Casi had not seen the bedraggled group when it had come to the mountain, but he could certainly imagine it in his mind's eye. He'd been on the other side of the mountain helping someone with a sore ankle when they had arrived. He didn't learn about it until hours later, when Respira was set up in the cavern and her entourage was set up on the outskirts. Zana had told him the story and he'd been horrified to hear about it. Respira had done some absolutely awful things, but he was not sure if she deserved to be burned alive. From what Zana was saying, it did not look good. He wondered what would happen if she didn't make it. He wasn't sure how to feel about that outcome himself. He barely knew her. She was family, but only in the blood-related sense. To him, she was more like a figure, a potential adversary, someone to watch out for. The Helkaer Commander, master of chaos, represented the opposite of his views as a Vigilum. Fortunately, they had never had to come into conflict, though he'd been prepared for that ever since she come to the mountain that day, asking what had happened to Lanathia. Now she was no longer Commander and a far more unknown figure stood in her place. Casi knew nothing of Sly on a personal level, only that she was bloodthirsty and power-hungry just like every other Helkaer. Maybe that would make it easier.
He was not allowed to see Respira and tend to her wounds. Zana had taken on that reponsibility herself. Casi was honestly fine with that. He wasn't sure if he was up to helping for this one. If he had to, he had to, but he had a feeling the Commander might try to kill him if he tried, even in her weakened state. So, he would help by restocking their herb supply. Treating burns would run through their herb stores quickly. That was something he could do and he was content with it.
However, throughout this process, his thoughts turned to the horses that Respira had brought with her. One was her daughter and the other was Zana's son, and the other two were the children that they had together. Casi didn't so much as know them as know of them. They'd been involved in the conflict with the demon. The son, Void, had been taken hostage by the demon and it had forced their band to split into two groups - one to confront Abysm and one to rescue him from his fate. Obviously, they had succeeded, though Casi had no idea what exactly what happened to the boy. He seemed a bit of an odd creature, though the whole family seemed odd, if he was honest. Delilah, Respira's daughter, fell asleep at random intervals, Link seemed tense and liked to go for runs, and Wolf represented her name well, prowling around the mountain. He got the eerie feeling that she'd been eating some living thing the other day, though he wasn't sure if that was just him being paranoid. He was not entirely sure why they had accompanied Respira back to Mount Vigilum. From what he understood, she and Delilah did not get along. Had they resolved this conflict or was there some other reason they had left? Toxin Raj was burned, yes, but it was still there home. He could not imagine leaving Omashu even if it burned. He would find some way to salvage it. He couldn't leave it behind. But it hasn't burned down so how would you know? he chided himself gently. Whatever their reason for being here, they were welcome. Mount Vigilum was a refuge for all and they could stay as long as they liked. So long as they kept themselves civil.
He was foraging along the base of the mountain for herbs when he realized that he wasn't alone. Void was lurking nearby, though lurking was probably not the appropriate term. He was walking along, his head low to the ground, searching for something. His two wolves were close by, watching him intently. Personally, the wolves gave Casi the creeps. They were a natural predator to horses and he had no idea why the family kept four of the beasts so close. But so far, they had not done anything wrong. The wolves had not attacked anyone and remained close by the family. It didn't make Casi any less wary though. "Hello, Void," he greeted the stallion, hoping he didn't startle him. Void didn't so much as flinch. "Can I help you find something?" he asked him. Had he lost something along the base of the mountain? Maybe Casi could help him find it. Though he did have wolves at his disposal too. Surely their better sense of smell could help him? It didn't seem like it, though. They seemed as lost as he was. That made Casi even more concerned. What were they looking for?

He couldn't say that he was bored with how the past year of his life had gone. Terrifying and unexpected yes, but definitely not boring. He'd definitely never had nightmares before this year. Now, it was a surprise whether he dreamed about drowning or burning. The burning ones hurt more, but the drowning ones were far more scary. He tried not to think about it too much, but it didn't let him. The dreams continued. Luckily, he had never woken up screaming or sweating, so his parents and his sister weren't aware of it happening. He didn't want to worry them and there wasn't really anything that they could do. This might just be his life now. At least the nightmares were predictable. They'd almost gotten boring themselves. Repetitive. He wondered if Respira got nightmares about burning but then he realized that she was living the nightmare, so what use was dreaming of it? He thought maybe the nightmares existed to make sure he didn't forget the experiences so he could continue to watch out for them. Otherwise, he had no explanation for them. He'd accepted them as a part of his life now. He was trying to move on.
One of the ways he was trying to move on was to try to get back some of his bone collection. He'd had to abandon it all when they'd fled from Toxin Raj and he missed it. They were likely charred to ashes now, or he'd go back for them. So, he had to start from scratch. His sister was doing her best to hunt again and bring him back prizes, but she had to be careful now. They didn't live in Toxin Raj anymore. They lived on a mountain that served as a refuge for everyone. That meant they had to be more secretive with what they were doing. Sometimes he would follow her to the Freelands and bury the remains of what she'd killed, but that meant remembering exactly where he'd buried it and coming back to it later. The body decaying naturally cleaned the bones off better than he could with his hooves. It would be easier if he had his sister's taste for flesh and blood, but despite his curiosity about anatomy, he had no desire to put flesh or blood anywhere near his mouth. The idea was repulsive to him and he'd gagged the first time he'd tried. He didn't understand his sister's desires or why she had them, but it was who she was. It was normal. And it gave him his bone collection.
Today, he was out scoping the base of the mountain for one of the kills he'd buried. He'd managed to drag it here without anyone noticing, but now he had to figure out where he'd put it. Karnaca and Serkonos were helping him, though to be hoenst, their help left a lot to be desired. They couldn't seem to find where he'd buried it either. He'd found the general area of where he thought it should be, but it was going to take a while to scour the area for it. The fresh dirt he would have churned to dig the hole was likely packed down or scattered by now by weather and activity. He should have put some sort of marker on it, but he couldn't find one. Next time, he would have one ready first. A nice unique looking rock that he would recognize and that wouldn't be easily disturbed. There had to be something like that lying around the mountain here. The terrain was rugged enough.
He was out there for quite a while before someone found him. He'd almost found the spot now. His nose was close to the ground. The earth here looked fresher... maybe. 'Hello, Void,' a voice said behind him. He turned around slowly, wondering who was disturbing him. 'Can I help you find something?' the stallion asked. No, not stallion. Casimiro. This was Casimiro, one of the Vigilum who lived here. Void remembered him from before that, though. He'd been a part of the event where they had confronted Abysm and when Void had been kidnapped. He'd been a part of the other group, though. He was family, as Void understood it. Void's cousin. There wasn't much resemblance, though. Casi was tall and stocky where Void was shorter and leaner. Their colors were similar enough, though. Bay, silver bay, white markings. Void realized he was taking too long to reply and knew he had to come up with some kind of answer. He didn't want to reveal the truth to Casi, but he was a Vigilum, which meant he coul detect lies. It wouldn't do any good to lie to him about what he was doing. And besides, Casi was family, wasn't he? That meant he deserved to know the truth. Void just hoped it wouldn't get him kicked off the mountain. He didn't really have anywhere else to go.
"I'm looking for bones," he said to the Vigilum stallion. It was the truth, or at least part of it. He didn't reveal that the bones he was looking for were from the corpse of an animal that he'd buried so it could decay, but he was looking for bones. "I lost my collection in Toxin Raj, so I have to start over," he explained again. He wondered how weird it was for someone to collect bones. It didn't feel that weird to him. Lots of horses collected things. He just liked bones. And it wasn't as if all of his bones were from his sister's kills. Some of them had come from Caerali Desert too. Or just random places in Toxin Raj. It wasn't as if bones weren't a naturally occurring thing to collect. Just, having Wolf as a sister made his collection grow faster. And it wasn't as if she were using the bones anyway! He was just taking what was already there. Wolf was going to kill regardless of him collecting anything, so he might as well collect the bones. It would be a shame to let them go to waste.

After Casi had uttered the question, Void had turned to stare at him, with his wolves slowly following suit. Casi held the gaze with his usual friendly smile, but after several moments of silence where his cousin did not say anything, his smile began to fade. Was Void okay? Was he sick and that's why his head was so close to the ground? Was he trying to make his way up the mountain or something? Casi's gaze changed from friendliness to concern and he eyed the two wolves flanking Void. One was black and one was blue-gray. Both looked like they could give Casi a rough go of it. Neither of them were hostile as they looked at him. They were calm. Casi still didn't trust them. He glanced back at Void, wondering if he needed to repeat himself. Perhaps he was hard of hearing? Casi couldn't remember being told that, but he also couldn't remember not being told that, so it was a toss-up at this point. He opened his mouth to repeat himself again, this time slower and at a louder volume, but there was no need, as Void began to speak instead.
'I'm looking for bones,' was his response. Casi felt himself stunned into silence. That... was not what he had been expecting. Not remotely. He was expecting a trail, or a rock, or maybe an herb (if Casi was so lucky), but bones? He definitely had not been wrong to guess that the family was odd. He supposed bones could be cool. He'd never really looked at them before. 'I lost my collection in Toxin Raj, so I have to start over,' Void explained to him. Casi nodded slowly. So, a collection of bones. His cousin had a collection of bones in Toxin Raj and now he had to start over because they were likely burnt to ashes. Apparently they meant a great deal to him if he wanted to start one over again. He tried to reason that bones were not that weird to collect. They were just leftover parts of animals, right? Just like shells or claws or antlers. There were likely different shapes and sizes. Finding ones that weren't broken would probably be hard. Just like seashells, right? Casi managed a smile again. "Oh. Did you have a big collection?" he asked him. This time Void answered right away, nodding. 'Huge. It's sad that they're all gone now,' he replied. Casi felt his heart squeeze a bit. Yeah, they had lost their home. Everything they knew was gone. All that they had now was this strange mountain refuge. His life was probably odd to Void, just as Void's was odd to him. Odd wasn't a bad thing. It was just different. "Yeah that's tough. The fire must have been awful," he said sympathetically. The closest he'd been to fire had been the lava pit they'd thrown the demon into, but that had been slow-moving and he had plenty of time to escape if he had to because of that. A fire was much different.
'Yeah. I still dream about it sometimes,' Void replied again, putting his head back to the ground, though in front of Casi this time instead of facing away from him. Casi quirked a brow at his statement, though. He still dreamed about it, did he? Nightmares were probably a common occurrence after a traumatic event like that. How often did he have them? How bad were they? Instinctively, his Vigilum training began to take over as he pondered how to help Void, even if he hadn't asked for it. Casi knew of some herbs that could help calm anxiety and help deepen sleep to get rid of dreams. Was that something Void would be interested in? "I can find some herbs that will help get rid of the dreams if you like," he offered, unable to help himself, "how often do you have the dreams?" Were they once a month, once a week, once a day? That would help Casi gauge what route of treatment to pursue.

Casi's look had changed from one of friendliness to one of concern. Void wasn't sure he liked that look. He didn't need any help, really. He was managing it. He would get so used to the nightmares that they wouldn't bother him anymore. That's all he needed to do. 'Oh. Did you have a big collection?' Casi asked. This time, Void was ready to respond. He nodded. "Huge. It's sad that they're all gone now," he said. He frowned a little thinking about it. He had so many different bones. Tiny little legs bones from mice, funny looking skulls, huge ribcages from deer, even teeth and claws. All of it was gone now. He didn't like thinking about it for too long or he got too sad. So, he was trying to focus on redoing it. Then he wouldn't have to feel sad about it. His sister would bring him plenty of fresh kills and he just had to find a special marker to find them later. Everything would go back to normal then. 'Yeah that's tough. The fire must have been awful,' Casi said to him then, breaking his concentration. Immediately, memories of the fire flashed behind his mind's eye. The trees on the edge of the territory were burning. The grass was burning. Their food burned. His bones burned. Sanctuary and safety burned. He just had to focus on getting out of their alive with his sister and his parents and all of their wolves. Nothing else could have been saved. He probably would have died if he'd tried to go back and save the bones.
"Yeah. I still dream about it sometimes," he said absently as he bent his head down again, back to work. He knew he could find the spot again. Maybe he would just have to dig. That was the only way he was going to find out for sure that it was here. His wolves were really good diggers, too. It wouldn't take them that long. And if he was wrong, they could just start over again. He couldn't stop until he found the buried creature. It wasn't as if he had anything else to do, after all. 'I can find some herbs that will help get rid of the dreams if you like,' Casi said again, pulling Void's attention away from the ground once more. He raised his head, looking at his cousin with bright teal eyes. 'how often do you have the dreams?' Casi asked again. Void found his curiosity sharpening. There really was herbs that could get rid of the dreams for him? He had no idea that kind of thing existed. How could a herb get rid of dreams? Why would something he'd eaten somehow stop his brain from making dreams? Fascinating. Perhaps he should pay more attention to herbs if they had that sort of power. "You can really get rid of my dreams with herbs?" he asked, unable to hide the excitement in his voice. If herbs could do that, what else could they do? They could bring people back from the dead, as evident by Respira's current situation. He had no idea how she'd managed to cross the desert looking like she had, but she did and now herbs were keeping her alive. Void's morbid thoughts immediately flicked to the opposite side. If herbs could keep people alive, could they also kill people? The question danced on the tip of his tongue, but he wasn't sure how to ask it.
"What else can you do with them?" he asked a general question instead. Maybe he could gradually lean into it so it didn't freak Casi out so much. The last thing he wanted to do was alienate his potential teacher. "Oh, I have them almost every night. Both the burning and the drowning ones," he said, answering the question so matter-of-factly that he might as well have been discussing the weather. This earned him another concerned look from his cousin. Void wondered if he'd revealed too much now. But even so, the possibility of learning more about herbs was too tantalizing to resist. He could humor Casi if it meant learning more about those.

Despite the trauma that Casi had gone through, he didn't really have nightmares about it all. At least not regularly. He had had bad dreams about it, especially after Underoath's trial, but they had faded away and he didn't really consider them much of a problem. To hear that Void was having recurring nightmares though was concerning. How many times did he get them? Was he getting enough sleep? He didn't look particularly unhealthy because of it, but having nightmares every night was not exactly wonderul for the psyche. Everyone should have the reassurance of going to sleep every night to get actual rest and not have to worry what happened when their eyes were closed. His queries had clearly captured Void's attention as the silver bay stallion looked back up from his work to stare at Casi. There was a glitter of excitement in them. Casi felt that familiar sensation of happiness wash through him, the same feeling he always got when he helped someone. He'd be more than happy to help Void get rid of his nightmares so he could sleep better. Hopefully that could be a good start to healing from the trauma of being kidnapped. Casi couldn't imagine the fear he must have felt during it. And he shuddered to think what might have happened if Void hadn't been rescued.
'You can really get rid of my dreams with herbs?' Void asked, barely containing his excitement. Casi beamed at him. He nodded. The herbs might not get rid of the dreams completely, but they could definitely help, especially if they were combined with other kinds of healing. 'What else can you do with them?' Void asked. Casi felt another wash of excitement and giddiness. Did Void truly have a curiosity about herbs? Did that mean that he wanted to learn them? Casi was always happy to each anyone who wanted to learn. He would teach the whole world if he could. Unfortunately, the world had to come to him first. Teaching others about herbs was probably his favorite part about being a Vigilum. 'Oh, I have them almost every night. Both the burning and the drowning ones,' Void answered the second part of his question then. His tone was so matter-of-fact despite the subject material that Casi's smile and giddiness evaporated almost instantly. He had the nightmares every night? Both of the drowning and the fire? That was not good. Casi felt himself scrutizing Void again, wondering if he could see any signs of sleeplessness. "Herbs won't cure it completely, but they will definitely help," he said, starting to answer his cousin's questions. "Especially if you combine it with other forms of healing," he added on. He was starting to wonder if Void would benefit from some kind of therapy. His injuries were the mental kind and therapy was great for that, especially if it was combined with herb treatments. Would Void be open to that sort of thing? He could make the suggestion. That way Void would be aware of it at least.
"I'm sorry to hear that you're having nightmares every night. That can really mess with your health," Casi said. Void gave a shrug and a nod. His gaze had drifted back down to the earth. His wolves had gone a little ways off, noses to the ground, pawing at it. "Another form of healing that we can do is therapy. My companion, Duramus, specializes in it," Casi posed the question. Void's eyes stayed at the ground for a few more seconds before he looked back up at Casi. 'What's therapy?' he asked. "It's where you go and talk through your trauma. So, in your case, the kidnapping, and the fire," Casi explained. Void's nose scrunched up immediately at the thought. Well, that was not far off from the reaction Casi had had when he'd first heard about it. It wasn't something that anyone usually volunteered to go do. Why would you want to talk about the worst days of your life? But it had helped Casi and it might help Void too. "It helped me when I went," he said, giving a small smile, "you can always just give it a shot. If you don't like it, then you don't have to come back." Casi had been tempted not to go back after the first session, but he kept at it and it was helping. He hoped that Void would at least entertain the idea. And if so, Casi would go tell Duramus about it to give him a head's up.

Void waited Casi's answers with bated breath. Oh, the things he could do if he had access to herbs... Maybe then he wouldn't have to rely on his sister so much for the bones. He could just poison the animals himself. Was there a herb that helped their bodies decay faster? Now that would be a hard question to ask the Vigilum healer. But he would figure out a way. Sometimes he wished he could hunt like his sister, but he didn't have any of the instinct. His wolves did, sure, but they didn't like to leave his side and when they did hunt, they usually forgot to bring him the body afterward. Perhaps he could also invest some time into training them better. 'Herbs won't cure it completely, but they will definitely help,' this answer made Void feel a bit disappointed. Well, that was no good. What use were herbs if they couldn't cure him? He might as well go the way that he was going then. But then how will you learn about herbs? the question rose up again. He wanted to grumble and groan, but he stifled it. He supposed he could try the herbs, even if they couldn't cure him. If that's what he had to do to get access to herbs and herbal knowledge, then it was a small sacrifice to make. 'Especially if you combine it with other forms of healing,' Casi continued. No, that definitely didn't sound like something Void was interested in. He just wanted the herbs. His gaze drifted back down to the earth, teal voids searching for any sign of the body. Damn this mountain and its many visitors.
'I'm sorry to hear that you're having nightmares every night. That can really mess with your health,' Casi said with sympathy. Void gave a shrug. Sure, it was tough and he was probably losing sleep because of it, but it was just a part of his life now. It had become normal just like everything else. 'Another form of healing that we can do is therapy. My companion, Duramus, specializes in it,' Casi suggested. Void scanned the piece of earth in front of him thoroughly before he looked back up. "What's therapy?" he asked simply. He'd never heard of anything like that before. 'It's where you go and talk through your trauma. So, in your case, the kidnapping, and the fire,' Casi explained to him. The silver bay's nose scrunched as he rejected the idea immediately. No. There was no way he was going to talk about the fire or the kidnapping. He didn't need to talk about it. He'd been through it. And he had no idea how talking about it again was going to help him. It wouldn't change the fact that it had happened. It wouldn't make him forget it so he could stop having nightmares. In fact, it sounded like a great way to make the nightmares worse. He could conjure up something about the events that he'd forgotten and his traitorous brain would snatch onto that and make his nightmares worse.
'It helped me when I went,' Casi said with a small smile. Void quirked a brow briefly, wondering just what Casi needed to go and talk about trauma for. This sunshine-y stallion didn't seem to have anything wrong with him. 'You can always just give it a shot. If you don't like it, then you don't have to come back.' Casi continued. It sounded like the least pleasant experience ever, but he supposed it couldn't be worse than actually going through the fire and the kidnapping again. That and maybe, just maybe, he could manipulate this situation to his advantage. Would Casi teach him herbs if he went to this session? Just one and you'll be good, he told himself. That's all he needed to do. Then he would have access to all of the herb knowledge he could ever want. "If I go, will you teach me about herbs?" he asked, his eyes unblinking. Hopefully this deal could be made.

Casi kept his gaze pinned on Void, silently willing the stallion to take up his offer. Even if he scoffed at the notion of therapy and thought it wouldn't help, it couldn't hurt to try it out. Casi didn't know him well at all, but he didn't want anyone to suffer from nightmares, especially not daily nightmares. That could seriously affect your health. Void did not seem very concerned about it, but it could just be a facade, pretending everything was alright. Casi had done it for a long time now, so he knew what that looked like. It hadn't helped him to do it. It didn't help anyone. All it did was bury the pain deeper inside so it ate away at you. And if it turned out Void didn't like it and it didn't help him, then there was no harm in stopping. Not all healing methods worked for everyone and the same went for therapy. But he had to try it at least once. How else could he know if it helped him? The seconds were ticking away and Casi kept his gaze focused on Void. Void seemed more focused on the ground again, though his expression showed how displeased he was at the therapy suggestion.
Finally, the silver bay stallion broke the silence, 'if I go, will you teach me about herbs?' Casi chuckled a bit at the answer. Well, yes, he would definitely teach him about herbs - and that was regardless of whether or not Void went to therapy. Casi was always happy to teach anyone that was willing to learn. "Of course. Though I'll teach you regardless of whether you go to therapy," he said. As much as he wanted to hold herbs over Void's head until he went to therapy, he couldn't do that in good faith. It was manipulative and didn't sit well with him. "Although, learning herbs will be a lot easier if you get a proper night's sleep. And doing therapy can help with that," he said again, urging Void to consider the option. His gaze had dropped back to the ground again, but when he let out that sigh, Casi knew that he had him. He met his cousin's gaze and watched him nod. 'Fine. I'll go. But you have to teach me everything,' he said. Casi smiled again, softly. "I will," he said, his words a promise. He would teach Void everything that he knew. He was excited to have such an eager student. Void would go far if he knew all of the herbs that Casi knew. And in time, he could probably learn to administer his own treatments if he wanted to and if he still needed them. That would make it easier on him and on the Vigilum as well.

Casi chuckled at Void's suggestion, which Void took as a good sign. He wanted to learn everything there was to learn and if going to therapy would get him to that point, then he would suck it up and go. It would only be for one time and he didn't even have to say anything. He could just stand there silently until this Duramus decided he wasn't worth his time. Then Void wouldn't have to live through any trauma and he'd get the herb training that he needed. It was a win-win, though not for Duramus, given his time would be wasted. No matter. It wasn't Void's problem. 'Of course. Though I'll teach you regardless of whether you go to therapy,' Casi said. Void's eyes narrowed at him. Well, that was even easier yet. Why would Void go to therapy at all then if Casi was going to teach him regardless? He wasn't going to go, then. It would be a waste of everyone's time, so this was the better solution anyway. Now he wouldn't have to worry about any trauma reliving. He could just learn herbs and collect his bones in peace. Except at night... there is no peace at night... He grumbled at himself. Maybe he would just learn how to keep himself awake all of the time. Maybe there was an herb that could do that for him.
'Although, learning herbs will be a lot easier if you get a proper night's sleep. And doing therapy can help with that,' Casi said to him. He scowled, his face dropping to the ground again, though this time it was to avoid Casi's gaze rather than to search for his long-lost corpse. The fact that he couldn't find where said corpse was was proof that his memory wasn't working as good as it should be. He'd both forgotten where it was and forgotten to put a marker on it. It wouldn't do any good for him to try to learn herbs and then have trouble remembering what herb did what and where to find them and what to do with them. It would be a giant waste of time for everyone involved. Casi had a point. Void sighed. Perhaps it would be worth going then. And not being silent either. Getting rid of the nightmares did sound really nice. It could go back to the way it was before all of this had happened. When the four of them had been a happy family with their own space carved out. Where no one would bother them. Where there were no demons or fires or being trapped in a cave with the rapidly rising tide. "Fine. I'll go.
