There was something tremendously frustrating about having a pretty good guess as to the fate of someone you cared about, while being unable to do anything about it. There could hardly be any doubt as to who the culprit must be, something Leifr felt certain had been evident in his father’s tone when the family had discussed the matter after the disappearance had happened. Caelius’ own sire, a monstrous being they had all been warned about growing up, but Caelius most of all. And now the youth who had been the closest thing he had to a brother was most likely in that very monster’s clutches. And what had been done thus far? Nothing. At least, nothing that Leifr had seen. Sure… they didn’t even have solid proof yet, but all things considered… who else could be responsible? As for himself, in truth Leifr had lost count of the number of schemes and wild rescue plans he had come up with over the year and more since Caelius had first vanished. Perhaps he would not have been so quick to discard them as readily… but he had met a fellow herd member of Shadow Canyon whose story had forced Leifr to reconsider rash action. Meeting a three-legged horse had been unexpected. Hearing how the stallion had lost the limb… Leifr could not quite suppress a shudder at the remembrance of Sokka’s tale. He had rushed recklessly in to rescue loved ones, only to nearly lose his life, permanently scarred by the experience… and the family he had tried to rescue still captives of the monstrous Charm.
No, recklessness would avail nothing, clearly. However, sometimes Leifr felt certain that doing nothing was going to drive him completely mad. He wanted to do something. Anything that could get them closer to rescuing Caelius. What that might entail he had no idea, but anything felt better than sitting around doing absolutely nothing.
Which was precisely why the youthful stallion found himself out in the Free Lands. He had no specific plans as to what he might do. Neither, of course, did he have any intention of throwing himself heedlessly into some rash action. He just… needed to move.
At least the thick blanket of snow that had coated the earth underhoof gave him physical exertion to focus on, rather than the thoughts always circling within his cranium. Unsurprisingly, Kular Valley was practically deserted. It was rather early in the day and naturally the piles of snow would discourage a fair few. No doubt he was not completely alone out here, but at least for the moment he could not see anyone else in the vicinity.

Winter's grip was still upon Wild Equines. A fresh coating of snow had fallen across most of the realm, including, of course, the Free Lands where Desoto roamed. Having no place to call home, Desoto just wandered through the various Free Lands, hoping for something interesting to happen but knowing nothing would. He was the most interesting thing about this cursed place. He'd survived six years on his own. He didn't need anyone but himself. The only place he avoided was The Open Plains due to it holding horrible, sad memories for him. There was where his mother had abandoned him, tricking him by telling him to lay down in the tall grass and count to ten. She'd said they were playing hide and seek. Only he'd never been able to find her. Desoto knew now that his mother had abandoned him but it had been so so terrifying as a young boy, wondering what had happened to his mother. And then wondering what he'd done wrong to make her want to abandon him. He'd cried but in the end, he'd carried on. Freshly weaned, the colt had taken care of himself from then on. He was honestly surprised he wasn't dead. To his knowledge, he didn't have any family. At least not that he'd ever met. His mother had not had a good relationship with her family or something. She always said her mother didn't like her. Desoto didn't know who his grandmother even was, dead or alive. He supposed he must have some sort of relatives running around Wild Equines with the way his mother supposedly whored around - even if it was just with two men. Or one man. Desoto wasn't really sure anymore. His mother had been very confusing. Once a momma's boy, Desoto now never wanted to see his mother again. He was angry at her. Bitter. How dare she leave him? He'd needed her. Needed anyone. But instead, he'd been abandoned and left to rot. Well, he'd really showed her, huh? Here he was, still alive and kicking, trudging through the knee-deep snow with the winter's morning sun shining down upon him and warming his back. Life wasn't great, but it was okay. He was livable. He would make it through another winter, alone, and be better off for it. What were they going to do about getting Caelius back safe and sound? If suspicions were correct, Leifr had heard enough growing up to know that Carnallust the Charmer was a horrifying monster. To think of the closest thing he had to a brother in the clutches of such a beast was... upsetting, to say the very least. An understatement of vast proportions, really. Of course, there was always the possibility that it was not Charm who had Caelius and some other terrible fate had befallen him, but there were just so few clues of... anything. It was frustrating. And Leifr truly hated this feeling of complete helplessness in the situation. Even the physical exertion of navigating the snowy terrain of Kular Valley was really not enough to distract his mind from everything roiling about in his mind.
Scanning the snowy terrain around him, it was almost a relief to spot another equine in the vicinity. Although he considered himself not to be the greatest when it came to interacting with strangers, at least it was bound to be a distraction. Hopefully, he would not be the worst company, considering how distracted he felt himself to be by his own grim thoughts. Turning his steps in the direction of the other stallion, Leifr pitched a whinny to reach the stranger in order to warn of his approach, halting only once he was within conversational range.
'Chilly day, isn't it? I don't mind it too much while trying to get through all this snow, at least,' he remarked to the stranger, adding, 'I'm Leifr, by the way.' Character;; Leifr Tagged;; fleabittengray w/Desoto Notes;; Sorry for the wait! Timeline;; 4 years old, mid-winter, early morning

x DESOTO Winter sucked, and so did snow. He was in a bad mood as he marched through Kular Valley, but despite his annoyance at the weather, Desoto had his ears perked so he really could not blame the stranger for approaching him randomly. He probably looked pretty approachable at the moment. His jaw clenched briefly, a subtle twitch of a muscle, and then he relaxed it and offered a polite but mostly disinterested smile as the other stallion approached him with a whinny. Desoto came to a halt, brown eyes looking over the figure of the other hellion. He wasn't someone that Desoto knew, but then again, he didn't know many horses despite having lived here in Wild Equines all of his life. 'Chilly day, isn't it? I don't mind it too much while trying to get through all this snow, at least,' At the mention of snow and the chill in the air, Desoto grunted. "I ain't a fan of snow. Or the cold." It was a blunt answer which could easily come across as rude but, well, that was Desoto for you. 'I'm Leifr, by the way.' Wasn't a name he's ever heard before, either. "Hi. I'm Desoto." And then he said nothing more, just staring at the other and wondering if he would attempt to continue the conversation or not. Indi w/ Leifr 222 | ProfileSo sorry for the wait!
