Outside of Dark Woods, the afternoon had been warm, the sun beaming down from a cloudless sky. The kind of afternoon that held plentiful evidence that spring would soon be on its way. Sorilea supposed that it would be a while yet before the same could be said of Dark Woods. As thick as the forestry was, the sun did not have as much opportunity to warm the earth below, so there were more than a few areas where snow still drifted deep, untouched by the thawing warmth of the sun's rays.
A long sigh escaped the chestnut damsel. How long had it been now, since the twins had vanished without a trace? A year? Longer? It felt like a lifetime. A lifetime of searching. A lifetime of seeing that devastatingly haunted expression in her grandmother's eyes. A lifetime of hurt and wondering if they had vanished... on purpose. Sorilea could not say for absolutely certain, but there had been moments she had experienced with the twins that left her with the distinctly uncomfortable question of whether they had been taken by Lissette's father -- which was Grandmother's belief -- or if they had left of their own volition. She hated to think the twins would abandon them, turn their back on the family that loved them... but she could not shake the fear that it really was possibly the truth.
Obviously, though she had mentioned this to Reth when she and her father had met with the former leader of Dark Woods... it was not something she ever dared bring up to her grandmother. She knew Grandmother was struggling excessively with the whole thing as it was -- and Sorilea greatly feared the heavy toll all this was taking on her health -- and she just could not bring herself to make it any worse. At least Reth knew of her suspicions. And she trusted that information then had been passed on to Lateralus.
Of course, these days obviously no one in Utopia really had time to be looking for a couple of missing mortals. Not with a war on and all. Sorilea tried not to feel bitter about how the war impacted her family, even if it was simply in the sense that fewer individuals were available to help look for the missing members of her family.
Funny how it could be a beautiful, sunny day... while you felt like the weather would better reflect how you felt if it was dark and dreary...
