TW: mention of murder, blood, injury, and trauma
The high from the raid on Eacarrah was still coursing through her veins as she returned to Toxin Raj. She smelled of smoke, blood, and victory. Eacarrah, and its leader Gavin would not surely forget their debt to Sly any time soon. She had promised upon her departure that she would continue to inflict pain and suffering upon the herd until they repaid the Helkaer what they owed them. The snow was still thick here in Toxin Raj as she descended down the bank of the ravine. She was headed to declare her triumphant victory to her mother, Aislinn who had recently returned home. Nemesis noted the unusual silence of her home as she wandered deeper into her home, it was the same sort of silence one encountered when in the midst of a predator. The bay Private narrowed her eyes and slowed her approach to scan the territory around her. Her ash stained nares flared in the darkness beneath the light of the full moon to try and capture any scent of danger.
Nemesis did not detect much at first, but the longer she remained and observed the more she began to noticed the scent of iron. Her eyes snapped in the direction the wind was blowing and she began to follow the stench that the breeze carried to her. The deeper she went, the more quiet it seemed to get. There was only the crisp sound of her hooves slicing through the snow. Vapor escaped her nares as she stalked her home, her domain. A predator surely had been here by the way the creatures in the trees were still. It was as if they were hung in suspense of the moment. Nemesis did not think to call out for Aislinn in case there was an intruder skulking around Toxin Raj. Finally, she spotted her first splotches of thick red blood upon the white snow.
Her gaze followed the splotch to larger and large pools until she spotted a figure lying in a large pool of blood. There was so much blood. Nemesis felt a prickle light up inside her somewhere as she took in the smells once more. Aislinn's scent was thickly mixed with iron here. Her heart began to race and the high from her raid dissipated quickly. Something was very wrong, and another thick scent mingled in the air. Nemesis approached the silhouette lying on it's side in the moonlight. Her hooves cutting through portions of the crimson liquid that stained the ground of her home. Once she was close enough to identify the equine, she could tell right away who it was.
Aislinn was dead, horribly maimed by an unknown assailant. Nemesis could feel a rage boiling deep inside her and she let out a terrifying howl. The sound was caught somewhere between rage and agony. The call echoed through the barren trees, and announced the tragedy. Her mother had been murdered. Aislinn had been ambushed while the rest of them had been away. Nemesis knew instantly that this had to be related to the nerfarious deeds her mother had been up to while she was away. She alluded to imprisoning someone but did not say who.
She didn't even say what alliance they came from, only the horrible things they had done to them. In her rage, Nemesis cast her feral gaze upon the bloodied tracks leading away from her mother's body. There was a set in the snow. At least two equines, and one pair she could not place. A non-equine companion that was also not a wolf. One of her guards came and found her at the grisly scene and she turned her feral gaze upon them. "Alert the herd. Go now! Attack all intruders on sight!" The private barked out at him with a ferocity that the guard had not seen before. He merely nodded and was swiftly off.
Nemesis turned and went swiftly into the night. She stalked out of Toxin Raj with a ravenous persistence. She memorized the stench that the intruders had left throughout her home. She traced the bloodied tracks as far as they went, and then she began to follow clean tracks as the blood tapered off. Though it could have been hours ago, Nemesis did not stop. Her exhaustion swelled with each step she toook, and each hour that passed as she doggedly tracked the assailants through the night. Nemesis stopped only when dawn broke on the horizon, and the footfalls tapered off near the border of the Light Kingdom.
The bay mare stood in the early light of dawn atop a small hill that overlooked one of the lands of the Light Kingdom. Her gaze narrowed again as she whispered a promise into dawn. "You will know only suffering, pain, and retribution soon enough"
