Chime
It'd been a very long time coming, the day that Chime finally strode through Shadow Canyon with energy and on sound hooves. Her joints were stiff and her body still held aches as she stretched out after her night's sleep, but she was feeling leagues better than she had in a year. It'd started when Spring had shown its first approach. The warmer weather had eased a lot of the persistent symptoms she'd suffered from. Bit by bit, the young mare slowly began to regain her energy and some strength. She went on walks that lasted longer than just what she needed to stay on her feet, on warm days she swam and she'd grown a hell of an appetite. The downtime had caused her to lose all of her muscle tone and she'd grown incredibly skinny - her ribs and hips protruding. She'd developed sores from laying on either side with such little fat for so long and those were finally healing and closing up. All in all, she was starting to finally feel like her old self! Sure, she was still plenty skinny and obviously still had a long road to complete recovery, but she was alive, and that seemed like all she could ask for at this point.
The warm sun gleamed off the lake on the morning Chime sought out her mother. When she'd gotten sick, it'd become impossible to lead the herd, so her mother had taken the reins and allotted Chime time to rest and focus on her health. None of them had expected her to be out for so long, but with the last month of nonstop improvements, Chime was starting to build hope again. If this continued, if her health kept improving, she could lead again! Her grandmother tended to her daily and her family was often around, but Chime still felt as though she ought to tell her mother just how much better she was feeling. It'd feel more official put into words... and then, perhaps she could suggest her path back into leadership.

There was, Nikko’s Melody had discovered, no torment quite like helplessly watching your children suffer. All while unable to do much at all to help them. Of course, at least with Chime, there had been ways she could ease her daughter’s suffering in small ways, including once again taking up the reins of Shadow Canyon. The bay tobiano had never imagined she would end up retiring as young as she had. However, neither would she ever have wished to regain rulership in such a fashion. Not like this. Not ever.
While making sure her mother had everything necessary to tend to Chime through her illness, checking in herself on a daily basis, among any other ways she could think to improve Chime’s days… the situation with Orel and Aras was a good deal more complicated.
For one thing, they had not been living in Shadow Canyon when… Orel vanished.
As difficult as that made things, especially in the midst of a war, she had been doing everything in her power to assist in the search for her youngest daughter. And making sure that her son was taking care of himself. She worried constantly for both; who knew what Orel might be suffering, where she might be… As for Aras, it was clear he blamed himself and pushed himself relentlessly. Trying to make sure he rested and ate sufficiently was no easy feat. Especially with him still living in Meraki Woods.
Still, despite the distance, Melody did her best. She had only just returned from a very early morning trek to and from Meraki Woods. Perhaps she could not scold Aras too much for not getting as much sleep as he should, given her own tendency over the last number of months toward sleeplessness while she juggled normal responsibilities as a herd leader, making certain Shadow Canyon was as safe and prepared for whatever the war might throw their way, and doing everything she could for all three of her children.
Nearing the lake, contemplating a quick dip to refresh after her early morning trek, Melody paused, a smile curving her lips at the sight of Chime. Only a week prior, her mother had finally assured that Chime was on the mend. Given all that had been going on, it had been wonderful to at last have some good news. And to see her eldest up and about like this lightened her own steps as she altered her path to connect with the younger mare.
’Good morning, Chime,’ she greeted warmly, once within conversational range. Character;; Nikko's Melody Tagged;; ❅ Icy Dragon ✩ w/Chime Notes;; <3 Timeline;; 8 yrs; early spring, maybe a month or two before Chime retakes lead?

Chime
It wasn't easy to go from someone who was fiercely independent and usually the spark in the room to someone who needed everyone else to take care of her. Chime had to give up on dignity within the first month or so of her illness, something she'd struggled with, but she would remind herself frequently that she was extremely lucky to have her family with her. That was especially true for having her grandmother around, considering she knew the herbal remedies that'd helped the most. If she was on her own or with those who didn't care, Chime imagined she wouldn't have survived at all.
Instead, she was starting to genuinely feel okay again, and that was a miracle all in itself.
Now, rather than her own survival, her thoughts were refocusing on the herd and her siblings. She'd feared for Orel's safety the second she said she wanted to get involved with the royals. There was a particularly bad history for the Neutral Queens and what Chime feared the most had come to pass... or well, pretty close to it. Her sister wasn't dead, that much she was fairly certain of. Orel had pledged her soul to the Underworld and Chime did not think that death would keep her away from at least visiting Shadow Canyon to inform her family what had happened. Yet, there had been no demonic visitors. Something else had happened, but Chime had no leads and she was only just getting well again. Once she could travel without worry, that was one of the first things she'd be doing.
Lost in thought, it took a moment for Chime to register that someone had said her name, let alone greeted her. She stopped and snapped her head up, ears twitching towards the noise as she realized it'd been her own mother. "Good morning!" she greeted, offering her mother a warm smile, despite the thoughts still on her mind. "Look, I'm out for a walk again," she stated, seeming rather proud of the accomplishment, "I've been going out for more and more lately." It probably didn't seem like much, but it was a massive win for Chime, and she was sure her mother would see that too. "Yesterday, I took Midnight out on patrol and we covered nearly the entire border," she continued, pleased to actually be sharing good news, which seemed like what her family needed, "I think I dare say, I'm finally feeling better!"
