SHATTER
made by remi of rilla go! and adoxography
The night had been rough for poor Shatter. He had been up into the wee hours of the morning, only falling asleep as the sun was already starting to rise. He had slept fitfully and now it was around noon but he was feeling well rested for once. It was nice to doze in a field of flowers he had found. Most lone equines might not decide to sleep out in the open like this in the Free Lands, but Shatter had never been in his right state of mind. Besides the flowers smelled so nice and the sun was so warm against his golden hide. I wish I never had to wake up from this, he thought to himself, sighing softly from where he lay sprawled out in the flowers. Petals and grass tickled his nostrils as he breathed and he ended up sneezing, finally opening his eyes. The brown orbs blinked open slowly and he was pleasantly surprised to find that he did not feel groggy or in any sort of brain fog. In fact, his mind felt... incredibly light and clear. It took him a moment to process what he was experiencing.
Silence.
His mind was quiet, filled only with his own thoughts and not the noise and chaos that it was typically filled with. He slowly began to lift his head from the grass, his heart beating faster in his chest because honestly? Shatter could not remember his head ever being quiet. He could not remember ever feeling this light and awake. He always felt like he was dreaming, his limbs always felt heavy, always felt like he was suffocating as he tried to walk through thick mud or quicksand. He held his breath for a minute, eyes going all the wider when he still did not hear the voice of Dantalion speaking to him. Normally, he heard the voice of the "demon" more often than he heard his own thoughts.
Scrambling to his feet, and finding himself much more coordinated than he ever was, the rocky mountain pony let out a joyous cry. Tears came to his eyes and he smiled up at the sky, taking in a big gulping breath of the fresh, floral scented air. Tears rolled down his cheeks and he could not help but fear that this must be a dream. This couldn't be real. He couldn't be normal and fixed now, could he? For years, he had suffered from a severely demented and psychotic state of mind. His thoughts were hardly ever his own. He was so far trapped in a pit of psychosis that he was unable to decipher reality from fiction.
Shatter looked around himself, feeling more joyous and full of life than he'd ever felt in his life. Do I deserve this? he wondered, and found that his thoughts sounded so crisp and clear inside his now quieted mind. He was able to focus on his thoughts, to make coherent thoughts that made sense for once! Unable to contain his joy, he squealed and kicked up his heels, bolting forward and careening through the field of flowers. He didn't know what he had done to deserve such kindness. Perhaps some deity within the Afterlife had taken pity on him and healed his troubled mind. Whatever it was, whatever had happened, Shatter was beyond grateful. He hoped this feeling lasted. He never wanted to go back to his darkness and shadows again.
