After months of guilt eating her alive, Madame Misfit was seriously contemplating the pros and cons of turning herself in. It was not often that remorse for a killing bothered her so much, given her efforts to ensure that her kills did not deserve to draw another breath in this world. At least, back when she had hunted alone she had made every effort to seek out prey that deserved to die. True, sometimes inadvertently she had ended up somewhere that risked innocent lives, but she had never killed in such places, unless some evil villain turned up for her to end, such as that occasion when she had met that scarred stallion, Decay. She shivered. Undoubtedly the silver dapple stallion would end her now as a villain, if he knew what she had done. If the Versai found out, there would be no mercy, no matter what her background history with the Sisterhood might be. No doubt Trinity herself would give the killing blow, if the buckskin Sister knew the truth. Knew who it was that had killed the mare called Afterglow. The former Light King's mother. The current Light Queen's grandmother. The new Light King's great-grandmother.
Giving herself an inward shake, head tossing slightly to free blue eyes from her flaxen forelock, Mae cast a glance at her surroundings. The beach seemed mercifully empty at present, though with the guilt that had been stalking her of late, the temptation to hunt one of her own kind had lessened a little. No doubt the Underworld would exert its control again sooner or later, but for now, the predator was silent. She could not recall the last time the predator had been silent... not since before meeting Maiko. If she were to be completely honest, the dunalino would have to admit that spending time in the bay stallion's company had not likely done her any favours. Or him, for that matter. Assessing things now, she could acknowledge that he was a bad influence on her, just as she was a bad influence on him. But it felt good not to be alone, to know that someone else felt the same unnatural thirst for the lifeblood of fellow equines. To be accepted for the predator that lurked under her skin, to have that part of her in particular appeal to another... no matter how wrong it was, still... it was nice.
Much as Mae would have liked to think she could put her hoof down and bring an end to the whole thing, make it so they stopped hunting and reformed themselves into better members of society... she knew herself incapable of such a thing. She doubted she could even make herself stop spending time with him, even if it did lead to hunting others of their own kind. Turning herself in, warning the Versai of what lurked in the Free Lands without much concern over who the victim might be, would have been the best thing to do. However, there was a single, simple reason Mae knew that she could never bring herself to do such a thing. Valentina Misfit. She had a sneaking suspicion that turning herself in would be viewed as betrayal by the Underworld and then Val would suffer a horrible death. Much as she hated what had happened, what kept happening, what she knew would undoubtedly happen in the future... she just could not allow her twin to come to harm, no matter what. Which left her pacing the shoreline of Femiet Beach, trying to stifle the overwhelming sense of guilt, desperately longing for the simplicity of her childhood.
