around briefly, I slowly made my way up to my hooves, yawning. It had been anywhere from thirty minutes to an hour that I rested, the world around me continued on with its own life. Shaking my entire body, the leaves and small clods of dirt fell back to the earth below me. Finally, I took in the world around me and continued on my journey, blazing a trail around the fallen tree.
I had gone maybe a mile into the woods, a smell of water reached my nostrils and excitement shivered through my body. Trotting through the woods, enjoying the noise of leaves and snapping sticks beneath my feet, I entered an opening. The eerie, still air sucked away all the happiness from my body, replacing it with nervous tingles. Something had occurred here that caused everything to halt, go silent, and run away. Lowering my nostrils to the ground, the smell of a cougar filled my nostrils and a nervous snort erupted. I raised my head and peered into the trees. Noticing a small area of disturbed dirt and mud, blood covered some of the ground.
Curiosity filled me and I wondered what exactly was taken. Following the blood, it didn't take me more than 6 steps to figure out the poor soul who had lost to such a large predator. It was a large, mature doe from what I could see. There were no signs of velvet forming on the skull and her body seemed too skinny. I didn't need to investigate more to see that she had expired, but my attention was quickly pulled away. A twig snapped to my left and my body briefly froze. Whatever it was, didn't seem to be very big, but once it revealed itself my body went at ease as sadness took its place.
The creature was a young, but an early born fawn. I wasn't sure of the gender, but it was alone and my heart wanted to clutch it tightly. Lowering my skull, I slowly moved towards the quivering creature. Spots along its body were just starting to fade, revealing that it should be able to stomach solid foods, but briefly suffer without the aid of mother's milk. Closing the distance between us, I nickered softly, kneeling down to my knees, inviting it to come close to me. The fawn lay shaking still, hesitation seemed to fill its mind. "Come here little thing... I won't hurt you..." Pushing my nose out further, chin resting on the ground, my body in the most awkward and embarrassing pose ever, but I wanted to help this little ungulate....
I had laid upon the ground for close to an hour, the fawn next to me sapping the warmth from my body. I could tell it was hungry, but I needed to bring him to some sort of food source. Small, pokey hooves stabbed at my side playfully as it bounced around me. "You need some food, little one." Nudging it's body away from mine, I stood to my feet slowly. Nuzzling the fawn's large ears, I nickered, having it follow me away from where it's mother had been taken by a large feline. My pace felt less than a walk, as the fawn struggled to keep up, hunger probably stabbing at its body.
Happening upon a small patch of blackberries, I nudged it's body towards the bush, nibbling at a few myself. A small noise came from its body as tiny lips picked a couple berries off. "They taste good don't they?" Nickering again, I knocked off a few more it to reach easily. "You're going to need a name soon... but I just don't know what you are..." I kept watch over the child for a few minutes as he ate a few more berries, then attempted to nibble upon the leaves surrounding us. The small, white fluffed tail flicked happily behind it and a smile crossed my face. I guess I have a little buddy now.
