Nemesis The loss of Sly had been a serious blow to the Helkaer. Nemesis had found herself transforming from protege to commander in the same breath. Her violence and erratic behavior had increased. Most of her guards were relieved to know that she had an outlet. The war. A place to direct that chaotic wrath that swept through Toxin Raj like a violent storm. She had not wanted to fill the empty seat on the brotherhood so swiftly, but because of the war she had to. Nobody would ever be able to fill the shoes of Sly, not even she. The dark bay had sent out a summons to Harlan and Nacht to join her at the river of Discord in the free lands.
He'd been the only one to turn his face up when they'd opened their doors to welcome a new member. Nacht had not come empty handed, and Nemesis acknowledged the value he offered to them. He seemed the type to get things done rather than offer promises and cheap talk that these bids were so often rife with. It was fine to talk and idealize about what you would like to do, but it was another entirely to prove those idealizations. Sly, Nemesis, Harlan, they were all examples of that. The commander exhaled and slowed her movements from a trot to a slow walk as the rivers came into view.
She had only been to two other rituals before this. Her own, and then Harlan's. Nemesis' belly was still heavily swollen with a foal nestled within. She had been starting to suspect that she was carrying twins with her significant size and the strange movemnts she felt beneath the skin. Nemesis stopped and swayed her hips to allow herself to be in a more comfortable position as she waited for the two members of the Helkaer to arrive. Nacht would be the first stallion to join the brotherhood since Undead Legion. He had been the General before Nemesis had been. Her violet eyes turned to scan the terrain back the way she came. Back toward the Outlands.
If there was one thing that she was not, it was patient. Nemesis wanted and expected a swift response from the two Helkaer. Harlan had proven herself to already be prompt in her attendance. Nacht was still new and had yet to prove himself and build the reputation he needed to spread the fear and hatred amongst the masses. Once the two arrived, Nemesis took after Sly when Harlan had been initiated all those months ago. "Nacht, enter the pool." The commander instructed with even tones.

Things had been... strained to say the least. Though Harlan had settled into the Helkaer and truly felt that she had found where she was meant to be, she had not expected to be rising through the ranks. Sly and Nemesis had far more experience and an indomitable reputation in these lands, and she knew it would take time before her role would grow. With the death of Sly, she was propelled into General and had to reevaluate her contribution towards the war efforts and the Brotherhood itself. Though she hadn't had time to meet with Nemesis to determine what the new expectations were and their plan for revenge, she was not surprised at how quickly the Commander had sought out another member. The Helkaer needed to stay strong and unified. From what she had heard about Nacht's approach and demeanor, he was going to be a good fit. They needed someone strong, direct, and bold to join them, and it seemed that Nemesis had accepted the stallion's offer. Though he was the only one who dared to answer the call, the Commander could have easily said no. Harlan might not have been able to speak to him before the ceremony, but she trusted Nemesis to make the right choice. Now it was time to officially welcome him to the ranks and see if his actions would fit his intents. She looked forward to seeing what he would do. Nemesis had sent out the summons quickly after making her choice, and the wraith wasted no time traveling to the river. She had only been to her ritual and was curious to see things from a different perspective. Would Nacht handle it as she had? Would it affect him differently? The phantom followed the somewhat familiar path down the sloping landscape until the bay mare came into view by the pool. She knew that the Commander was pregnant and noted that she was starting to show signs that she would bare twins just as the dappled fem had. There would be new blood again in the Outlands and wouldn't be surprised if Nemesis had opted for more cambions. After all, she did like to collect them. Harlan made a mental note that she should be doing the same. She said nothing as she approached, dipping her head in acknowledgment and respect. There would be time for words later. As the stallion reached the pair, Harlan took him in with her scrutinizing gaze as Nemesis spoke. The word of Sly's murder had come to the surprise of many, begging the question of who would be taking her place. If he was being honest, Nemesis' swift call to action had impressed him, and so the stallion went to Toxin Raj feeling that he was truly ready to step up and take a seat at their table, should they allow him. The stallion had returned to Kular Valley with a knowing feeling of pride. He had prepared for that moment over half his life, confident in the way he'd presented himself, and hopeful given the Commander’s demeanor as she carefully picked him apart. Others had made the comment on the fact that he was the only applicant; the thought had crossed his mind, surely, but at the end of the day Nacht knew that she would not choose just anybody. Sly was irreplaceable, and the particular way of the Helkaer meant that they needed someone likewise. The stallion wasn’t stupid. He knew that he would never compare, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t make his own way.
When the summoning came, he had been pacing the valley, knowing what this meant for the fate of his future. Nacht changed the course in which he moved without further acknowledgement of the one who delivered Nemesis' word. The Elysian Rivers was not too far from where he'd been staying, and his moved with a sense of urgency. Punctuality had been instilled in him during his time away from Wild Equines, and it was never polite to keep your higher ups waiting, was it? In his travels, he wondered what it might feel like to be blessed with the gift of fire as granted by the river Discord. He was curious to know if there would be pain. Everything great came at a price. Already selling his soul to a cause, Nacht knew it didn't matter. He would take what it gave him with grace the same way that both Nemesis or Harlan had, same as Sly before him. The stallion was eager for many things in that moment.
The rivers were a sight to behold. As they came into view, Nacht sucked in a deep breath to soothe the nerves that were prickling in his throat. He spotted Nemesis as Harlan was approaching, tucking herself quietly to the side. He noted just how heavily in foal the bay mare was and how Harlan's eyes seemed to so viciously take him in. In between the Commander and the second did Nacht stand when he had finally reached them, nodding in each of their direction as a silent greeting, awaiting the orders. Not a second later did he hear it; "Nacht, enter the pool," Nemesis said without missing a beat. He obliged, and his bright eyes fell onto the painted mare as he passed, inky tendrils falling into his face as the rivers winds whipped them about. His steps were calculated, stride controlled as he reached the waters edge. There was no hesitation as he crossed the threshold, body enveloped in the lukewarm waters. Nacht made a wide turn to face the Commander and second, head held high with a small dip to say I am here, I am ready.

Nemesis
TW: mention of murder
Both Harlan and Nacht arrived at the River of Discord swiftly. That was something she could appreciate, even more so now that she felt things since beooming pregnant. The brute was quiet as he entered the pool, but did so with obedience. Harlan had dipped her crown to the commander and she responded in kind. Once the ritual was over, they could get out of here and further discuss their plans for the rest of the War. Nemesis hadn't kept up with Harlan as much as she should have since the Raid, but she had also been busy with the murder of her mother. The dark bay cast a glance to Harlan and gave a silent nod to indicate that the ritual was about to begin. A strange sensation buzzed through her body as she stepped to the edge of the river and peered down at Nacht who was only slightly lower than her now that he was partially submerged by the river of Discord.
Her lips buzzed and she began to utter the chants she'd heard during her own initiation into the brotherhood. It was automatic, and unexplainable. It had been much the same experience when she and Sly had conducted Harlan's ritual. This would be her first initiation on the other side of things. There was nothing obvious that changed right away, at least not perceptible to anyone who may have walked by. Nemesis was locked in this trance until the event was complete, and Nacht became a full fledged member of the Helkaer. A member who would have their own reputation to build as they exposed Wild Equines to the chaos he would sow. After some time, the buzzing sensation slowly faded, and her lips fell silent. Nemesis turned her head to look at Harlan once more to await when her own chanting would cease.
When all was eventually quiet, Nemesis peered at Nacht with her violet gaze. "You can now return to the banks of the river, Nacht. Join us as a full brother of the Helkaer." The commander instructed him and moved back a few feet to allow him to climb out. "There is much we have to discuss." Nemesis ended what she'd wanted to say here. She gave time and space for both Nacht and Harlan to speak up if they wished. After this she would likely invite them back to the Helkaer territory to discuss things further.

If there was one thing Harlan appreciated above all else, it was respect. When the stallion finally joined the pair along the edge of the river, she returned his nod with a dip of her head. She would get to know the Private later, but there were more important and pressing matters at hand. The beast waited no time following Nemesis's order to enter the pool, casting a glance back to the dappled mare as he did so. The wraith exchanged a knowing glance with the Commander, stepping up beside her at the edge of the water with burning curiosity. The General didn't know what to expect this time around. She never learned or asked about the strange words that had been spoken to her at her own ritual. Did she somehow miss a summons from Nemesis to learn? Before she could ponder on that thought, the phantom's mouth began to move on its own. At first, Harlan hated that she had no control. But there was something mysterious, profound, and powerful in that moment. It reminded her of a similar feeling when she herself was in that river. It was wholly different seeing it from another view. The mares' words intertwined through each other, their timbres echoing around the small group over the sound of the rushing water. The wraith couldn't move, blind, or even complete a thought during the strange chanting. Her gaze was locked onto the dark stallion below them even as everything was completed. It was a strange feeling, though she couldn't help wishing she wouldn't have to do this again any time soon. As the words faded, she felt Nemesis's eyes on her and turned to meet her gaze when Harlan was in control of herself again. New blood, new Private, would this be a new Brotherhood? Only time would tell. You can now return to the banks of the river, Nacht. Join us as a full brother of the Helkaer. There is much we have to discuss. The wraith moved back as well, nodding in agreement. Welcome to the Brotherhood, Nacht. She kept her words simple, yet she was itching to see where the Brotherhood would go from here and how things would change. She didn't know what exactly transpired upon his meeting with Nemesis, but had faith that he would live up to both mares' expectations. He had to - he had no choice. The river was set ablaze with life as the chanting began. His gray gaze was ripped from between the two mares to meet Nemesis’ violet eyes. In that moment, there was nothing Nacht could do nothing but listen to the river; his breathing matched the pace of the waves as they crashed against him. He would have allowed it to swallow him whole if it asked. A heated sensation, something akin to electricity, moved through him as Discord’s claim rooted in the depths of his flesh. Harlan’s voice could be heard, too, and Nacht wanted so badly to look unto her, but he could not. Any soreness from his travels were liberated as he stood there in the trance, mind racing a mile a minute. The feeling was intoxicating. Nacht had not had many doubts in his decision to apply for the third seat, and any that were there washed away as the harmonic chanting continued. He barely noticed the scathing heat that had hit his shoulder where the Helkaer’s mark had adorned itself. Then, in the blink of an eye, Nemesis’ voice faded, and Harlan’s followed some few seconds after. Just as quickly as it had begun did the river quiet. As if nothing had happened, there stillness in the waters and air accompanied by a rhythmic thrumming deep in his chest. Had Nacht’s mind not still been trained on Nemesis, the sound would’ve drowned out her voice, but he managed to catch her as she beckoned him to the shoreline. “You can now return to the banks of the river, Nacht. Join us now as a full brother of the Helkaer. There is much we have to discuss,” the Commander said, allowing him space to join them. Stepping up out of the river, he didn’t shake Discord’s water from his coat, letting the power of the ritual remain and wearing it with pride. The baroque stallion took his rightful spot within their circle as Harlan diverted her attention to him. “Welcome to the Brotherhood, Nacht,” she’d said. “It is good to be here,” the new Private said, gray eyes shifting to look upon Nemesis. He could not explain the newfound urges that were swelling within him — like he’d been reborn under the river’s will. Left with questions, Nacht decided now wasn’t the time. The Commander was right, there was much to be discussed. A brewing darkness had hit his bright eyes as he looked between his counterparts, deep in thought. He hoped they’d understand his silence. After the long pause, his lips curled. Not a smirk, but also not a snarl. His tone was low, saying, “I would like to better understand those involved in Sly’s murder.” He’d lived in Wild Equines most of his life, but with his absence came change. He recognized names to their respective faces, though not nearly enough to know better. “The war will take a great deal of our resources in the coming months, as it already has, I’m sure. If I am correct, things will come to a head far sooner than we think. I feel it best our enemies be dealt with before that happens.” Nacht’s eyes shifted to the painted vixen to acknowledge her as he did Nemesis, and he lingered there a few moments longer than he wanted to. This time when he spoke, he addressed Nemesis directly. “Where do the Helkaer stand in this war, Commander?”• illɘgal ◦ with harlan & ➳ T e c h n o ➳ with nemesis !570 words

Nemesis
TW: mention of murder
Nacht emerged from the banks, and joined she and Harlan beside the river. Water dripped from his pelt, and his brand had emerged to indicate that he belonged to their group. Harlan welcomed him officially and he responded in kind. Nacht was interested to get started right away, which was something Nemesis preferred. That was something she had always enjoyed about Sly, and Harlan. Sometimes they acted without asking, but it mattered not. Chaos was their end goal, and spreading suffering throughout Wild Equines. He asked about Sly's murder, and her blood turned hot at the thought of it. "Her killers will be forced out of hiding. Assuming she makes an apperance in the Afterlife, she will name them and we will hunt them down like the pathetic dog they are." Nemesis answered, her words were laced with vitriol. Their new brother then went on to explain some of his throughts regarding the war, and he wanted to know where they stood with this all. The dark bay mare remained quiet for a few moments as she contemplated how exactly to answer him.
It was still foreign to her to be in the seat of Commander. For so long she had been Sly' protege. Nemesis was more than capable, but she still fell into habit. She had created a repuation in her own right, but it was strange not to give Sly precedence anymore."Barring details to keep any prying ears at bay... we stand firmly aligned with the Underworld at the moment. Both Utopia and the Light Kingdom are currently declared enemies, and they know it. These enemies extend beyond the war, and it is expcted of you both to make them suffer as much as you are able to. Make them regret crossing us..." She answered with complete hostility in her voice. The ferocity might have startled anyone else, but she knew it wouldn't startle either Harlan or Nacht. If it did, they certainly wouldn't have belonged in the Helkaer.
Weakness was unbecoming and would not be tolerated. Her gaze transfered from their new brother to Harlan. "We should return to the Outlands to discuss anything further. Shall we go to Sinheim, or accompany our brother to his new home?" Nemesis asked Harlan. It didn't matter to her where they ended up, so long as they were no longer exposed in the freelands where anyone might be able to overhear them.
