So much change had come and, quite frankly, there were some changes that Elina was not particularly happy about. That her Uncle Zephyr was gone in particular. Even if… something had happened. Something bad. Elina was vaguely aware that her beloved uncle had been involved with or done something awful, but none had ever told her what exactly had happened. All she knew was that a great many of her remaining kin were disappointed in Uncle Zeph… or even angry at him. Elina did not understand and dearly wished that things could go back to the way they used to be.
They weren’t even in Lachlan Breck anymore.
She didn’t hate The Howling Keep, but it didn’t feel like home. Not yet, at least. She felt homesick for Lachlan Breck, even though her father had explained a few times now that the move had been necessary. Lachlan Breck had been invaded so many times by enemies… it was abundantly obvious that it simply was no longer a viable home. Especially for a Dark Royal herd. To remain so vulnerable was folly.
That didn’t stop Elina from deeply missing the land of her birth.
Or missing Uncle Zeph.
There was someone else Elina had been missing. It had been a while since last she had seen Hymn. Which, considering he lived in The Highlands and his mother led the Versai, made such a fact hardly surprising. They could not have come from more different backgrounds. He of Versai and Utopia, while her own lineage was steeped in Dark Alliance and Underworld connections. Particularly on her father’s side, though the name of her mother’s father was likely still familiar to many in equine society.
None of that had mattered to Elina when first she had met Hymn. As far as she had been concerned at the time, he had been a new friend that Uncle Zeph had wanted her and her father to take care of. And even if Hymn hadn’t been happy at first with his circumstances, in time she felt as though they’d been good friends. She missed showing him all her favorite spots in the corner of Lachlan Breck where they had been given relatively free rein to play and explore. She missed talking with him. Seeing him every day.
No doubt he had been very glad when the day came that he was allowed to go back to his home. And she did not begrudge him that. She knew she would be devastated if someone were to take her away from her family. She just… missed the way things had been. Which was selfish, no doubt. But outside of her family, Hymn was probably the best friend she’d ever had. And it had been such a long time since last she had seen him, which was hard after having spent every day with her friend. Elina glanced over her shoulder, aware of her father’s protective presence as always. Even though she was at an age where most would expect independence, Elina had long ago come to terms with the fact that her father was unlikely to let her fly from the nest any time soon Considering all he had lost over the years, she really could not blame him. Perhaps it helped that at least one element in her life remained the same, even while all else seemed determined to change.
Iosis Lake had remained more or less the same as well, which Elina appreciated. She had many fond memories of splashing in the gentle waters, her father keeping watch. Sometimes she had convinced him to come play with her. Sometimes she’d had one or more of Kida’s family to play with. Sometimes her cousin, Tristan. Maybe soon she’d be able to introduce Cora’s new babies to Iosis Lake. The thought drew a smile to her lips, even as she drew closer to the lakeshore. I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist His life had been quite interesting, and it proved to just be becoming all the more interesting. Stolen as a child by the Dark Kingdom, having lived for several weeks in Lachlan Breck, Hymn had met a girl his age there. They had talked and played every day that he was held captive. He'd not been treated cruelly, in fact, they had all been quite kind to him - all things considered. He had even cried, privately, when his mother and brother couldn't see him, when he'd had to leave Elina and go back to Lyrarcor. She had been his first friend outside of the Highlands, with no Versai connections. She was his best friend, more or less, or at least... she had been, during those times. But then, they had not seen each other at all, not until a chance encounter here in Iosis Lake back in the early fall. And now here they were, approaching the summer months, and Hymn wanted nothing more than to march to The Howling Keep where she now lived and ask to speak with her. He just missed her, was all... He missed his friend. She may be aligned with the Dark Kingdom or with the Underworld or whatever, but she was not evil. She was his friend. And he feared what may happen, should they two of them have their friendship found out. Would it be used against them? He would not put it past the Underworld but Rasa... she wouldn't do that... would she? Hymn didn't realize that he'd started to grind his teeth until his jaw started to ache. The spotted youth had to force himself to unclench his jaw, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. Everything, everyone, in Wild Equines was so tense these days, but he did not blame them for it. War was chaos. War was dangerous. He was sure his services would be needed sooner rather than later. He was a Nephilim, after all, and with the Underworld involved in the war, along with the Helkaer, he was sure of there being plenty of Cambions out and about causing havoc for the rest of mortality. And it was his job to cure those that became infected... it had always been his fate. His destiny. He'd known that nearly from the second he'd been born. So what if it left him feeling restless, knowing his fate was sealed from the moment he was conceived? He was not the type to try and resist, especially when it came to helping others. Besides... Valfrid would kill him if he did something stupid like run away. Or go to the Keep to meet with Elina, which was exactly why he'd never gone to see her, and why he wouldn't now, during wartimes. It would not be safe for either of them. Yet still, hope (or was it desperation) brought him out to the Free Lands on this warm spring day, late in the season, insects buzzing around him. He had to whip them away with his tail more often than he would have liked. Hymn was hoping to see Elina here, in Iosis Lake, just like that day many months ago. But he wouldn't be so lucky... would he? Luck was rarely ever on his side. He could see the lake in the distance now, with a few equines mingling or standing alone by the shore. He was still too far away to get a clear view of anyone, and the scents were all so mixed together that it was impossible still for him to pick up on any in particular. A soft breeze tugged at her mane and Elina paused for a moment, enjoying the sensation. The season was clearly revealing how close summer was, warm as it was, and the breeze was quite refreshing in contrast. No doubt as the season progressed, the need to go splashing in Iosis Lake would be more pressing. For now, however, Elina was content enough just to meander and observe other equines going about their day. Especially the foals, playing with other youngsters or with their parents. She was more child than an adult just yet at a little over two years of age, but with everything that had been going on... she felt old. Or at least, really rather worn down by it all. It seemed a lifetime ago that she could truly enjoy herself with the carefree abandon that young children had. Or Kida. She wondered sometimes how Kida could still remain so completely joyous and at ease, as if nothing was the matter.
Gaze continuing to rove across Iosis Lake, trying to forget at least for a few moment the stresses and worries that seemed to be piling up more and more these days, Elina wished that things could go back to the simplicity of her childhood. It had been so much easier, being little. Of course, she had always worried a little for her father, who had worn a cloak of deepest sorrow for the entirety of her life. She knew now that it was because he grieved the loss of her mother and so many others in his life, but as an infant, all she had known was that he was very sad and had done everything in her power to cheer him up whenever possible.
Suddenly, she halted in her meandering steps, blue eyes lighting up at a familar figure she glimpsed. He was not quite on the other side of the Lake, near enough for her to recognize his spotted frame, especially with the breeze in her favour. But far enough that he might not have immediately seen or recognized her. Without the slightest instant of hesitation, she broke into a swift lope to close the distance. Nearing him, she whickered a cheerful greeting. Perhaps others would say they were supposed to be on opposite sides. Whether or not that was true, outside of her family Hymn was the closest friend she'd ever had and she could not deny the thrill that went through her just at the sight of him.
'Hello Hymn,' she greeted, warm smile curving her lips. 'I hope you have been well?' Character;; Elina Tagged;; fleabittengray w/Heaven's Hymn Notes;; <3 Timeline;; 2 yrs; late spring, midday, beginning of the war

I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist Hymn had quite a heritage. His mother was the retired High Priestess of the Versai, and his father the former and current Lord of Utopia. It was blasphemy for him to have befriended a girl in the Dark Kingdom, who lived in the Royal lands nonetheless, but was it really so bad? It complicated things, sure, but Hymn had simply decided not to worry about it. It wasn't like Valfrid was planning to launch an attack on The Howling Keep anytime soon or something! So Hymn didn't have to worry about meeting Elina on the battlefield, for example, but as much as they'd used to play fight, he could never truly hurt her. She was too special to him, too much of a close friend. He didn't want to compare his relationship with Elina to the one Xovad had with Nixi, because it made him feel weird to think that way, but at least he could say he understood why Xovad had been so distraught when Nixi had exiled the Sisterhood from the Light Kingdom. He hated that he no longer had much contact with his friend. It left a void inside of him that he couldn't quite explain. Needless to say, when he heard the familiar nicker calling out to him, he perked right up and let out a shrill squeal of delight once he spotted the other equine. His face lit up with a smile and he reared up onto his hind legs, playfully kicking his front limbs through the air. Upon landing, he trotted up to her to help close the rest of the distance between them, reaching out his muzzle to affectionately touch it to her cheek once they were close enough. 'Hello Hymn,' She greeted him warmly and Hymn felt all his worries melt away. 'I hope you have been well?' He gave a nod, because it was true, he'd been pretty good. It was just chaotic in general. "Yeah, I've been okay. Valfrid is finally a full Versai Brother. Mom retired... and I have a little sister now, her name is Dahlia," he said, feeling like he was rambling but unable to help it due to his excitement. "What about you? How are things over in your neck of the woods? Anything interesting to report?" he asked, hoping she wasn't offended or would think he was trying to get news to bring back to the Highlands. Honestly, Hymn could care less about this war. He just wanted his friend back in his life. Was it wrong to have a friend like Hymn? Elina supposed that there were plenty both in and out of her home herd who would be highly critical of such a friendship. Well... maybe not if it was all a ploy to manipulate and use someone with the kind of connections Hymn had. Except that was definitely not a factor in how she felt about Hymn. She genuinely considered him her very best friend and would never dream of using him the way others of her alliance might suggest she do. Nor would she ever want to hurt him in any way, shape, or form. Which made this whole war situation rather... anxiety-inducing.
But no, she was not going to think about any of the unpleasant possibilities that might exist and could potentially come to pass. She was especially not going to ruin this lovely day and this marvellous opportunity to see her best friend with fearful thoughts that maybe would not even be feasible after all.
Hopefully everything was going to be just fine.
Instead, her focus zeroed in on Hymn as he heard her call. The inky damsel could not help the grin to spread across her maw just at the way he perked right up, nor the squeal of delight to escape him. She gave a little hop-skip, excited to see him and grinning at the playful way he had reared up to kick his front limbs out before trotting forth to help close the distance between them. Returning the affectionate touch of his muzzle to her cheek in much the same manner, she felt so much better in spite of previously grim thoughts.
"Yeah, I've been okay. Valfrid is finally a full Versai Brother. Mom retired... and I have a little sister now, her name is Dahlia," Hymn reported and she smiled brightly, nodding a little as she absorbed all his news. Not because she had any interest in carrying tales back to the Dark Alliance, but simply because she was interested in Hymn's life. And even if she could not quite be a constant part of his day-to-day life as had been the case when he had been staying in Lachlan Breck with her, at least this still gave her the chance to be part of things vicariously, if only through knowing about what was going on in his life.
'Wow, I guess things have been pretty busy for your family!' she noted with a laugh. 'Must be a little strange to have things change like that. I hope retirement is treating your mom well? Must be odd for her especially, since... wasn't she part of the Versai for a long time?' She was pretty sure she remembered hearing that, even if she could not remember when or from whom. At the very least, his mom had been a Versai longer than they had been a live and that certainly seemed like a long time. Her eyes lit up at mention of a little sister. Elina was pretty sure that she was never going to get a baby sister of her own, but there were lots of other little ones to "adopt" as little siblings, so she did not let the lack bother her. 'Aww, babies are so cute! My...' She paused a moment, invisible brow furrowing as she tried to think of the right word... After all, Cora was essentially family, but they were not technically related by blood as far as she knew. Shrugging, a giggle escaping her, she amended, 'Kida's daughter, Cora, had two babies.'
Elina was not at all offended when Hymn started asking her a few questions. Just as she would never dream of using these chats to "gather intel" about the Highlands or Versai or anything related to Hymn's family, equally true was the fact that she trusted Hymn to feel the same way. True, there were a couple things that maybe she was not allowed to talk about, but she was sure that the reverse was true as well. They might not have any personal secrets between them, but there were other secrets that were not their own and thus could not be shared. "What about you? How are things over in your neck of the woods? Anything interesting to report?"
Considering his inquiry for a moment, she answered, 'Well, as I mentioned, Cora had a couple babies only a little while back that we visit here in Iosis Lake from time to time. I wonder if Kida is going to have any more... Kyrin is getting so grown up! I don't know if anything interesting has been happening. Everybody seems to be really tense... well, everybody except Kida, of course.' Shaking her head slightly, she noted, 'I don't know how she does it... but I think the world might just be a better place if everyone could be at least a little bit like Kida.' I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist Did Hymn feel bad keeping Elina a secret from his family, never being quite honest about what his trips to the Free Lands sometimes meant (meeting with her in secrecy)? Well, yeah. He wasn't outright lying, just not being honest by omitting information that might be otherwise considered useful and important. But the thing is, Hymn had no desire to get Elina involved in the war. It was bad enough she lived in the Keep! The Dark Kingdom was, more of less, aligned with the Underworld (as far as he knew, anyway) and while the Versai in general were not picking sides just yet, Valfrid was aligned with the Utopians. How could he not be, given that he was a Utopia Seer and Cadence was like a father to him? It was so complicated. Hymn honestly thought this war was useless, but he couldn't just come right out and say that. Maybe he would change his mind later on but... for now, he was just going to try to enjoy his time spent with his best friend. She was so sweet and lovely as she greeted him in return. Hymn felt his skin warm beneath her touch and he could not help the bit of a goofy smile that spread across his face. Elina had always brought him such a sense of comfort, from the moment they met, she had just been welcoming and kind. No judgement from her, not even with him being a Nephilim aligned with the Versai. She treated like he was just... Hymn. And her bright smile when he mentioned him having a sister now made him feel all the more cheerful. She was just so nice to him and made him feel normal but also special, at the same time, somehow, if that made any sense. 'Wow, I guess things have been pretty busy for your family!' She laughed and the boy found himself chuckling as well, nodding along to her statement. Busy, indeed! 'Must be a little strange to have things change like that. I hope retirement is treating your mom well? Must be odd for her especially, since... wasn't she part of the Versai for a long time?' Another nod at her question, though he spoke as well. "Oh, yeah, totally! She's been a part of the Versai since... like... forever. Literally. I think she first started living in the Highlands when the Sisterhood first formed or something like that. Pretty cool, honestly, if ya ask me!" Of course, being just over 2 and a half years old, it would seem like forever to him. He was still so young. So innocent, in a way. A bit naive, too, despite trying not to be. 'Aww, babies are so cute! My...' A slight pause, Hymn's ears perking forward to listen intently. 'Kida's daughter, Cora, had two babies.' Kida and Cora! Mares he hadn't seen in so long, it felt like. He smiled at the memory of them. Especially Kida! "Aw, congrats to Cora and the babies! I hope all is well with them?" He honestly couldn't imagine two babies at the same time, though. Dahlia was rambunctious enough on her own! At his question about anything interesting happening, Elina took a moment before responding. 'Well, as I mentioned, Cora had a couple babies only a little while back that we visit here in Iosis Lake from time to time. I wonder if Kida is going to have any more... Kyrin is getting so grown up! I don't know if anything interesting has been happening. Everybody seems to be really tense... well, everybody except Kida, of course.' A bit of laughed left his lips and he smiled fondly at the memory of Kida. From what he remembered as a kid, she had been... well, like a big kid herself! Joyful and playful and always willing to play - or, even better, dance! She was carefree and just absolutely lovely. 'I don't know how she does it... but I think the world might just be a better place if everyone could be at least a little bit like Kida.' His features softened slightly and his smile grew more fond. "Aw man, I miss Kida! I remember her being so much fun." He sighed a little, soft and quiet, the memories of his time being stolen playing through his head for a moment. "I wish it wouldn't be so complicated, if I just... showed up in the Keep to say hello," he admitted quietly, pouting. "Politics and war makes things so darn complicated, man! Can't we all just... get along?" It might have surprised Elina, at least to some degree, to learn that Hymn kept these meetings of theirs a secret from his family. Were she to think about it, of course, she would understand. Given their backgrounds and the war and everything… it was not exactly the kind of friendship that would likely be encouraged. Even in times of peace, there would likely be… issues in the minds of some. It just never had occurred to Elina that there was anything about their friendship that required secrecy. Hymn had come to her home – albeit not of his own free will – and Uncle Zephyr had charged her with keeping him company while he was here. At the time, she had been much too young to truly understand the concept of a steal and what that meant for her new friend. All she had known was that he had been sad and she had done her best to cheer him up. And, in the process of cheering him up, showing him all her favourite nooks and crannies of the corner of Lachlan Breck that Hymn had been restricted to, Elina had made a lasting friendship.
Her father knew, obviously, though he never spoke about it.
Hymn’s smile swept such thoughts aside and she could feel her own smile growing. Blue eyes sparkled, pleased to have this chance to visit with her best friend, despite everything else that was going on.
Harks pressed forward attentively as he spoke about the changes in his family. She could guess how busy his family must be with a new baby to look after. Kida made raising babies look easy, but Elina had observed enough equines in her couple years of life to know that not everyone managed it as effortlessly as the most maternal figure in her life.
Add to that the changes coming about with Hymn’s mother no longer holding the rank she’d had for as long as Elina could remember… She wondered what that was like for Hymn. Attentive, she smiled as he nodded, saying, ”Oh, yeah, totally! She’s been a part of the Versai since… like… forever. Literally. I think she first started living in the Highlands when the Sisterhood first formed or something like that. Pretty cool, honestly, if ya ask me!”
Sapphire pools alight, Elina nodded in agreement, ’That is pretty cool indeed!’ Her own family had quite a history tied to both the Dark throne and the Underworld, even if the most direct ties were no longer present. It was not something she thought much about, admittedly, but it was pretty cool to think about the history of these lands they lived in and know of ways they were connected to it all.
Elina could not help grinning at the smile Hymn wore upon mention of Kida and Cora; obviously especially Kida, who had joined them often enough whilst Hymn had been residing briefly in Lachlan Breck. ”Aw, congrats to Cora and the babies! I hope all is well with them?”
Nodding, the inky damsel answered, ’I think it can get a bit busy for Cora sometimes, especially living so far from all of us, but they seem to be doing really well.’ She giggled, adding, ’As busy as the twins are, I bet she’s glad she wasn’t like her older sister, Kalani, who had quadruplets.’
There was clear fondness in Hymn’s expression as he said, ”Aw man, I miss Kida! I remember her being so much fun.”
Nodding in agreement that Kida was undoubtedly fun, Elina noted, ’Kida misses you too.’ Hesitating only a moment, she added, ’If you wanted… we could probably figure out a time for visiting in the Free Lands with Kida?’ As much as she thought it was an idea that would thrill the gentle matron, Elina found herself dealing with a feeling she could not quite define at the notion of sharing her time with Hymn.
A little sigh from the speckled youth immediately captured Elina’s attention, but she did not interrupt when he said, ”I wish it wouldn’t be so complicated, if I just… showed up in the Keep to say hello.” The admission was accompanied by a bit of a pout as he concluded, ”Politics and war makes things so darn complicated, man! Can’t we all just… get along?”
When Hymn had left Lachlan Breck to return back to his family in Lyrarcor, Elina had asked her father a similar question. Well, it had started more with her wondering why he couldn’t stay and have his family come join him instead of Hymn having to leave. He had explained the complicated entanglement of politics and alliances, but Elina still questioned why any and all of it was necessary. At first, he had been the sad boy that her Uncle Zephyr had asked her to look out for while he stayed in Lachlan Breck. And after that, she had never seen Hymn as anything except her friend. It seemed incomprehensible that others could not seem to do the same.
Nodding slowly, she agreed, ’All the complicatedness… seems so silly. If everyone could just get along, surely everything would be better?’ A soft laugh escaping her, she concluded, ’ Again… if everyone could just be even a little bit like Kida, seems like the world would be a better place.’ Character;; Elina Tagged;; fleabittengray w/Heaven's Hymn Notes;; <3 Timeline;; 2 yrs; late spring, midday; beginning of the war.

I'm gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist Everything was so complicated, with no end in sight of things getting any easier. Why couldn't he just go to The Howling Keep to see Elina when he wanted to, instead of sneaking around and planning meetings in the Free Lands? He doubted it would go well, though, but why? Because he was a Versai aligned Nephilim? Was that his "crime?" He'd never done anything to harm the Dark Kingdom! He'd never hurt anyone, ever. He'd never been in a real fight before, but he'd sparred with his mom and Valfrid numerous times. Lirana, too, but she wasn't much of a fighter, not like his mom and Valfrid. Hymn wasn't sure what his thoughts were on fighting. He knew it was important, because his father was Lord of Utopia, his mom a former Versai High Priestess, and his brother was the Versai Druid. Even without doing anything, Hymn had a target on his back simply by existing. He didn't want to burden anyone without his woes, however. Not even Elina. But sometimes he wished he could really open up to her about that, to finally be honest about how heavy of a weight was on his shoulders - basically from the day he was born. Would Elina understand? Probably not, not completely, but she wouldn't judge him for it, either. He knew that. She was kind and compassionate, always had been. She'd made his stay in Lachlan Breck feel safe, even though he was living amongst the enemies at the time. He had even, at the very beginning, considered Elina an enemy. He had been stubborn at first, not wanting to become friends, but in the end he couldn't resist. She had always been kind to him, even from the start. She was just a good soul in general. Hymn was glad he hadn't stayed stubborn the entire time and that they'd eventually become friends, even if maintaining that friendship was tricky. ’That is pretty cool indeed!’ Her blue eyes seemed so bright and the youth smiled back at her, his dark amber optics gleaming with delight. "Mom's always been cool, at least for as long as I've known her," he chuckled, thinking back to their history lessons and sparring lessons and just hearing about all the cool stuff she'd seen and done throughout her lifetime. "I hope I'm able to be at least half as cool as she is." And half as kind as Elina was, but he didn't want to sound cheesy or anything by saying that. His feet shuffled a little and he glanced away, though the sight of her blue, blue eyes remained in his mind. He loved Elina's eyes. They were so pretty. ’I think it can get a bit busy for Cora sometimes, especially living so far from all of us, but they seem to be doing really well.’ Elina giggled and Hymn looked back at her, grinning handsomely. ’As busy as the twins are, I bet she’s glad she wasn’t like her older sister, Kalani, who had quadruplets.’ And at that news, his eyes went wide and his jaw popped open, seeming completely flabbergasted by the idea of quadruplets. "I didn't even know that was possible!" he blurted out, and then felt stupid because wasn't that something he should know at his age? He cleared his throat, tail swishing away a fly that landed on him, and his weight shifted from one side to the other. "I mean... well, I'm hoping all is well with Kalani and the quads?" He tried to sound more neutral and now like his entire mind was blown at the idea of four babies coming out of one mare. Geez, his mother had seemed to struggle with just one at a time! He did not envy mares their ability to carry and birth foals. He did not want any part of that. ’Kida misses you too.’ There was a moment of hesitation, and then Elina was adding, ’If you wanted… we could probably figure out a time for visiting in the Free Lands with Kida?’ Hymn's ears perked forward again, contemplating the idea. "Do you think she'd, like... tell anyone?" he asked awkwardly, frowning slightly. "Like... your King or Queen? I don't want you guys getting into any trouble cuz of me..." he trailed off with a sigh, hanging his head because yet again, a happy moment was becoming complicated. ’All the complicatedness… seems so silly. If everyone could just get along, surely everything would be better?’ He nodded, though he knew a day like that would never come. No one was ever going to get the Versai and Helkaer to see eye to eye, for instance, let alone all the different Kingdoms and the Afterlife. ’Again… if everyone could just be even a little bit like Kida, seems like the world would be a better place.’Hymn couldn't help but chuckle alongside his friend, his head lifting with a grin back in place. "We definitely need more Kidas in the world!" he agreed with a nod. "Maybe after the war is over and things settle down, we can meet up again with Kida in tow?"
