Spring was in the air, which meant flowers blooming, grass growing, and animals coming out of their hiding places. For Delilah, it meant sneezing. She had known it was coming, given that she'd grown up here, but that didn't make it any easier to bear. Her entire face felt swollen which made her rather somber mood even worse than normal. Her little piece of Toxin Raj had grown in the past two months. It had been just her and Link. Then, over a year ago she'd discovered that their nights together had resulted in a pregnancy. She'd been spitting mad at first, thinking about how much children annoyed her, but she'd rather mellowed out toward the whole thing since. Her purpose as a future member of the Helkaer had been gone from her life for some time now, so she needed something else to occupy her time. Why not raise a kid with Link? It wasn't as if she had any other plans - other than fleeting thoughts of revenge that died as soon as she remembered she was not properly trained or prepared for such a thing. Her sleeping spells had gotten better, but they were far from gone from her life entirely. There were several moments where she'd passed out while watching the kids and woke up to find them staring down at her screeching in their tiny voices. She had to explain to them that this happened to her and that it was okay. Having two kids had not been in the plan, but at least it meant they could keep each other busy. Void and Wolf, her two little brats. She cared about them more than she thought she would. It was a deep, protective kind of love. It made her question more and more why the hell her mother had left her to rot with Charm for so many months if this is the kind of love she felt toward her kids. But maybe Respira had never truly loved her children.
Delilah sneezed, grumbling afterward and rubbing her face with her leg. It was in these moments that Delilah wished she was in a cold, dead place like other Dark lands were - or a place with some shitty building. At least then she could create a barrier between herself and the pollen. She supposed she should be thankful that at least Toxin Raj didn't have many trees to speak of - the flowers and grasses were bad enough.
Right now her kiddos were off playing with their uncle, Cahethal, and some other foal named Persephone that had showed up to Toxin Raj one day. The only reason Delilah cared was because they wanted to play with her kids. Cahethal was her half-brother and the same age as her children which was pretty fucking weird, but he was a kid they could play with. Persephone was a cambion girl, some spawn of a demon and a mortal. When she'd been younger, Delilah contemplated having a cambion kid of her own to serve the Helkaer. Then she realized she hated kids and decided against it. She still hated kids other than her own.
She was taking the moment of free time to take a walk, though she was quickly wondering why the hell she thought it was a good idea when she was spending most of it sneezing and trying to peer at the scenery with watery eyes. "Fuck this," she muttered under her breath, even as she kept going. The grass and flowers were bright and vibrant against the relentless rolls of green, making Toxin Raj look like some sort of paradise. Delilah could even spot the flower after which she was named. She curled her lip. She hated it. She was not some pretty flower. She was broken and abused and apathetic. She trailed around Toxin Raj like a dark cloud whenever she wasn't actively avoiding everyone else by staying in her own piece of the territory - a piece that nigh everyone in the herd knew was hers and knew to avoid it. Link moving in with her had helped her mood somewhat, as did the arrival of their kids, but beneath it all, she was still bitter and simmering with rage. Maybe one day she would have the strength to do something about it.
As she walked, she became vaguely aware of something moving in the corner of her eye, though her eyes were blurred and out-of-focus. When she turned her head to catch a glimpse of it, it creeped away. This game went on several more times until Delilah pretended she didn't notice it there, stopped, and then turned. This time, she found herself face to face with... a fox.
She felt a bit dumbfounded at the anticlimatic nature of it. It was such a tiny little thing with red fur and a bushy tail. It gave the appropriate yip when she confronted it and crouched into the long grass, trying to hide. Now that she knew what it was, she could see it easily, especially since she'd been expecting a wolf or some bear. "Why are you following me?" She asked, though fully realizing the fox probably didn't understand anything she was saying. She turned away from it with a disgusted sound and continued walking. Though, predictably, she could see it still. She twitched her ears in irritation, pinning them to her head. Just ignore it, she told herself. She sneezed again.
However, much as she tried to ignore it, having a companion that she didn't invite irritated her more than anything else. She eventually whirled around on the thing, baring her teeth and lashing her tail behind her. The fox gave a pitiful squeak and hid, trembling. But, instead of feeling triumphant at its fear, Delilah felt bad. It's just a little baby, she thought, twisting her lips ruefully, like yours. She sighed and turned back around, giving herself a shake. "Fine," she muttered, "come with." She had no idea why the fox would want to follow her in the first place. You smell like milk, maybe it's looking for its mom, she mused. Was that even something a fox baby would do? She, after all, looked nothing like a fox. But even so, she could see it following her again. She found herself slowing her pace so it could catch up to her. She rounded the border, half-way through her walk of Toxin Raj.
The fox followed her the entire way, eventually getting brave enough to trot beside her now that she'd slowed down. She felt waves of indignation at being followed by this small thing, but she reasoned that she honestly didn't care. What did it matter that a fox was following her around? It wasn't hurting anyone. Void and Wolf would probably like it too. It was small and cute and fluffy. She felt the corners of her lips twitch in a laugh. She'd found her kids a pet.
By the time she made it back to her corner of Toxin Raj, the fox was bouncing happily beside her. She rolled her eyes at it, but let it do what it wanted all the same. Her kids were still out playing, she noticed. Well, they would be in for a surprise when they got back. She settled herself by one of the trees, watching the fox come over to her. It plopped right down beside her, its black eyes staring at her. She stared back. "I suppose I should find a name for you," she mused outloud. Then she sneezed again for good measure.
