There were times that Xanthus felt decades older than his actual two years of life. His young shoulders felt burdened down by cares and he did not know who to turn to for help. Not his mother, because in truth, she was one of the reasons he worried as much as he did. Not his older sister, who was another he worried about. The distant relationship between his mother and sister distressed him, but he was not sure how it had happened or why. Neither did the unfortunate lad have any idea of how to fix it. He tried to be there for both as much as possible, but he was not sure it helped. Of course, there were a lot of times that Mother was not available. Out searching for the missing members of their family, brothers he had never met, but had heard enough about that he felt almost certain that he would recognize them if ever he saw any of them. If they still lived... which he suspected his mother deeply feared that was not the case. He knew that fear burdened her greatly. Too young to be out searching himself, Xanthus tried to talk with every available adult within Dark Woods about his missing brothers, hoping that maybe somebody who could be out there looking could help Mother find them.
Though... it was not as if his family were the only ones with missing members. There were the sisters, Emilee and Andee, whose deaf sister had gone missing. There were the missing twins, Garrick and Lissette.. though recently the battered duo had returned, clearly having suffered during what must have been a horrible captivity. Even their leader and her family had been missing for a while, though, like Garrick and Lissette, they had returned... but not without evidence of terrible torment. Maybe there were others, though he had not specifically heard of any others. Still, for so many equines to all go missing from the same herd -- not to mention his own missing brothers -- seemed an awful lot. Why did it happen? Was there anything that could be done to make it stop happening? Would they ever find any of those who were still missing?
Too many unpleasant questions and no answers, good or bad.
As if all that were not awful enough, there was the other bad thing. Namely, that Mother had lost two babies. Never in his life would Xanthus forget the absolute anguish to overwhelm his mother. The look in her eyes... even just remembering sent a chill down his spine. That kind of pain had no words to describe it. And it was another thing that Xanthus could do nothing to fix. No matter how much he wanted to help, no matter how desperate he was to make things better for his family... there was nothing he could do.
And that, above all else, was a burden that threatened to crush the poor lad. Character;; Xanthus Tagged;; fleabittengray w/Tarot Notes;; Sibling thread? Timeline;; 2 yrs; mid-winter, late morning.

x TAROT Winter was the worst season to ever exist. She hated everything to do with winter. The cold, the snow, the lack of food and water too frozen to drink. Winter always, without a doubt, put her in a foul mood and made her most unreasonable. Tarot was a summer girl. She missed sunbathing, and going swimming, and dancing across the sands of the beaches in the Free Lands full of joy. She was known for being carefree, but that all left in the winter. The colder it got, the grumpier the red dun sabino got. Thankfully today, it was no too terribly could, but it was cold enough that she was shivering and still in quite a bitter mood. She was debating going out for a visit somewhere warmer than Dark Woods, perhaps Nomalanga, which had always been such a fascinating place to her. She did not mind the humidity. However, it was not always the smartest of ideas to go to places like that alone. Perhaps she could convince someone to come along with her to the Free Lands today. But first, she had to find someone, hopefully someone that wouldn't mind her being a bit of a grumpus for the journey. As the morning progressed, approaching closer to noon, Tarot began to wander through her home. She decided that the first equine that she spotted, she was going to drag them along with her on an adventure of sorts. By chance, as her luck would have it, the first horse she spotted was her own brother. Xanthus was a bit younger than her, but that didn't bother her. He was still her brother. Managing a bit of a smile, Tarot whinnied out to him to get his attention. To close the rest of the distance between them, she trotted, her long legs carrying her over to the younger equine at which point she came to a halt. She gave herself a brisk shake, blinking lazily at the younger equine. "Hey. Whatcha doin'?" she asked, and before he even would have time to reply, she was asking her next question. "Wanna go on an adventure with me? Pretty please?"Indi w/ Xanthus 360 | ProfileSorry for the wait! <3 3 years 3 months, mid-winter, late morning

Xanthus could not have said how much time passed whilst he brooded, worrying over all the things he could not seem to change. He tried to distract himself a few times, with varying degrees of success. A chat with Chantelle helped him feel at least momentarily better... until she left for the Free Lands with her father and Amberlynn.
Albeit, he was pretty sure it was not Amber's idea. He had been around enough to pick up on the fact that the quiet black overo damsel preferred not to be out socializing. She always seemed so sad... but Xanthus had yet to approach the older equine and offer friendship. Considering all the worries he had for members of his own family already, maybe adding a friend burdened by sadness for reasons he did not know was not the best idea anyway.
Investigating trails in the snow had been briefly amusing, but depressing thoughts always caught up to him no matter what. He wished he could have gone with Mama when she went out earlier that morning to continue the search for his brothers as she had every day for as long as he could remember. However, any time he asked, she had told him no and he highly doubted that was going to change any time soon.
A whinny pulled Xanthus from his thoughts and he turned, a broad grin pulling at his lips as he spotted Tarot. He took a few steps to help close the distance, relieved to have the distraction from his thoughts, but also eager for the opportunity to spend time with a member of his family. Grullo-dipped harks pricked attentively towards his sister as she queried, "Hey. Whatcha doin'?" Xanthus had barely managed more of a shrug before Tarot was continuing, without giving him opportunity to reply, "Wanna go on an adventure with me? Pretty please?"
As if she had to plead... Practically bouncing with excitement, the yearling bobbed his head in agreement, answering, 'Of course! Where we gonna go?' Character;; Xanthus Tagged;; fleabittengray w/Tarot Notes;; <3 Timeline;; 2 yrs; mid-winter, late morning.

x TAROT Here in Dark Woods, it was still snowy. She could not wait for it to melt. As she'd trotted over, flecks of snow had been tossed up into the air. Her legs were cold from voyaging through spots that were a little deeper. Heck, her entire body was cold, despite the ample winter coat that she'd grown in for the season. Honestly, it was probably more of a mental thing with her and the cold, rather than an actual physical thing. She hated the cold so much that any time the temperatures dropped, she became simply miserable. Complaining, moaning, and groaning the entire season to the point that it was most likely annoying. Was that going to stop her, though? Absolutely not. She didn't understand how anyone liked this dreadful season! At least she wasn't a nomad during the winter. She simply would not make it without being able to curl up and huddle with the rest of her family and herd mates at night to escape the chill in the air! At least Xanthus greeted her with a smile, instead of a roll of his eyes or something. That must mean he wasn't as annoyed with her complaints as some others were! Excellent. He would be the perfect partner for some shenanigans. He shrugged when she asked what he was up to, but of course, she hadn't given him a proper amount of time to do much else as a response before she was asking him to come on an adventure with her. In fact, her younger sibling seemed eager as ever to do something other than freeze to death in the terrible, awful snow. 'Of course! Where we gonna go?' She grinned all the more at his jubilant reply, bobbing her head with excitement. "Yay!" she exclaimed, bumping her muzzle against her brother's playfully. "I was kinda thinkin' Nomalanga? Have you been to the waterfall there yet? The pool at the bottom of it will totally he warm enough to swim in and I'm absolutely frozen right now. Winter is awful, I hate it." Of course, she had to toss in some complaints about the cold to spice up her offer and make it seem all the more tempting. Because honestly? Two youngins traversing across the Free Lands, to the jungle of all places, really was not the safest of ideas, what with the war going on, as well as the dangers of the jungle itself. Tarot was absolutely not a fighter by any means, and Xanthus was still quite young, but, well, she was just so bored and cold and Nomalanga would be so very warm!
