The Highlands smelled of sulfur and death as the plague took hold of their lands in the aftermath of the custody battle in Lyracor. She had not been present at the time, but had been informed of what happened by and informant that arrived on her door step. Serendipity could still not figure out how she felt about the whole situation. While she was not present she pondered it everything could have been avoided or handled differently.
No matter how she felt about the situation, she had responsibilities to her homeland. It was not longer safe here for them and she was not a god and could not help them. The only thing she could do for now was let them go and find a safe space elsewhere. Everything her mother had built, except for the title, was gone now. To make matter worse, her mother refused to leave and save herself. It was only a matter of time before she would fall victim to the plaques sent by Xerxes. While that was the main situation at hand, the cherry on top was that her plans of creating a safe home for the orphans of the war was put on hold. With everything piled on her shoulders, Serendipity felt helpless and angry.
The young Versai was not necessarily angry at any one equine in particular. Rather angry at the situations that led them to this point. Not just the current drama, but all the drama that lead to this point. There was no way of knowing if any of it all could have been avoided, but they were now living the consequences. Now she was terrified of losing her mother. After everything her mother had suffered through, she was now bound to go through a terrible death on top of everything else.
The former Versai didn't have a desire to live, she felt she deserved it. She had said so in so many stomach wrenching words. It was why Seren was here now. She had to get away from the awful truth. It was time to try to figure out her next steps. She had to stay healthy, but it was hard to stay ready mentally when she was so focused on her mother. There was no one else to take care of the old mare. Going to the afterlife, either side, seemed pointless when they were focused on this war. They would want something, her soul, her vow of alliance, and she had no desire to join either side. Of course her hand could be forced now that this had happened. That thought sat heavy in her gut. While she would to protect the Versai, she could not fight the innocent mortals who had been drug into the war and she could not leave her mother defenseless and alone.
The millions of scenarios ran through her mind as she walked through the Highland territories. She wanted to lash out angry or break down and scream. Instead she bottled it in as she walked trying to cool off and figure out what to do next.
