Early morning breezes tugged gently at the young stallion’s flaxen mane. For a moment, he lifted his head, enjoying the sensation, as well as the quiet atmosphere. The sun had only appeared on the horizon an hour before and the world seemed to be slow in waking, as if stretching languidly before actively getting into the action of the day. It made for a pleasant time to just breathe and enjoy the morning.
With a war raging, Valdus knew that the peaceful calm of this moment was essentially an illusion. Especially for those who were caught up in the deep end of the conflict. Though from what he understood, it was a war between Utopia and the Underworld, it seemed that mortals had been caught up in it as well.
Thus far, he and Tegwen – his aunt – had evaded being caught in the crossfire of it all. Still, he worried that could change. For his aunt. For the mother he barely remembered and whom he and Teg spent their days searching.
The strongest memory he had was of Mother being dragged away by the Helkaer, to suffer who knew what sort of awful fate. And that horrible mare gloating, as if she believed Mother deserved what was happening and worse. In fact, she had all but said as much to him and Teg. She would have taken them who knew where to endure who knew what… but Teg was not about to stand for that and had managed to get them both away. They had been on their own ever since, somehow managing to survive despite how young Valdus had been when Mother had been taken. Fortunately, there had been kindly mares along the way to ensure Valdus had not starved, though Teg had never trusted any of them enough to stick around long. Always they were on the move. Avoiding other equines as much as was possible, aside from what Valdus had required before weaning age.
Life had not really changed much from those childhood days. They still avoided other equines as much as possible. Valdus was not entirely certain he necessarily understood the reason, though Teg once had told him that every contact with strangers always came with a painfully high price. Given that his mother had been taken and somehow it had been connected to a time she and Teg had met strangers… he supposed it made some sense.
If he had known the full truth of all that had befallen his mother before the Helkaer had taken her… he might truly have understood his aunt’s reticence when it came to having absolutely anything to do with others.
As it was, he was accustomed to the shape of his life and content enough with the isolation from all but his aunt. Albeit, he was not as quick to avoid locations if there was so much as a glimpse of a hint that others might be nearby. Which was true on this morning when he approached a nearby pool to take a drink. A quick nibble at the green grasses growing near the banks of the pool might follow, before he would check in with Teg and figure out where they might spend their day today.
